I. Objectives
At the end of a 60-minute period, the second year high school students are expected to do the following with 75%
proficiency:
References: Adea, E. B., et al., 2003. Science and Technology II. Pg. 326-333.
Materials: Illustration/pictures, computer, LCD, white board marker and white board.
A. Daily Routine
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
-Prayer
Pls. stand up and let us pray. (The students will stand and the prayer leader of the day will
lead a prayer)
(After the prayer) Pls. arrange your chairs and sit (The students will arrange their chair and sit properly).
properly.
-Checking of Attendance
I will now check your attendance. Say present when I Yes Sir!
call your names.
(The teacher will check the attendance) (The students will response when their names will be called).
Gerly, pls. define biodiversity. Sir, biodiversity refers to all forms of life.
Very good! Now, who can give me the three levels of (The students will raise their hands).
biodiversity?
Arnel, pls. enumerate the three levels of biodiversity. Sir, the three levels of biodiversity are genetic, species and
ecosystem diversity.
Good. Are you ready for our new lesson? Yes Sir! We are ready.
C. Motivation
Class I will show you pictures of different organisms. I (The students will do so).
will give you three (3) minutes to study these pictures.
(The teacher will show pictures of different organisms on
screen.).
Before we proceed to our next lesson, I will divide you (The students will count and form a group).
into three groups. (The teacher will group the class by
counting off. The students that have the same number
will form one group.)
Now, pls. write all the importance of all organisms that Yes Sir!
are being reflected on the screen. I will give you three
(3) minutes to finish what is being written there. Is that
clear?
E. Lesson Proper
Who wants to report first? (Each group representative will raise their hands).
The Group 1 will share their output first. Classmates we have identified the importance of different
(The teacher will write on the board the importance of organisms. Plants provide food to us, animals like insects serves
every organism mentioned ) as pollinators, seaweeds serve as food,
Very good! Let’s give them three claps. Who is the next (The representative of each group will raise their hands.)
reporter?
Malou please share the output of your group. Classmates, our group identified the following importance of the
(The teacher will write on the board the importance of organisms that were shown on the screen. Bacteria serves as
every organism mentioned ) fertilizer, fungi decomposes logs, animals provide food, plants
protect us from storms and protists like seaweeds provide food to
us.
The next reporter will be the Group 3. Please share your Classmates, our group identified the following importance of
group output. those organisms: plants provide medicine, animals like birds
(The teacher will write on the board the importance of plant trees, fungi provide food and protists provide habitat to
every organism mentioned ) various organisms.
Now, let’s go back to what you have reported. (The The studens will listen.
teacher will discuss the importance of biodiversity based
on what they have mentioned. He will add other
information that was not mentioned by the students).
Do you have any question with regards to the No Sir.
importance of biodiversity?
Class did you know that biodiversity is now threatened? Yes Sir!
Can you name some threats? (The students will raise their hands).
Arnel pls. give one threat to biodiversity. Sir slash and burn farming.
That’s correct. Why do you think it becomes a threat? Sir it destroys the forest and the habitat of various organisms.
Very good! What else? (The students will raise their hands).
That’s right! But why do you think poverty becomes Sir people are force to use and depend to our natural resources
threat to biodiversity? because they have no other source of their daily needs.
Very good! What else? (The students will raise their hands).
That’s correct. How does mining affects biodiversity? Sir it destroys the mountains where the plants and other
organisms live.
That’s right. But why using dynamite in fishing becomes Sir it destroys coral reefs and kills fishes as well as other marine
threat to biodiversity? organisms.
F. Generalization
Class I will show you a picture of various organisms Yes Sir.
(The teacher will show the pictures of the organisms).
Pls. pay attention on the pictures. Just consider that
these pictures composed one big ecosystem and the
man is in the center of that ecosystem.
What will happen if I will take the mushroom/fungi out (The students will raise their hands).
from this ecosystem? (The teacher will remove the
picture of fungi).
Gene pls. answer the question. Sir the number of organisms that provide food will be reduced.
The decomposers will be lessen.
Excellent answer! What will happen if I will take the (The students will raise their hands).
bacteria out of this ecosystem? (The teacher will remove
the picture of bacteria).
Grace what is your answer? Sir the organism that gives fertilizer to plants will be removed,
therefore the plants will die. Moreover, the decomposition of
dead organisms will be slowed down.
Yes, that’s right. And what will happen if all plants will (The students will raise their hands).
die? (The teacher will removed all plants in the picture).
Bahirudin, pls. share your idea. Sir all animals on that ecosystem will die because they have no
food and no source of oxygen. Flood and water shortage will also
devastate that ecosystem.
Very good! And what will happen to this ecosystem if (The students will raise their hands).
there are no animals?
Maru pls. state your answer. Sir, the source of food will be lessen. No pollinators will pollinate
the plants. So, the plants will not bear fruits and cannot
reproduce. Source of carbon dioxide will be lessen that will
hinder the growth of plants.
Are there any reasons for those organisms mentioned to Yes Sir.
become extinct?
What are those? (The students will raise their hands).
Lilia pls. give your answer. Sir, the organisms that we have mentioned may become extinct
possibly due to different threats like mining, slash and burn
farming, dynamite fishing and over extraction due to poverty.
G. Application
We will start with group number 1. (Group 1 will present their interview).
(After the presentation). Very good. Give them five (Students will do so).
claps.
Group 2 will be our next presenter. (Group 2 will do so)).
(After the interview). Very nice presentation. Give them (Students will do so).
five claps.
Group 3 pls. present your output. (Group 3 will present their interview).
(After the interview). Excellent! Give them five claps. (Students will do so).
IV. Evaluation
Pls. get ¼ sheet of pad paper and we will have a short (The students will follow).
quiz. Pls. listen carefully to the direction. I will read the
question twice.
Direction. Write the letter of the correct answer on your paper.
1. Which of the following organisms help in the decomposition of dead organisms?
a. Plants b. fungi c. animals d. seaweeds.
8. Absorbing carbon dioxide and giving off oxygen is one of the importances of ____________________.
a. fungi b. horse c. plants d. protozoa
9. This activity destroys the coral reefs and kills other marine organisms.
a. logging b. swimming c. surfing d. dynamite fishing
V. Assignment
Read the topics on pages 334-338 of your Science and Technology textbooks. Then, answer the following on ½ sheet
of paper.
1. List at least five (5) ways to conserve biodiversity.
2. As youth, how can you help in conserving biodiversity?
