Germany is a symbol of technical excellence.

As technical skills and excellence cannot be achieved

without excellent education, it is therefore a promising destination for higher education. The fact that
many of Germany’s institutions of higher education charge little or no tuition fee by international
comparison apprised me of the importance Germany holds in higher education. I also value the fact
that many breakthroughs industrial practices have been originally envisaged by German
establishments.
The extensive deviations in Worldwide Mechanization in addition Design Engineering
have obligated the act of mechanical engineer indeed crucial. It has been my sincere
wish to be chosen as part of speedily growing industry. Owing respect to the
Subdivision and the Institution, I carve this Statement of purpose.

In order to achieve the heights of excellence, I expect learning in a right surroundings

and a decent campus with a fulfilling study package, where the exploration amenities
are outstanding is greatly required.

The concept of mobility in machines controlled by human beings seemed like magic to
me ever since my childhood. This fascination has since been responsible for my
inclination towards engineering. I have been an automobile fanatic right since my
primary schooling days.

I was in my 8th grade when I decided to be an automobile engineer with my ambition to

excel in engineering. I became involved in automobile engineering which brought me a
step closer to my dream. However, during my first few years, I struggled in mathematics
as a result of which I acquired a number of backlogs which resulted in 2 alternate year
drops.

Being undeterred, I cleared mathematics as well as I utilised that time to obtain a

Master Diploma in Product Design using CADD software to assist me virtually designed
concept of a product I could visualise. This was followed by a 10 week industrial
internship at TATA Motors Ltd. (Leading Indian automobile manufacturing company, 17 th
largest automobile manufacturer in the World by volume) which benefited me
understand the various processes involved in a manufacturing industry.

I learned the importance of assertiveness, punctuality, precision and discipline while

working on a project using the concepts of Six Sigma.

My confidence cultivated as the years passed by following which, I was blessed with the
opportunity to live my dream, me and my team qualified for Formula Student Germany
(FSG) 2014. Being the designer of the first FSAE car of the college with FSG, I was
destined to implement and enhance my knowledge to develop the space frame chassis
body, suspension uprights and differential mounts which involved immense research.

As we were preparing for the competition, we also qualified for the first FS-international
event of our country, the Formula Student India. On visiting Germany, I recognized that
what I have so far grasped is just a drop compared to the ocean of race-car
engineering. This was the moment when I felt the necessity to study further and learn
more. In order to help myself with the best education for my level, I made a selection of
pursuing my Masters in Mechanical engineering.
Excellence, I believe, can be achieved by determination, dedication, and hard work over
and above with the use of in-depth knowledge. On rigorously searching for appropriate
courses, I came across the immense options provided at Iowa State University.

The M.S in Mechanical engineering with the research area of Design and Manufacturing
Innovation was just the all-in-one package I could dream. On further research, I
approached the Cyclone Racing FSAE team of your university, which also uses a space
frame chassis. I aspire to be selected a part of it so that I can contribute my best to the
team while I learn and implement my research.

As my objective is to work in a challenging automotive company, it would be a privilege

being educated under senior lecturer Emmanuel Agba as I believe his areas of interest
cover all my aspirations. It would be my privilege learning under a Six Sigma Black belt
certified person. I am fully aware of the financial and intellectual requirements and I
assure you that I have the necessary resources to fulfil these requirements. I look
forward to be a part of your prestigious university.

Provided a break, I shall attempt to conduit my immoderate hard work into further
industrious opportunities

The modern day world is driven by wheels but the intensity and versatility of its usage could
have been unthinkable at the time of its invention itself. The power of engine got attached to
it at a later stage and now it plays a vital role in our lives than ever before. These engines
and the whole science behind it is now quite diverse and exciting. It is shaping our world for
the future. The man on the steering of a vehicle takes control of a modern day machine
which is the manifestation of thousand hands used in its manufacturing. The engineering at
the heart of this sector, i.e., Automotive Engineering offers a challenging and demanding
career enabling engineers to build machines that do not require direct human energy.

My passion for Automotive takes me to the memories of my childhood when I had a great
interest in Racing Sports and Cars. Human beings are obsessed with the idea of command
and control over things and the idea of controlling a car has always been very thrilling and
invigorating. Since my school days I have been deeply impressed by the local mechanic to
whom my father used to take the car and he carried the image of a qualified, experienced
doctor who understands the pulse of the patients. Then I read about Enzo Ferrari, the
founder of Ferrari and the first owner of Ferrari F1 team (1940), and later science studies in
school provided a discipline to these childhood impressions and thoughts and bred the
desire to study this branch of engineering. The car manuals have always appealed me like
interesting short stories and industry news were and are at the top of my first hand general
knowledge. I have been reading Auto Pages, the most popular automotive magazine in
Pakistan. Cable TV started its transmission in Pakistan about 15 years back and became
very popular as it was considered as most cheap and comprehensive source of information
that every family can afford. As I also belong to a middle class family we also bought cable
TV connection. Channels like Discovery and National Geographic became my inspiration
towards automobiles and automation of machines Programs like American Chopper, Biker
Build Off and American Hotrod further developed my interest towards automobiles.

My craze for automotive did not let my studies be affected and in line with the demands of
the Pakistani Education System, I have always maintained overall high academic standards
and secured 85.42% and 82% of marks in the S.S.C and H.S.S.C Examinations, and 2.83
CGPA in B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering, respectively. The Medium of Instruction in my
sixteen years education was English and I have also passed SAT I Examination.

Currently, I am a student of Mechanical Engineering, as it is considered the 2nd most

prestigious branch of engineering in Pakistan and no university in Pakistan offers
Automotive Engineering. I have studied subjects like Engineering Mathematics I and II
(Integration, Differentiation, Differential Equation, Partial Differential Equation and Fourier
series), Mechanics of Materials I , Thermodynamics I and II, Machine Design, Theory of
Machine tools, Engineering Mechanics , Workshop practices, Basic Engineering Drawing,
Heat & Mass Transfer, Mechanical Vibrations, Instrumentation and Control, Stress Analysis
which will help me in pursuing Automotive Engineering. I also have a good professional
knowledge of software's like AutoCAD, C++, CATIA, ANSYS and Pro E. Presently I am also
a member of organizations like American Society of Mechanical Engineers ASME and
Society of Automobile engineers, SAE. After studying the subject of Thermodynamics and
Machine Design in University, other vistas of automotive engineering and designing have
opened to me, convincing me for a specialization therein. But still I feel that I am not happy
because it was not my actual desire or the thing which I really wanted to do. I still feel that
one's skills are better polished in the field which he likes not in the field which is imposed on
him.

"Solar Water pump with GSM integrated automation" was the topic of my research project
which I completed during the final year of B.sc Mechanical Engineering. It is a prototype of
water pump which is being operated on solar energy and is being controlled by GSM
module. In agricultural areas it can work as an automated tube well.

It has long been my ambition to pursue my studies in Automotive Engineering and to do it

from a country like Italy will be a golden opportunity of my life. I know that not only Germany
has got good reputation for higher education around the world but is also ranked among the
8 most industrialized countries in the world along with among top ten contenders of
automobiles manufacturing (Quantity). Its automotive industry is among the top
manufacturers in the world with famous BMW and Mercedes as the leading success story of
quality, modernity and comfort in automobiles.

A degree from a University like ------ would serve as a solid base for a successful career in
engineering, where hopefully, I would be involved in the development of new technology for
cleaner, economic and more efficient transportation systems. After the completion of my
degree I will be able to serve German Automobile Industry and can even serve my country
Pakistan because there will be a booming industry established up to that time.

I am very much looking forward to education challenges at the university. I am equally

enthralled with the idea of meeting people hailing from different cultures and backgrounds
existing at the university campus and I believe that I will be able to adapt to the life there.
But most importantly I claim to have the prerequisites for the achievement of a good degree
and to progress as a person, which are none other than but hard work, patience and
perseverance. These features act as a foundation for any success in this world.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

“The value of higher education is to make men aware of what was and what is, to incite them to
probe into what might be.”

Otto Keppler

The knowledge acquired in schools and colleges, I believe is not an education, but the means to it. It
is this belief that makes me ‘a student to the end of my days’: the obvious direction being curiosity to wards
exploration.

One of the memories of my childhood I deeply cherish is that of my first day in school. I distinctly
remember my eyes watering as my parents bade me good-bye leaving me in an alien environment. We were
made to draw pictures of familiar objects, my teacher recited rhymes in a soothing voice and by the end of
the day I began to love school. I was fortunate to have begun with a good early education and as I grew, my
interests and ability were inclined towards the physical nature of the universe. Science unraveled many a
mystery for me math challenged me and gave me joy. Learning itself became key to my life.

My respect for education and inclination towards applied science drove me to opt for math, physics
and chemistry in my higher secondary education. After completing my high school, I felt that Engineering
would be the area, which would give me the opportunity to learn and explore how the fundamentals of
science are applied to create technology for practical and real purposes. Moreover, my innate strengths have
always been creative abilities and the power of imagination; which made me take up a discipline that would
allow me to channel them in the best possible way. Thus, Mechanical engineering was a direct consequence of
my convictions. Subjects like Manufacturing Process, CAD/CAM, Metal cutting & Machine Tool
Engineering, Machine Design, Industrial Management, Kinematics & Dynamics of Machines,
Automotive Engineering, Applied Thermodynamics, Control Systems Engineering etc., revealed to
me limitless horizons in the field of Mechanical Engineering. My undergraduate study was a richly rewarding
experience, during which I have participated various Industrial training programs.

The pursuit for knowledge has been the supreme goal in my life. We are in an era of global and
technological changes where boundaries are fast disappearing and the greatest challenge tomorrow holds for
us is to manage continuity of change. To satiate my curiosity and to fulfill my ambitions I have decided to
pursue a masters program in Mechanical Engineering. I would like to get involved in research work in this
area. Although there is a vast scope for research in this area, the scope for research in India is limited. The
need for exposure to a wider environment has prompted me to seek an opportunity to study in the United
States. The ever-increasing part played by computers in every discipline of Engineering and their synergetic
role in manufacturing procedures called ‘Computer Integrated Manufacturing’ or CIM has encouraged me to
learn various design application software packages like Auto Cad 2002& Pro-E.
To tell you more about my interest, the final year project, Design of Horizontal Machining
center Spindle Line Elements which aims at incorporating few features of standard Design models, was
an opportunity to gain knowledge of design applications in Mechanical Engg. The 4 years degree
undergraduate course has not only provided me strong fundamentals, but also has encouraged me to learn
more and goaded me to continue research related activities. My immediate career objective is a master’s
degree in Engineering followed by a PhD and research oriented career in industry or academia. The choice
of a good university with a faculty dedicated to teaching and research and an atmosphere conducive to
learning, thus becomes extremely necessary.

After going through your website I found that by taking graduate studies at your University, I would be
able to venture out into various subject domains and also develop a strong sense of independence coupled
with responsibility and self-reliance, characteristic of the American culture. It would also help me to learn
global standards in this field and become aware of the worldwide competition, which I consider would be a
great help for me to make a strong contribution in the field of Mechanical Engineering. Your university with
its unique graduate program in Mechanical Engineering and with its commitment to foster intellectual
excellence is remarkable and attractive to embark upon an academic career.

I would be glad if given a research or a teaching assistantship because in addition to easing the
financial burden on me, it would go a long way in preparing me for a career in research and teaching. I look
forward to a challenging career in research which may even be arduous and demanding at times but I am
confident that with my sincerity and dedication, I will be able to make a meaningful contribution to the on
going research developments and live up to the high standards expected off your university.

Given an opportunity, I shall strive to channel my unbridled efforts into more productive avenues.

Technology is driven by need. Inventors often have an uncanny skill of resolving situations with their
innovations. But what separates engineers from mere innovators is the ability to recognize the importance of
sustainable technological solutions for the future. Although many of our needs and predicaments remain the
same, the answers keep changing with time. My ability to be proactive in this matter makes me stand apart. In
addition to finding out how a machine operates, I’ve always been interested in design aspects and monitoring
the incipient faults occurring within machines. This urge has strengthened my ability to recognize the scope for
improvement and also motivated me to look beyond the conventional functionalities of any machine.

Ever since my school days, I’ve been interested in the theoretical frameworks in Mathematics and Sciences,
which drive the physical world. I have received grades with magna cum laudeboth in my 10th and 12th grade.
Engineering, at this point of time, seemed as a natural extrapolation of my abilities and interests. The amazing
task of moving the world is the monopoly of machines, so I made Mechanical engineering my choice. I
successfully cleared the ‘All India Engineering Entrance Examination’ (AIEEE) which placed me within the
top 2% bracket amongst over 800,000 takers. With a score of 98 percentile in AIEEE I enrolled in the
discipline of Mechanical Engineering at National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (NITR). My
undergraduate education at the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (NITR) has provided a thorough
exposure to the various specialties available in Mechanical Engineering, thus stimulating interest in advanced
research.
At the Indian Railways Coach Workshop I worked on Maintenance of Railway Coaches using NDT methods.
The project involved the application and checking the viability of the present NDT methods for detecting flaws
in the various mechanical components of the coaches. The first phase of the project involved the study of the
various faults occurring in coach components and the NDT methods used to detect them. In the second phase I
worked on introducing other prevalent NDT methods like Wear debris monitoring, infrared thermography and
shock pulse method. While working on them, I proposed their use in different areas to determine faults. The
applications of Wear debris monitoring for roller bearings, inspection of alternator bearings by shock pulse
method, to name a few. The industrial project enabled me to appreciate the various techniques developed in
fault determination and the impact cutting edge research has in developing better technologies. I continued my
research in this field of NDT by undertaking academic project of Gear Drive Fault Detection through Vibration
Analysis. Currently I am working on this project which involves investigating the various faults occurring in
gears with the help of vibration analysis which is based on the fact that faults, when they begin to occur, alter
the frequency spectrum of the gear vibration. The particular faults in the gear drive will be identified by
recognizing the growth of distinctive sideband patterns in the spectrum. This project coupled with current
study of Vibration & Noise Engineering allowed me to develop an understanding of vibration as an integral
part of the design process and its role in determination of faults.

During my course of Engineering, I have not limited myself to a particular area of Mechanical Engineering. I
have secured a GPA of 4.5 out of a scale of 5 in the field of Design. Also, my keen interest to stay abreast with
the evolving methods of designing has helped me in gaining an appreciation for languages such as AutoCAD,
Catia and Fluent. In “CAD Venture” event, a 3-D design contest, conducted as a part of Confluence2K9-a
national level technical festival held in NITR, I was adjudged as the second best, amongst 500 other
participants. My current project on CFD analysis of flow of fluids in channels and pipes is helping me to gain a
deeper insight on the abilities and functions of Fluent.
My undergraduate engineering degree has left me with keen sense of appreciation for the need for evolution of
engineering & technology. A Masters degree will further equip me with intellectual depth and breadth along
with greater practical knowledge to face the professional and leadership challenges I will face in my career.
After a good deal of self-evaluation, I’ve decided to pursue graduate studies in Mechanical Engineering. This
decision naturally followed after carefully considering my academic background and areas of work.
The Mechanical Engineering program at your university provides……………………………………
I strongly believe that I can match the high standards of your university and contribute fruitfully to the research
endeavors at your university. I would be grateful to you, if I am accorded the opportunity to pursue my higher
studies.
Please don’t copy this Statement of purpose for Mechanical Engineering or use it for admissions.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

NAME: VIVIDH MAKHWANA

As this millennium comes to end, can see tremendous progress in my country. This is due to noticeable
change towards high technology, which my country has adopted and enveloped. As a result there is
continuous and sophisticated industrialization and the basic of all engineering i.e. mechanical had been
soft wired. The significant headway in product development during the last two decades has been no
small measure due to use of computer design and manufacture. Impact of this technology in
Automobile, Aerospace, Marine, Metallurgy and Power Plants has been phenomenal.

My inclination towards science began from childhood. I excelled in my school career. My candid and
industrious efforts enabled me to get admission in Mechanical Engineering at L.D. College of
st
Engineering, the 1 ranking college of Gujarat University in the year of 1992. My favorite subjects were
Dynamics of Mechanics, Heat and Mass Transfer, Operations Research, Control System Engineering and
Machine Design. The curriculum also included Auto CAD, Programming in ‘C’ and FORTRAN.

I joined the BIRLA COPPER just after my graduation. BIRLA COPPER is one of the largest copper smelter
in India and a group company of A.V. Birla Group. The technological know how of BIRLA COPPER is from
M/s. Otukompu Engineering of Finland. When I joined BIRLA COPPER it was under construction stage
and this gave me the opportunity to see the roots of the engineering. During last two years of my
experience at project stage I came in contact with latest technical developments and skilled
personalities from all over the world. The more practical training I have undergone, the more I want to
learn. This inspires me to go for higher studies and forms the basis of my desire to pursue my MS in USA.
I believe that by studying in a technological advanced country like yours, I will be able to further
enhance my knowledge with the opportunity of getting exposure to the latest development-taking
place.

Your university with its strong foundation, excellent infrastructure, adequate facilities of labs and
libraries and state of the art computer facilities will enable me to enhance my skills. Thus I will be able to
realize my professional goals. Opportunities in India for higher education are limited.

American education with inputs from associated industries provides expansion of faculties of the mind.
With variety of courses and comprehensive set of electives your course structure is very appealing. Your
university is an ideal place for aspiring students like me. I always wanted to be a part of an institution
like yours, which has faculty comprising of eminent scholars of international repute and provides a
stimulating education environment.

The Government of India had liberalized economic policies; as result of which a new window has opened
to receive technologies. This is creating ‘big-time’ opportunities for student graduating from American
Colleges. I desire to benefit from this liberalization. I am convinced that I can change the social and
technological environment of my country after graduating from your institute. I will be grateful if I get
financial assistance/scholarship/teaching assistantship.

I always believed that curiosity has been the cornerstone of man's evolution. I had this
curiosity and thirst for knowledge in me. Right from my childhood, I was interested in
Automobiles. I liked tinkering with objects. I always enjoyed analyzing and understanding
the working of Automobiles, starting from experimenting on my toys to fixing my bike. I
found 'Mechanical Engineering', the only way I can satisfy my quest for knowledge and
contribute.

Admission to Undergraduate courses in Engineering is through a screening test taken by

more than 100,000 students. This test requires a strong academic background at pre-
university level, with good analytical and quantitative skills. My performance in this
screening test provided me with the privilege of choice and I chose Mechanical Engineering
as my undergraduate major at ******* University, affiliated to AICTE. Four years of
Undergraduate studies in Mechanical Engineering introduced me to a multitude of topics
ranging from the very basics of Electrical machines, Basic electronics, Basic
thermodynamics and Kinematics to more advanced courses such as Applied
thermodynamics, Dynamics of machinery, Mechatronics, CNC machines, Manufacturing
Process, Automotive Engineering etc. These subjects have enriched my knowledge to an
extent that I feel eager to explore them further. Among which, Automotive engineering was
the subject which completely captivated my interest. The pleasure of learning was
augmented by the fact that I received continuous support and special encouragement from
my professors for my interest in learning. I also presented a technical paper on "Scuderi
Split cycle Engine" which was well appreciated by one and all and opened wider horizons
for me.

In the final semester I undertook a project, Standardization of Hydraulic Operators for

Different Sizes of Butterfly Valves in a Leading valve manufacturing company
'*******Limited', ******, India. Our objective was to have a standardized design of hydraulic
operator of different sizes of Butterfly valves. Previously, the designing of hydraulic
operator, mounting bracket and levers were done on case-to-case basis which was
laborious and time consuming. It was our intention that after our project is over, all the
hydraulic operators, mounting brackets and levers can be selected from a standardized
table which we succeeded eventually. The project mainly consisted of measuring and
calculating the various parameters of the components of the butterfly valves through
reverse engineering, interpreting these results into drawings and models through AutoCAD
and Pro-E for each component ranging over 25 different sizes of Butterfly valves. This
project has given me a great exposure in the field of design and most importantly the
method of interpreting the results in to drawings of the parts of the hydraulic operators,
mounting brackets and levers.
I took my Mechanical Engineering career to the next level as I worked as a Design Engineer
for a young but a promising Gearbox manufacturing company, *********. I have handled
projects on Gearbox designs for Steel plants, Defense purposes, Windmills and
Automobiles. The most challenging task was the Reverse Engineering of Gearboxes,
Practically measuring the critical dimensions, converting the hand sketches to 3D drawings
and incorporating the necessary modifications to the design to make sure they adhere to
the customers' requirement. I have attended Seminars on Pro-Engineer organized by PTC
and AUTOCAD 2011 organized by Autodesk, on behalf of the company. These experiences
honed and enhanced my skills in these softwares.

My intentions and ideas keep evolving every day and right now I stand at dreaming ten
years beyond, where I see myself working on my own innovative project. I would want to
start the realization of this dream by gaining deeper knowledge into my field of interest:
'Automotive Engineering'. A Masters in this field, followed by a doctorial would be my first
steps.

I strongly believe in constantly evolving nature of technology and would like to be a part of
the evolution. I think research is one best way we can constantly better our lives. After
learning about the research at your University, I am even more eager to join your pioneering
team and consider myself a suitable applicant for such research, given my analytical
background, ardent interest in the subject and brimming motivation. I have realized that the
existing graduate program perfectly suits my requirements and the ongoing research
program is in perfect accordance with my needs.

I strongly feel that the guidance of the capable, research-oriented faculty of your department
will make my graduate study at your university a fruitful endeavor. The fact that University of
****** stands unique with its infrastructure, faculty and resources, motivates me to be a part
of it and I believe that the above qualifications make me an excellent prospect for graduate
study. I sincerely hope that you would share my confidence by accepting me into your
esteemed institution.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to express myself.

Being an automobile enthusiast from childhood, my early interest circulated around an
automobile which includes collections of automobile magazines, spending time and
watching TV shows related to the same. This enriched my knowledge regarding assembly
lines of supercars, car modification, among many others. All these experiences resulted in
an incessant quest to know about every kind of automobile. To take my passion into the
formally organized state and to bring the element of academic updation in it, I decided to
pursue my graduation in "Automobile engineering" after completion of my senior secondary
schooling.

My college life was a mix of experience. Each day was either a challenge or learning.
Automobile as my specialization added to my pleasure and the subjects which I liked the
most are Automotive Engines and Transmission system, Automotive Chassis, Combustion
and Heat transfer and Vehicle Dynamics. And, my participation in projects like BAJA
SAEINDIA (-a competition where teams of undergraduate students are asked to design and
build a single-seater off-road vehicle and then test the endurance of the vehicle through
various performance metrics.) as in-charge of Transmission and Manufacturing sub-teams
had provided me an excellent opportunity to apply my classroom knowledge in practical, like
for example, how to determine the performance parameters of a vehicle by using vehicle
dynamics concepts. Being an In-charge of these two teams, I was responsible for the
designing and installation of the transmission system in our car as well as for choosing the
manufacturing method and assigning of material for the car components that we would
design. Apart from that, I also served as member of pit crew team during the race event and
my participation in this team project had helped me to acquire the qualities of Team spirit,
peer relationship, resilience, presentation skills and managing abilities and had also helped
me to learn about Project Plan's, DFMEA, and Design Validation Plan and their importance
for successfully bringing our design on ground. These all qualities have made me more
proficient at analyzing and solving engineering problems. The sheer thrill and satisfaction
that such participation gave me in discovering new concepts has driven me to make my
decision of applying for post graduate studies in motorsports engineering.

My involvement in such projects had also helped to me grab accolades like Technology
Innovation Award for successful implementation of "Variable Ratio Brake Pedal" in our baja
vehicle. The advantage of which is that our vehicle gets an improved braking efficiency as
well as driver gets less aggressive feel during panic braking as the pedal ratio changes
instantly i.e. increases with pedal travel, which is what favorable for off-road conditions; and
had also helped me to present a manuscript in National Symposium of green technologies
on "Use of customized manual gearbox of Mahindra Alfa/Ape Piaggio along with
continuously variable transmission (CVT) in BAJA vehicles to reduce CO2 emission along
with enhancement of performance"

The pleasure of my learning was augmented by the continuous support and special
encouragement from my professors for my interest in learning and research, which helped
to execute my Final year project on "Self Inflating Tire System" under guidance of Prof.
Gaurav Saxena. In this project, we attached an another supplementary system to the
compression unit of air brake system of commercial vehicles, in order to keep the tire
inflated under an event of puncture by continuous supply of air to tire or to maintains a tire
pressure as needed to traverse different kinds of path under dynamic condition.

I took my engineering studies to the next level by getting hand on experience in the field by
doing vocational trainings in C.S.M.T and in AUDI service center. During these trainings, I
inculcated about the basic functioning characteristics of whole of the vehicle sub-systems,
had learned the servicing & maintenance practices being performed on automobiles by
erudite personnel. Stepping away from my academics, I have always been an active
participant in extra-curricular activities right from my inchoate phase and had been a
member of various organizing committees during my college time.

To conclude, since my interest lies very much so within the realm of Automobile
Engineering. I believe a master's degree in Motorsports Engineering from IUPUI would
allow me the opportunity to join some motorsports team in near future. And, I strongly feel
that the guidance of the capable, motorsports research-oriented faculties like Peter Hylton
and Andrew Borme at IUPUI will make my graduate study a fruitful endeavor. During my
graduate studies, I want to base my research on technologies which would be beneficial to
both motorsports as well as production vehicles, and I believe that the above qualifications,
along with that of my research temperament would make me an excellent prospect for
graduate study and I sincerely hope that you would share my confidence by accepting me
into your esteemed institution.

A sense of curiosity is nature’s original school of education...

Curiosity is the engine of intellectual achievement — it’s what drives me to keep learning, keep trying,
keep pushing forward. I have been in awe of ‘Megafactories’ on the National Geographic Channel every
time I see it. Seeing the manner in which the cars are built and the various processes involved instilled a
desire in me to be part of the whole process. This coupled with a natural flair for science and
mathematics and most importantly passion for cars, planes, trains, trucks and all devices for
transportation, motivated me to take up Mechanical Engineering (MEE) for my undergraduate degree at
Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Chennai.

Studying subjects like manufacturing processes, transmission system design, theory of machines and
mechanisms gave me a clearer view of what I wanted to do. I seek to design, build and engineer cars and
trucks. During my +2 level course I had the opportunity to gain knowledge about basic machining
processes like facing, turning, drilling by hands-on experience in a college. ----------------(knowledge build
up in VIT through their courses)----------------------. During my final year, I completed a project in which I -
-----------------------------------------------------------------.

At IIT Bombay, I was introduced to the wide expanse of Aerospace

Engineering.
The core courses gave me a deep as well as broad exposure to the various
fields. During my sophomore and junior years, I found myself becoming more
and
more interested in {\bf Structural Mechanics and Composite Materials}. I
did
my Seminar {Junior thesis} on {\bf System Identification Techniques in
Structural Problems}, in which I compared various techniques of structural
identification for their merits and demerits. I am currently doing my
B.Tech. Project {Senior thesis} on the {\bf Thermo-Mechanical Analysis of
3D
Woven Composites}. In this project, I have developed a computational model
based on the Volume Averaging method for the prediction of the properties
of
orthogonally woven 3D composites, and am currently extending the model to
angle-weave composites. The significance of this project lies in the fact
that

Through my undergraduate course work, I was exposed to the various fields

in
Aerospace Engineering and I have found that the field that I enjoy working
in
most is that of {\bf Structural Mechanics and Composite Materials}. In my
courses, I have been exposed to static and dynamic analysis of Linear
Structures and introduced to Composite Materials. Beyond these, Non-linear
Structures, FEM, Structural Optimization, Smart Structures and
Aeroelasticity
are the other fields that interest me.

My long term goals as stated above are to take up research as a career. I
would like to develop myself as a researcher in multidisciplinary areas.
Based
on my current interests and background, I feel that I would be better at
theoretical and computational work. Hence, However, I also believe that
teaching is the best way to learn, and this will definitely make me an
enthusiastic teacher. Hence, a decade or so from now, I visualize myself
as a
full fledged research professional in a premier research laboratory or as
a
faculty member in a leading university.

The initiation of the process of original contribution is best done by

working
towards a Ph.D. I view the M.S. degree as an intermediate step in
achieving
this goal. Hence, I would like to take up an M.S. culminating in a Ph.D.
