Hereditary
The hereditary principle is followed in the United Kingdom, Nepal, Japan, Denmark,
Spain, Iran Brunei and Malaysia for the appointment of the chief executive or the
head of state. In these states, the king, queen, monarch or the emperor is chosen by
virtue of the principle of hereditary succession. The term of office is for life. The
power monarch in most of these countries is constitutionally limited.
Direct election
The choice of the Chief Executive by the direct vote of the people is the opposite
principle of the hereditary method. This method is the vindication of the principle of
popular sovereignty. It grants the people the right to elect their Chief Executive who
should represent their will and enjoy their confidence.
Indirect election
Appointed
Through this method, some executives are appointed directly by the person in
power. For example, in the United States of America, the president will assemble a
team of advisors. This group of people are nominated by the President himself with
the consent of the Senate. When the President names his new cabinet, he will follow
a few steps. Firstly, he will submit the nomination to the senate in writing. The
nomination will then be referred to the corresponding committee with jurisdiction over
the position or the agency in which the position exists. At this point, a hearing may
take place. Once a nominee is place on the Senate’s Executive Calendar, floor
consideration of the nomination may occur to determine the suitability of the
nominee. The White House is then notified of the confirmation or rejection of the
nominee. This will be inducted into the Congressional Record detailing all the
nominees and action taken on them.
