Aunque son hábiles para ocultarse del ojo humano, estos insectos
no escaparon del lente de Murray Cooper. Despite having a
unique ability to hide from the human eye, these insects never
escape the lens of Murray Cooper.

E cuador es reconocido por su diversidad, en especial cuando se
trata de insectos. Por ejemplo, en el Parque Nacional Yasuní, hay más
de 100 000 especies por hectárea; el nivel más alto de diversidad
de insectos en el mundo, y aproximadamente la misma cantidad de
especies que se pueden encontrar en todo el territorio de EE.UU. El
fotógrafo Murray Cooper, no solo se sintió atraído por estos números,
sino por las “locas formas” que podía captar en su lente. Es por eso
que decidió emprender su búsqueda que no le resultó fácil en un inicio
-ya que algunas especies logran hábilmente camuflarse y engañar a la
vista- pero encontró insectos que, según afirma, le robaron el aliento.
Le invitamos a recorrer disfraces, formas y comportamientos que esconden estos
pequeños animales y conozca más de ellos gracias al aporte de Álvaro Barragán,
de la Escuela de Ciencias Biológicas de la Pontificia Universidad Católica
del Ecuador.
Ecuador is known for its diversity, especially regarding insects. For
example, in Yasuní National Park there are more than 100,000 species
per hectare, which is the highest level of diversity of insects in the world.
Interestingly enough, this is approximately the same amount of species
of insects found in the entire United States. Photographer, Murray Cooper,
didn’t just fell drawn toward these numbers, but also to the “crazy
forms” that he can capture with his lens. Thus, he decided to embark on
a journey, which initially wasn’t easy, because some species are so adapt
at camouflaging themselves that they trick the eye; however, he found the
insects that, according to him, can take your breath away.
We invite you to take a tour of costumes, forms and behaviors that help
to hide these small animals, and learn about these insects, thanks to
help from Álvaro Barragán, of the School of Biological Sciences of the
Catholic University of Ecuador.

Familia de polillas neotropicales. Cuando son larvas,
muchas tienen pelos urticantes. Se alimentan de hojas
de árboles nativos. Los adultos son muy peludos. Se
sabe muy poco de su biología. / Polillas neotropicales
Family. While larva, many have poisonous hairs. They
feed off the leaves of native trees. Adults are almost
hairless, and very little is known about their biology.

Temperate andean forest, Quito
Pertenecen a la familia Coccinellidae,
son insectos carnívoros que se alimentan
de insectos fitófagos como los pulgones
(Aphididae), son voraces y pueden
alimentarse de una gran cantidad de
insectos. / Belonging to the Coccinellidae
family, these are carnivorous insects that
feed off phytophage insects, such as aphids
(Aphididae). They are ravenous and can feed
on a large amount of insects at any one time.

Leafhopper Bocydium
Amazonía ecuatoriana /
Ecuadorian Amazon
Esta es la silueta de algunos Leafhopper,
pertenecen a la familia de los membrácidos.
Se los puede encontrar en el bosque tropical
de tierras bajas en la Amazomía. / This is
the silhouette of a Leaf hopper, which is part
of the Membracidae family (treehoppers).
These insects can be found in tropical forests
throughout the lower Amazon region.

Mantidae
Amazonía ecuatoriana / Ecuadorian Amazon
Las mantis son carnívoros voraces que acechan a sus presas
camuflándose como hojas o ramas de árboles. Muchas hembras
luego de copular se comen al macho para asegurar proteínas para
sus huevos. / Mantis are ravenous carnivorous species that trap
their prey by camouflaging themselves as leaves or branches.
Many females, after copulating, eat the male to ensure they have
enough protein for their eggs.

Opilionidae
Amazonía ecuatoriana / Ecuadorian Amazon
Son arácnidos parientes de las arañas. Son carnívoros y algunos
son necrófagos (se alimentan de animales muertos). En algunos
casos se presentan cuidados parentales de sus huevos y crías. /
These arachnids are relatives of spiders. They are carnivorous
and some are necrophages, which feed on dead animals. In some
cases, adult species take care of the eggs and young insects.

Lymantriidae
Amazonía ecuatoriana / Ecuadorian Amazon
Larva de una familia de polillas. A pesar de estar cubierta de pelos,
estos no son urticantes (no causan irritación) pero funcionan para
disuadir a algunos predadores que no lo saben. / Larva of a moth
family. Despite being covered in hair, they are not poisonous; however,
the hair does dissuade unsuspecting predators from attacking them.

Muchos tienen estructuras llamativas sobre sus alas que les sirven
en algunos casos como defensa y en otros sirven como ornamentos
sexuales. Tienen cuidado parental es decir las crias son cuidadas por
la madre el padre o ambos. / Many of these insects have elaborate
designs on their wings, which in some cases serve as a form of
defense, and in others as a form of attracting the opposite sex. Both
the male and female species of these insects take care of their young.
Reconocido fotógrafo sudafricano residente en Ecuador. Recorre el país
fotografiando la vida silvestre. Ha publicado sus trabajos en importantes

the country photographing wildlife. He has published his works in magazines,
such as National Geographic, in addition to being the co-author of books
on Hummingbirds of Ecuador and Birds of Colombia, and is the co-owner of

photographic works.
