the 8:30 a.m. race on time,
led the majority of the way

ner (8:54) caught up toward
the end. Varner, who shaved
1:37 off of his time from last
year, briefly saw Lundy as
she made her final turn.
“She’s a great runner,”
said Varner, who handily ac-
complished his goal of run-
ning a sub-50-minute race.
“She ran really well. It’s hard
to catch her on a day like
that. She was faster again.”

but he can bomb down those
things,” she said. “I thought
he might run me down, so
I wanted to keep running
hard, but I wasn’t going to
take any chances of injuries.
“I was a little bit sus-
picious toward the end. I
know that, unless he got
hurt, he would be coming
up at any minute near the
end. So I tried to run it in
hard, which is fun, anyway.”
Fitzpatrick, a two-time
winner (2013, 2014) and 16-
time black-shirt (top 35) re-
cipient, noted that conditions
were faster on the course this
year, adding that Lundy and
Varner “passed me much ear-
lier, and they flew by me.”
“Now, because it’s been so
many years, I’m starting to
appreciate the thought of all
these consecutive years,” said
Fitzpatrick, who has run 18
