Message to Parents
MEMBERSHIP CARD POLICY
Wakeman has a membership tracking system that requires all members to bring their membership cards every time
they enter the club. Members swipe their cards through a scanner when they come into the building and when they
leave the building. This system will allow staff to track attendance and to alert the staff as to who is in the Club. This
eliminates non-members from using the Club with the emphasis on security in our daily lives. It is very important for
parents to stress to their child the importance of presenting their card when entering the Club.

PARKING LOT
The safety of all our members, both inside and outside the club is of vital importance. As our membership increases
and our programs continue to grow, safety in the parking lot is an ongoing issue. We ask that you follow the one-way
signs once you pull into the parking lot. If you are parking we ask that you are cautious when pulling in and especially
when pulling out, and PLEASE refrain from using cell phones while driving on Club property. Also, state law prohibits
any use of the handicap spot without a valid handicap marker. This includes dropping your child off. Many times there
are programs ending when others begin and at times the parking lot does become congested. We ask all our drivers
to be aware for the safety of our members.

WEB SITE — WWW.WAKEMANCLUB.ORG

Wakeman makes great use of our website. Please check the website for open gym times, league schedules, an-
nouncements, program descriptions, registration dates and cancellations. There is also an opportunity for feedback
from our members through email.

SENIOR STAFF
Dedicated adults are needed to work part-time during week nights and weekends. Senior Staff are responsible for
supervising club members and programs, as well as assisting full-time staff with program set up, clean up and admin-
istrative tasks. If you are interested, please contact Geoff at 259-4805 or Geoff@wakemanclub.org.

Wakeman Commitment
A message from Clare Mahoney, Maria Cimina, Geoff Baranger, and John Novak
Countless hours are put into the program planning process: organizing activities, scheduling gyms and field times,
recruiting referees, volunteer coaches and instructors. Before registering for any program, please be certain that your
child is prepared to attend classes, practices, games or clinics unless, of course, he or she is injured, ill or
academically ineligible. The Wakeman staff has made a commitment to provide each youngster with the best
possible Club experience. We ask that our members make the same commitment in return.

6
Wakeman Values
The following is a list of qualities that are important to leading a happy, fulfilling life.
We want our members to be good people. We want our members to be:

Honest
The most important value and you all know what it means.
But are you strong enough to live without lying?
The Wakeman Staff thinks you are.

Sensitive to the Feelings of Others

Wakeman is a place where everyone should feel comfortable and included.
If someone is not playing, ask them to join your game.
No one is good at everything.
Do not make anyone feel bad about themselves.
Wakeman wants its members to be strong and confident.

Willing to Help
Wakeman is proud of our members and their willingness to volunteer and donate to those less
fortunate. Let’s not lose that attitude with each other. If another Wakeman member needs help
consider it your duty to see to their needs.

Sportsmen and Sportswomen

When the other team wins by two or twenty do not pout or act mad. Celebrate the fact that you are
part of the game and run over to congratulate the winners. The same goes for you when you win a game.
Remember what it feels like to lose. Your opponents are feeling that way right now.

Trustworthy
If you say you are going to do something, make sure it gets done.
And if you are asked not to do something, don’t do it.

Patient
Relax and give things time. The staff at Wakeman is here to serve you.
If they are asking you to wait you can be sure it is for a good reason.

Willing to Try New Things

The only way you are going to learn is to try.

Respect
Of Yourself, Of Your Family, Of Your Club.

7
Program Registration
Many of Wakeman’s programs have been known to fill up right away as space is limited. ALL registrations are taken
on a first come, first serve basis.

THE THREE WAYS TO REGISTER FOR MOST WAKEMAN PROGRAMS ARE:

1. ONLINE: See page 2 for additional information or consult our website.
2. IN PERSON: You can come down to the club on the day of registration (indicated on the inside front cover of
this book) at 10:00am (the Club opens at 9:00am). At this time you will sign your member up, pay for the
program and receive the necessary information.
3. BY PHONE: Your child must be a current member before you may register by phone!
You can call the Club on the day of registration (indicated on the inside front cover of this book) starting at
10:00am and place your child’s name on the program reservation list. You then have 48 hours to come in and
pay for the program and receive the program guidelines.

OTHER IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW:

To register for Wakeman programs you must be a member of the Club for the 2018/2019 program year. All 2017/2018
memberships expired on August 31, 2018 and everyone must fill out a new application and pay the appropriate fee.
If you attended camp in the summer of 2018, you must renew membership for the 2018/2019 year.
n Registrations will be taken until the program is full and then a wait list will begin. No payment is required of the
members on the wait list until they are accepted into the program.
n Your child must have a current membership before you may register by phone!

PROGRAM REFUND POLICY/CANCELLATIONS
We understand that there are instances where participants would be entitled to a refund of fees paid. No matter how
diligently one plans their family’s and children’s activities, situations may arise that require a change. However, as an
organization, we must set guidelines that allow us to plan for our seasonal needs such as ordering equipment,
supplies and assignment of officials. All of these activities have a cost associated with them. For these reasons we
have developed the following refund policy.

Full Refund
A full refund (less a $10 administrative charge) will be given if a participant attends no practices, class, games or
try-out sessions and as long as jerseys, t shirts or gear have not been ordered for your child. The Club must receive
notice of intent to withdraw ten (10) days before the first scheduled session. Please allow 30 days for processing
refund checks. *Membership is non-refundable and not transferable.

Partial or Pro-rated Club Credit

Between 0-3 sessions, practices, or classes attended, we allow a partial Club credit (less a $10 administrative charge).
The pro-rated Club credit will be based on participation, individual circumstances and whether or not jerseys, t shirts
or gear have been ordered for your child and is at the discretion of the staff. Club credits are good for one year from
date of issuance. *Membership is non-refundable and not transferable.

No Refund
If three practices, sessions, classes or one regular season game has elapsed, then no refund will be given. If a partici-
pant is dismissed at any time for disciplinary reasons then no refund will be given.

Summer Camp Refund Policy

A full refund (less the $50 deposit) will be issued if Wakeman receives in writing your intent to withdraw before the
final camp balances are due (May 28, 2019). No refunds or credits will be issued after this date unless it is an illness
or injury in which case a doctor’s note must be provided. The Club Unit Director must receive notice of intent to with-
draw by email. Please allow 30 days for processing refund checks. *Membership is non-refundable and not trans-
ferable.

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club’s after-school program, serving 6 through 12 year olds, is exempt from the State
of Connecticut childcare licensure as per the Office of Early Childhood. All Wakeman programs adhere to the
membership and safety standards set forth by Boys & Girls Club of America.

9
Bus Transportation to Clubhouse
Ongoing Online Registration
Wakeman has begun Transportation to Wakeman’s Southport Clubhouse for “Open Gym”. Bus transportation is for
members in 3rd-8th grade only. “Open Gym” consists of two gyms, a gameroom, computer lab, turf field, outdoor
sport court and lounge space. There is also a homework room where children can participate in the Power Hour
homework program and receive help from Keystone volunteers. Open Gym is supervised, but not structured;
allowing members freedom to do what interests them. The Clubhouse is open daily from 3:00pm–9:30pm.

A once-a-year $25 clerical fee is charged per day of week you register your child to ride the bus from school to
Wakeman's Southport Clubhouse. This fee is necessary to help Wakeman offset the substantial clerical costs incurred
by Club directors and administrative staff in registering, coordinating and monitoring members participants who
utilize bus transportation from schools. The once-a-year clerical fee is $25 for a child who signs up for bus to Club
one day a week, $50 for child to ride bus to Club two days weekly, $75 for three days weekly, $100 for four days
weekly, $125 for five days weekly.

To register for a bus from your child’s school, please use the following online registration directions:
n Visit our website at www.wakemanclub.org
n Click on the red “online registration” button in the upper right
n Log into your existing account to register for the bus. If you are a new member, you will have to create an account
n You will get an email receipt from our registration database once payment is complete. You will then get an email
from Program Director Geoff Baranger confirming that your child is all set to begin taking the bus within seven
(7) days of completing registration process.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact Program Director Geoff Baranger at geoff@wakemanclub.org or
(203) 259-4805.

We offer transportation from the following Fairfield Schools: Burr, Jennings, Stratfield, North Stratfield,
Osborne Hill and Fairfield Woods M.S., Mill Hill, Sherman, Riverfield, Dwight, St. Thomas, Tomlinson M.S.,
Ludlowe M.S. and Eagle Hill.

Connecticut Childcare Disclosure:

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club’s after-school program, serving 6 through 12 year olds, is exempt from the State
of Connecticut childcare licensure as per the Office of Early Childhood. All Wakeman programs adhere to the
membership and safety standards set forth by Boys & Girls Club of America.

Bus Transportation to Clubhouse
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my child take the bus home any day of the week they want?
Children are only allowed to take the bus on the day of the week that they have been pre-registered through Wakeman.
If your child is not scheduled to take the bus to Wakeman, but a family emergency makes it necessary for them to take
the bus to Wakeman, call the club and speak with Geoff Baranger before 12:00pm at (203-259-4805). Transportation
will only be provided if our directors can properly communicate to the school and there is space is available on the bus.

What do I do if my child is sick and will not attend school?

When you notify school by phone to tell them that your child is sick, let them also know that your child will not take
the bus to Wakeman that day.

What do I do if my child is sick and will not attend school?

When you notify school by phone to tell them that your child is sick, let them also know that your child will not take
the bus to Wakeman that day.

What should I do if I cannot pick up my child until later than expected?

Although the Clubhouse is open until 9:30pm every day, one or both gyms often close daily from 5:15pm-8:00pm for
programs and the Computer Lab closes at 6:00pm daily. Children who often spend a long period of time at the club
may run out of creative ways to stay busy. Parents should have two alternative people who can pick up their child in
an emergency in case parents are running late. This is also important in case your child gets sick or hurt at the club-
house and needs to be picked up early. Keep the phone numbers of alternative rides in your cell phone and at work.

Can my child leave Wakeman without a parent?

Yes, Wakeman is a drop-in Clubhouse, meaning children can come and go as they please. Many children walk, ride
bikes, or get dropped off at the Club and some may also walk to local convenient stores. Parents should discuss their
own expectations with children to be sure they reach an understanding of family rules.

What do I do if my child is in school, but will not take bus to Wakeman?

If your child leaves school early due to illness or other reason, let the main office know that your child usually
attends Wakeman but will not attend that day.

If your child is in school at regular dismissal time but will not take bus to Wakeman, you must send a note with
your child in the morning to the school’s main office).

What happens on a half day of school?

This year, there will be bus transportation available to Wakeman on scheduled half days of school (such as
conference days or the day before Thanksgiving). There will NOT be bus transportation to Wakeman on unsched-
uled half days (such as weather related early dismissals).

Is the Club open on snow days, days off from school and vacation weeks?
On snow days, Wakeman attempts to open the Clubhouse at 3:00pm. During severe weather, the Club may stay
closed for entire day. On scheduled days off from school and vacation weeks, Wakeman is usually open 11:00am-
9:00pm. As a member, there is no additional fee for your child to drop in on these day.

How do I contact Wakeman?

The Southport Clubhouse phone number is (203) 259-4805. Children can be reached at the Club, but the Club is a
very busy place with many children and programs taking place, so phones calls should be limited to emergencies.
Children may use the front desk phone to call their parents as needed.

11
Membership
Any boy or girl between 3rd and 12th grade, regardless of age, may join Wakeman Boys & Girls Club. Memberships

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club is committed to providing high quality staff, facilities and programs for its members.
Wakeman receives income from a variety of sources including grants, special event fundraisers, annual charitable
appeal and program fees, but without these multiple sources of income, Wakeman's membership fee alone would
cost over $500 per child per year.

Wakeman offers two modern facilities at the Southport Clubhouse and the Smilow Burroughs Clubhouse in Bridgeport.
In Southport, members have access to two basketball courts, a homework room, an arts studio, a game room, a
weight training center and a technology room. Just outside the front door, there is a turf field where programs such
as lacrosse, field hockey, flag football and rugby take place. An adjacent SportCourt surface features two outdoor
basketball/tennis courts. The Smilow Burroughs Clubhouse offers a basketball court, a homework room, an arts
studio, a game room, a dance studio and a technology room. Outside there is a grass play space along with access
to the Cal Ripken multi-purpose field, which is located one-quarter of mile away.

Wakeman's facilities are open daily throughout the school year and on weekends and school holidays. The member-
ship fee entitles all members to use either Club's facilities on a daily basis. Bus transportation is provided from 14
Fairfield Schools to the Southport Clubhouse and 2 schools to the Smilow Burroughs Clubhouse daily. Membership
also provides access to over 100 fee-based programs, leagues and classes including basketball, lacrosse, other sports
programs, arts programs, Keystone Club, Torch Club, After School program at Smilow Burroughs and numerous other
top-quality programs. Wakeman also offers a variety of day camps in the summer.

depending on seasonal programs and vacation periods. (Note: Memberships obtained after April 1 will be
prorated to $65. All memberships expire on August 31.)

Holland Hill Mentoring Program – 105 Meadowcroft Road, Fairfield, CT 06825
Since 2005, the Outreach at McKinley has provided after-school enrichment and mentoring programs for McKinley’s
diverse student population and volunteer opportunities for high school students. The Outreach focuses on improve-
ment of students’ social skills, healthy lifestyles and academics. It also helps open the door to participation in Wakeman
after-school programs, leagues and summer camps. Based on the

Enrichment programs are offered at McKinley Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in ten week sessions throughout
the school year. Recent programs include DIY STEM, WonderSTEM, CS First Coding, Creative Kids Art, Soccer Fitness
Fanatics, Board Games Club, Indoor Tennis and more.

The Holland Hill Mentoring Program was created in fall 2018 through a grant from Kiwanis Club of Fairfield and in
partnership with Fairfield Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones.

The 3rd-5th grade Great Futures Mentoring Program and 2nd Grade Smart Moves Mentoring Program serve 80
McKinley students with 125 high school volunteers during the school year. The program currently serves 21 Holland Hill
students and 25 teens.

Bus is available from McKinley and Holland Hill to Wakeman’s Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse daily after school. Many
students also participate in leagues and vacation activities at both clubhouses.

Through after-school mentoring, McKinley and Holland Hill students gain consistent role models and strengthened
academic skills, and greater opportunities to socialize with peers. Teen volunteers develop their patience, compassion
and knowledge while exploring careers working with youth, fulfilling school community service requirements and giving
back to the community. Since 2014, thirty-five former McKinley mentees have returned as volunteer teen mentors.

Teen Volunteer Mentor Programs
Volunteer one hour a week or more – and you’ll make a difference in a child’s life. Very likely, they’ll also make a
difference in your own life! More than 130 teens and 10 adult chaperones chose to make a difference last year and
overwhelmingly felt the experience impacted their own life as well.

Teens frequently use their hours toward college applications, Fairfield Prep Christian Service, National Honor Society,
High School Key Club and other programs. Volunteer hours are tracked by Wakeman. Programs begin mid-September;
volunteers may be accepted anytime as space is available. Volunteers must commit to a consistent day for a minimum
one season of school year (fall, winter, spring).

tation sessions are available at www.wakemanclub.org. Click “Outreach”, then “Teen Volunteer Opportunities”. .

a fun and safe environment for over 250 children in grades 3-8.  Children travel throughout the 23,000 square foot

help with school projects and homework assignments.  Each afternoon, the Teen Lounge is filled with high school
members participating in college preparedness and job readiness programs like diplomas 2 Degrees and Career-
Launch.  Our teens learn about colleges, the application process and learn how to create a resume and enhance their
interview skills through these programs.  At night the gym is filled with the sound of squeaking sneakers as boys and
girls work on their basketball skills and the game room is bouncing with activity each night and on Saturdays as kids
enjoy some Wakeman favorites like carpet bowling and ping pong. Other favorite programs include STEM Mentoring,
