1. Purpose
The purpose of this standard operating procedure (SOP) is to be certain that computers being sold
through the eBay department, and or at the SDFF store, function properly.

2. Prerequisites
It is recommended that specialists have some experience in electronic device troubleshooting,
diagnostics, and repair.
3. Diagnostics on HP Computers
1. Properly open bottom of assembly
2. Once bottom assembly is opened, carefully install memory modules in all empty DIMM slots
visible
 There is usually only two that are located at the bottom of HP assemblies
3. Turn on computer while tapping the “ESC” button on the keyboard
 This will take you to the startup menu
4. Once in startup menu, tap “F2” on your keyboard
 This will take you to System Diagnostics
5. Once in System Diagnostics, run the memory test and the extensive hard drive test.

4. Diagnostics on Toshiba Computers


1. If asked by mentor, remove screws from bottom of assembly and remove cover
2. Once bottom assembly is opened, carefully install memory modules in all empty DIMM slots
visible
3. Turn on computer while tapping the “F10” key on your keyboard
 This will take you to the Toshiba Diagnostics menu
4. Once on this menu run both the HDD/SSD test on full mode and the memory test

7. Boot Options on HP computers to install Ubuntu


1. Insert USB stick containing Ubuntu into any slot available
2. Turn on your computer and tap the “ESC” key on your keyboard
 This will take you to the startup menu
3. Once you’re in the startup menu, tap “F9” to go into boot device options
4. Once you’re in the boot options, select the USB drive that will be used to install Ubuntu

8. Boot Options on Toshiba Computers to install Ubuntu


1. Insert USB stick containing Ubuntu into any slot available
2. Turn on your computer and tap the “F2” key
 This will take you to the startup menu
3. Once in the startup menu, go onto “advanced” on the side menu
4. Once on the “advanced” menu go to “change boot order”
 This will
5. Move the USB stick being used to install Ubuntu all the way up to make sure it is prioritized
over other boot options
6. Click on “Ok,” then push the “F10” key to save and exit

11. Installing Ubuntu on all Assemblies


1. Once your boot options are set to boot from the USB stick containing Ubuntu, go ahead and
restart the assembly
2. Once the computer turns back on a purple screen will pop up with the Ubuntu logo at the
bottom of the screen
 As soon as you see this logo hit the space button
3. After hitting the space button a language menu will pop up
 Select “English”
4. After selecting your language, a new screen will appear that says “Ubuntu” along with other
options on installing it
5. Once on this screen tap the “F4” key and tap enter on “OEM install (for manufacturers)”
6. After selecting this mode, go to “Install Ubuntu”
7. This will take you to a welcome screen
 There will a place for you to type in a username
 Make the username “Refurb”
8. After creating your username, a new screen will appear where you will have the option to
connect to the internet, wirelessly
 Don’t connect to any networks, wirelessly, instead connect your Category 5 cable into
your computer
9. After connecting your CAT5 cable, a new screen will appear that will say “prepare to install
Ubuntu”
 Select “download updates while installing Ubuntu”
10. After selecting the proper install, a new screen will pop up saying “installation type”
 Click “Erase disk and install Ubuntu” and “install now”
11. A new screen will appear saying “where are you”
 Leave it as it and just click on continue
12. After this screen a keyboard layout will appear
 Keep this layout as it and just click on continue
13. After this screen a screen will appear saying “Who are you?”
 This screen will give you an option to choose a password, make the password be
“password”
14. Once completed with these steps, let Ubuntu install
15. Once Ubuntu is finished installing, safely eject the USB stick
 If you are using a Toshiba, move HDD/SSD to the top on the boot priority options by
going to the startup menu
16. After Ubuntu officially is installed and you are in the operating system, go to the top right
corner and click on the gear option
 This will open up a small menu, click on “about this computer”
17. Once you have done that, your settings will open up on “overview,” click on install updates
18. After installing updates go ahead and restart the computer
19. This will finish the process of the installation of Ubuntu

13. Testing the Computer After Installation of Ubuntu


1. Test all ports on computer (even the Ethernet port)
 This includes all USB ports and the SD card port
 Also test ports such as HDMI, VGA, DVI, AND DP
2. Once finished testing ports go onto your settings and test your webcam and your
Bluetooth
3. After doing this, you want to test the left and right speakers along with the built in
microphone
 You redo these steps but with your headphones on
 We do this to verify that the headphone jack is functioning properly
4. After you test this, you will disconnect your category 5 cable and connect to the internet
wirelessly
5. Once you have connected to the internet go onto “Keyboardtester.com”
 Go through our keyboard and tap each key three times
6. When you’ve completed testing the keyboard, test your mouse and pointer stick to make
sure they function properly
7. If there are any buttons on the computer, make sure to test those as well
8. This is end of the testing process

14. Preparing Computer for eBay


1. You must clean the computer using the following items
 Goo Gone, Simple Green, and Water
 Be very careful while using these liquids
 Be sure to remove any asset labels before cleaning
2. After cleaning the computer, you must take photos to list on eBay later

15. Giving the Computer an Evaluation
