Frequency band situation on LTE2600

LTE- FDD - Uplink LTE-TDD LTE – FDD - Downlink RAS

2500 2570 2620 2690 2700 MHz

RAS: - Radio Astronomy Service

- Passive service
- no guardband to LTE FDD Downlink band

Regulatory requirements e.g. for Germany:

• 60 – 100 km interference distance

• To RAS in Effelsberg (Germany) and Westerbork (Netherlands)!

Could be relevant also to RAS in other countries across Europe !

Conclusion & Design requirements:

• Avoid getting the 4 x 5MHz frequency blocks (20MHz) adjacent to

RAS: 2.67 – 2.69 GHz

• In case have got the 20MHz frequency channel from 2.65 – 2.67 GHz

– No deployment of LTE2600 in a radius of up to 30km

– Radius from 30 to 100km: Full 20MHz; 99dB attenuation required:
feasibility? (tbc)
– Radius from 30 to 100km: Adjacent 10MHz to be used as guard
band out of the 20MHz bandwidth with an additional filter of around
90dB attenuation. Could be applicable to the more NLOS case II:
– Adapt the azimut of the sites in order to direct the null of the azimut
diagram towards the RAS
– Tilt the elavation diagram to adapt the null or a minimum towards
the RAS
– Reduce the power of the eNode Bs
– Install a detection system close to the RAS to identify the received
LTE power level
LTE Radio&Transport of the eNode Bs and identify potential interferers

Frequency band situation on LTE2600

LTE- FDD - Uplink LTE-TDD LTE – FDD - Downlink RAS S-Band RADAR

2500 2570 2620 2690 2700 3100 MHz

RADAR: - Radio Detection and Ranging Service

- Active service
- Civilian air traffic control (ATC) operate at 2.7-2.9GHz range
- Meterological Radar at 2.7 – 2.9GHz range
- Military ATC radars operating within the 2.7-3.1GHz range
- 10MHz guardband to LTE FDD Downlink band

Four issues to be resolved in order to ensure coexistence with LTE2600:

1. Radar rejection of the fundamental signal of the LTE signal
2. LTE spurious emissions into the Radar band
3. LTE rejection of the fundamental signal of Radar
4. Radar spurious emissions into the LTE2600 Band

In order to ensure the continued availability of radar to provide a service

the first two issues need to be resolved otherwise all issues.

Conclusions on the LTE Design requirements

• Do not go for the upper 20MHz block from 2.67-2.69GHz of the 2.6GHz band
• LTE2600 deployment prefered indoor by using of LTE Distributed Antenna Systems at
Airports in general to avoid any impact on the Radar signal as well as on the LTE2600
signal
• In case Macro cellular outdoor deployment is needed the following actions need to be
taken to the Radar rejection of the LTE Signal as well as the LTE rejection of the Radar
signal and spurious emissions:

– Identify which channels in the range of 2.7 to 3.1GHz are used of the Air Traffic Control (ATC) at
the airport and where is the ATC located
– In case of using the upper 20MHz band the LTE2600 eNodeB Emission mask need to be tighter
(-45dBm/MHz) by additional filtering
– Apply a coordination zone of 1km for the Downlink as well as for the Uplink (interference
distance)
– Carefully planning of mast hight and antenna orientation
– Push the Radar operator to improve the preselection performance of the RADAR system on the
receiver side as well as the Spectrum mask on the transmitter side
