Firstly ask about the average amount of water a person uses in a day from there that should help us

determine the size of the tank. Also ask from the height the tank is raised and the distance the water has
to flow to the community should bring about some standard way of finding the size the pipes to be
used. (assuming the water supply is 24 hours service) Find the rating of a pump capable of pumping
water from the borehole to the tank and hence find the size of the pipes feeding the tank. If possible, he
should show you how exactly the engineering drawings are suppose to look like.
THE AMOUNT OF TER REQUIRED

The amount of water used by an individual is roughly about 300 to 375 liters per individual in each
household. Projecting these results across four (4) people in ten (10) houses, we get that the amount of
water used in tens (10) households is approximately 12,000L to 15,000L the calculation are shown below

1_individual = 300L

4_individuals =?

We cross multiply and get 12,000L, we repeat the process this time replacing 300L by 375L

1_individual = 375L

4_individuals=?

We cross multiply again and get 1500L. Because they are 10 households, we multiply the two
result by 10 and get the range 12,000L to 15,000L.

The amount of water required by a community composed of 10 households can be determined by taking
an average of of the range calculated previously as shown below

Amount of water= (12,000L + 15,000L)/2=13,500L.

SIZE OF THE TANK

The following are required in the calculation for the size of the water tank. The water capacity of the
tank and the diameter of the tank.

Assuming that the diameter of the tank is 2 meters:

V= (pi*r^2*h)

13500L=13.5m^3

13.5=pi*(1)^2*h

h=13.5/pi ; h=4m

Therefore the size of tank =4m high with a diameter of 2m.
