We are group 8, we are representing steel industry.

Before we move on to respective companies, we would like to talk about the steel industry a bit so that
we can understand the competitiveness required by the companies in this industry and how it is evident
from the vision and mission statement of these companies

Steel Industry though growing at very good pace in Industry has been matured globally. It has limited big
players who are fighting for the fixed pie there is, competitiveness comes down to striving for higher
efficiency and modernization. Brand image and value is also linked to its success.

It has no Mission statement as of now, earlier it used to be supporting India’s growth in steel domain
with speed & innovation, and it has been true to its mission, India’s third largest steelmaker JSW has
seen tremendous growth since its inception and supported India’s growing need of steel which is also
third highest consumer of steel in world.

As per talking about speed & innovation from the mission statement – JSW is one of few plants in world
to operate Novel corex technology along with conventional blast surface to make iron pellets and as far
speed is concerned they are among the fastest growing conglomerate in India and from one steel plant
in 1982 they have expanded to seven indian facilities and one in USA are looking at another facility in
Vijaynagar, Karnataka by 2020.

As per our analysis of mission statement, though it lacked objectivity in terms of figures which can be
seen in terms of competitors but JSW certainly lived up to the mission statement.

Now coming onto the vision statement, it states To create sustainable growth while balancing utilization
of natural resources and social development in its business decisions.

Upon successful dissection, keywords here are sustainable growth & care for natural resources and
society.

These keywords are almost common in their each counterpart in Indian companies. Conclusion that, this
is something that really drives JSW or it is just sticking up to Industry standard is hard to draw. But let’s
not be mistaken, from planting two million trees to installing Zero liquid discharge technology to save
water. It has certainly tried to live up to its vision. Its code of conduct and policies are related to work
conditions, human right and environment and safety and their audits are also stressed on EHS, labor
rights and societal impact. It has certainly done for nature and society on papers so as to live up to its
vision, but there is nothing new under the sun they have done in comparison with their competitors and
their growth story has been driven more by operational efficiency leveraging cutting edge technology
and their proximity to iron ore fields.
