MIDTERM EXAMINATION
22 December 2009 • Duration: 90 minutes
SUBJECT: CALCULUS I
Acting Head of Dept of Mathematics Lecturers:

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dinh N.N.Hai, J.C.Harris, J.J.Strodiot, M.D.Thanh

INSTRUCTIONS:
Answer any FIVE of the seven questions. Each question carries a total of 20 marks.
Calculators and dictionaries allowed. All other documents prohibited.

Question 1. Biologists have observed that the chirping rate of a certain insect is
linearly related to temperature. At a temperature of 15 C, the insect produces 47
chirps per minute, and at 30 C produces 209 chirps per minute.
(a) [10 marks] Sketch a graph of the chirping rate as a function of temperature, and
find the equation of the line.
(b) [5 marks] State the slope (that is, the gradient) of the line, including its units,
and explain its meaning to the biologists.
(c) [5 marks] If the insects are chirping at 236 chirps per minute, what is the
temperature?

Question 2.
(a) [10 marks] Let f (x) = x2 + 1 and g(x) = ln |x|. Find formulaefor the composite
functions f ◦ g, g ◦ f and state their domains. Also find f g(−1) .
(b) [4 marks] Is the curve (x − 1)2 + y 2 = 1 the graph of any function of x? Explain
your answer.
(c) [6 marks] What curve is represented by the parametric equations
x = cos t, y = sin t, 0 ≤ t ≤ π ?

Question 3. [Each part 5 marks]

Find the following limits, if they exist. If they do not exist, explain why.

1 x2 − 4x + 3 3x + 1 − 1
(a) lim 3 (b) lim 2 (c) lim
x→0 x x→3 x + x − 12 x→0 2x
x2 x sin x
(d) Given that 1− < <1 for all values of x close to zero,
6 2 − 2 cos x
x sin x
find lim .
x→0 2 − 2 cos x

Question 4.
(a) [10 marks] Sketch the graph of the function

cos πx,
 x<0
h(x) = 1 − x2 , 0≤x≤1.

1, x>1

State where the function h(x) is continuous, and where it is discontinuous.

(b) The graph below shows the displacement, s, of a moving object as a function
of time, t.
(i) [4 marks] Find the average velocity of the object over the time period [0, 6].
(ii) [6 marks] What is the instantaneous velocity when t = 5? when t = 2.5?

Question 5. Company data suggest that the total cost C, in dollars, of a 1200-mile
flight can be modelled by the function
C(x) = 0.0005x3 − 0.38x2 + 120x
where x is the number of passengers.
(a) [10 marks] Find the marginal cost function, and use it to estimate the cost of
an additional passenger if the flight already has 150 passengers.
(b) [5 marks] Compare your estimate with the actual cost of this additional passen-
ger.
(c) [5 marks] Is it more expensive to add an additional passenger when the flight
already has 150 passengers or when it has 200? Justify your answer.

Question 6.
dy
(a) [6 marks] Given y = xe−1/x , find dx .
(b) [14 marks] Find the equation of the tangent line to the curve exy = x + y at the
point P = (−1, 1.28). Find also the equation of the normal to the curve at P .

Question 7. Consider the function f (x) = tan x.

(a) [10 marks] Find the linearization of f (x) at x = π4 .
(b) [5 marks] Use the linearization to estimate the value of tan( π4 + 0.05).
(c) [5 marks] Calculate the error and the percentage error in your answer.
