Course description

■ The Quality of Service course (QoS) explains the basis regarding the classification
and marking of packages, control algorithms and congestion elimination in data
networks.
■ QoS techniques used from the service provider`s point of view are also reviewed, for
the deployment of new service packages with special traffic requirements.
Objectives

General Objective:
■ To estimate quality of service parameters in data networks by the set-up of metrics,
techniques and models related to congestion planning and control for prioritizing the
critical traffic in a data network.

Additional questions:
■ What is a metric?
■ What do you understand about critical traffic?
Objectives

Learning Objectives:
■ To analyze different quality models of existing services for better traffic control in
medium-scale networks.
■ To identify the different blocks and algorithms that are part of a system that is
configured with quality of services parameters in a data network in order to apply
them in convergent networks.
■ To set-up devices that allow quality of services in a data network for the
improvement of the end-user experience.

Project guidelines

■ Define the problem, but focusing on a solution or analysis that encompasses with
QoS.
■ Define a client. Very IMPORTANT.
■ Establish a hypothesis.
■ There MUST be a comparison with other systems or some validation.
■ Reference all theoretical contents using brackets, with valid references (no wikis,
nor open/free web-based sites).
Project topics (not limited):

■ QoS support in multimedia systems.

■ Performance in point-to-point protocols over networks (wired or wireless).
■ Multicasting.
■ Aspects of the transport layer.
■ Multi-haul routing, ad hoc and sensor networks? Congestion analysis.
■ Security and privacy? Power supply management.
■ Queueing theory.
■ Digital modulation.

Technical questions to be addressed

 How feasible is to establish a connectivity or transmission system?

 Is a delay acceptable in a data network?
 What is the "Post-Dialing Delay"?
 Are trunks/carriers always available?
Economic questions to be addressed

■ Is the fare being carried out correctly for a given transmission system?
■ How can I establish a cost-benefit relationship for a data network?
■ How can I measure a customer satisfaction?
■ What are the parameters to consider when deploying a Tx/Rx system?
