Ohio Pedestrian Fatality Report


Ohio Traffic Deaths Continue to Rise

In 2018, there were 131 pedestrian fatalities. The stats below represent all of these
fatalities:

• 94 Male (72%)
• 37 Female (28%)

• 29 Rural (23%)
• 102 Urban (77%)

Alcohol/Drug Impairment (29%)
• 31 involved alcohol and/or drugs suspected for pedestrians (24%)
a. 6 intersection related, 25 not at intersections
i. 11 involved pedestrian walking in roadway*
ii. 11 involved pedestrians crossing the roadway*
1. In 2 of these the pedestrian was in marked crosswalk
iii. 6 involved pedestrians lying in roadway
iv. 2 involved pedestrians on the interstate/freeway
• 17 involved alcohol and/or drugs suspected for drivers (13%)
a. 2 intersection related, 15 not at intersections

Hit/skip involvement – 38 fatalities (Driver fleeing scene) (29%)
• 30 urban, 8 rural
• 31 non-intersection related, 7 were intersection related
a. 19 were in lane of travel (16 urban)
i. 4 were lying in roadway
ii. 6 walking across road
iii. 8 walking in travel lane
b. 2 were workers (Both on freeway)
c. 9 were walking/standing on side of road (8 non-intersections)
d. 2 in marked crosswalks, 4 in unmarked crosswalks

Location of Pedestrian Fatalities
• 25 were Intersection Related (19%)
a. 11 in marked crosswalks (All urban areas)
i. 3 did not have ‘walk’ symbol
ii. 2 had active ‘walk’ symbol
iii. 6 unknown
b. 6 in unmarked crosswalks
c. 5 vehicles were making left hand turns at the intersections
d. 3 vehicles were making right hand turns at the intersections

• 24 occurred on Interstate/Freeway routes (limited access) (18%)
a. 10 were motorists outside of vehicles/roadside emergencies or previous
crashes
i. 3 crashes were double pedestrian fatalities
b. 5 were workers (1 officer, 3 Construction workers, 1 ODOT Worker)
c. 9 were either walking in travel lanes, crossing the freeway, or walking on
ramp
d. 2 of these were on the Turnpike

• 3 occurred at the End of driveways crossing road to retrieve mail (2%)
a. All rural locations and pedestrian ages were 84, 80, 74

• 66 occurred with pedestrian in travel lane (50%)
a. 20 were crossing the roadway* (midblock, unmarked locations)
b. 22 were walking in roadway* (in travel lanes)
c. 9 were lying in the roadway
d. 5 were motorists outside of vehicles/roadside emergencies or previous
crashes

• 15 occurred with pedestrian on side of road (9%)
a. 15 were walking or standing on side of road
b. 6 were not in the roadway
i. 3 occurred on sidewalks

*Crossing the roadway means the pedestrian was intending to cross the
roadway, whereas walking in roadway means that the pedestrian was walking
in the travel lanes either with traffic or against traffic.

Special conditions
• 7 involved workers
a. 1 Police Officer (hit-skip)
b. 3 construction workers
c. 1 ODOT worker
d. 1 Flagger
e. 1 Trash Collector

• 9 Child Pedestrian Fatalities (15 yrs old or younger)
a. Majority of these were between 6-9 years old
b. Half of these were children darting into the travel lanes

• Unique occurrences
a. 3 involved wheelchairs
a. One in crosswalk
b. One in travel lane moving with traffic
c. One crossing road in travel lane
b. 1 electric (Stand-up) scooter that was rear-ended
