PROCESS AND MATERIAL SPECIFICATION

1. GENERAL

This Document shall not be used as a basis for manufacture and supply of
original and replacement parts to AIRBUS INDUSTRIE unless specifically
required in a contract or purchase agreement .

This specification gives the requirements for various grades of water used
to make up and top-up processing solutions and certain rinsing baths .
Advice on rinsing methods is also given .

1 .2 WARNING : IT IS PERMISSIBLE TO USE A SUPERIOR GRADE OF WATER IN LIEU OF AN

INFERIOR GRADE BUT NOT VICE-VERSA FOR SOLUTION MAKE UP, TOP UP
OR RINSING .

SUPPLY TAPS AND STORAGE TANKS SHALL BE CLEARLY IDENTIFIED TO

INDICATE THE WATER CLASS, AND THEREFORE , SUITABLE FOR RINSING ,
PROCESSING SOLUTION, ETC ., IN ACCORDANCE WITH TABLE 1 .

WATER SUPPLIES NOT SUITABLE FOR DRINKING MUST BE MARKED NON-

POTABLE WATER .

2. EQUIPMENT, MATERIALS, PERS ONNEL

Not applicable

3. PROCESS

Three types of rinses are used

a) Preliminary rinsing .

b) Intermediate rinsing .

c) Final rinsing .

3 .1 Preliminary rinsing

The rinsing shall be with class C water prior to intermediate or final

rinsing and is designed to remove gross solution contamination .

3 .2 Intermediate rinsing

This rinsing shall be with class B water prior to final rinsing or after
removal from one solution in a processing sequence prior to immersion in
the next stage of the process .

3 .3 Final rinsing

This rinsing operation shall be with class A or B water depending upon

the requirements of the final dry surface e .g . adhesive bonded parts .

3 .4 Choice of rinsing methods

There are two rinsing methods :

Dead rinsing (periodic renewals) : The rinsing bath does not receive
clean water input and must be emptied and renewed .

Active rinsing (continuous renewal) : The rinsing bath continuously

receives an equal amount of clear water input as the contaminated
output .

A dead rinsing followed by an active rinsing represents, generally, the

most water economical solution .

In every case, it is possible to carry out an active rinsing instead of a

dead rinsing .

If the active rinsing is performed after a concentrate bath, it can be no

economic to recycle water . It will be better to lead water to a detoxica-
tion station .

3 .5 Choice of application method

Spray rinsing alone is a good solution for final rinsing, but it may not
be sufficient with parts having a high retention characteristic .

The spray rinsing is effective only if it can achieve each side of the
parts . For that, some areas of recovery between two or serveral parts will
be eliminated .

In such cases an immersion rinse followed by a spray is the preferred

method .

4. QUALITY REQUIREMENTS

4 .1 Check and follow-up of water characteristics

The quality of the water being used shall be checked where applicable for
conformance against the requirements of Table 1 at a TBD frequency .

4 .2 Equipment of demineralzed water

Equipment supplying demineralized water, grade A, shall be continuously

monitored by a resistivity meter and fitted with an audible alarm and
preferably an automatic shut off valve .
