Thanks for a fantastic first month of school! With a pancake breakfast, assemblies, field trips, the
Terry Fox Run, and other great things happening at Forest Green School, it took no time getting
right back into the swing of things. We have really appreciated all of the support parents have
given us at school.
As a school community, we have really focused on connecting parents, students, and staff with each
other. All classrooms now have their own blog website, which can be used as a classroom tool to
improve critical thinking, while also communicating openly with parents what is happening in each
classroom. We really want to encourage you to not only read your child’s classroom blog, but to
also comment and let each class know that you are reading it! We really want to encourage open
dialogue in our school and hope that as adults, we can all show our kids how to interact using social
media in a positive forum. Parents are our partners in the school and it is very beneficial if we can
communicate continuously throughout the school year. (I will list all of the classroom blogs within
this newsletter) We will even have a “community” computer in our front foyer in the next month.

You can also follow our Twitter account (yes we have a school Twitter account!) at: http://
twitter.com/fgdragons. This is a quick way for us to let you know what is happening at the school!
With that being said regarding communication, this year Parent-Teacher interviews will be held
prior to report cards on October 12th and 14th at Forest Green School. We are having these inter-
views before report cards so that we can work together as teachers and parents to help students
along before their first formal assessment. The report card should hold no surprises if we are com-
municating effectively before they are sent home. This gives us the opportunity to work together
with our children, to help them continue to build upon their strengths, as well as their areas of
growth. We are looking forward to having you join us on those two nights. A form will be sent
home for booking interviews in the near future.
As we try our best to be open and transparent with our practices, I really encourage you to come
and talk to me about either the positives or negatives of our school. I can never solve a problem
that I do not know exists. Don’t ever hesitate to call or make an appointment to see me!
Thanks so much for your support at the beginning of the school year! We hope that we always
make you feel welcome to our school. I wish you and your child a great year!
Sincerely,
George Couros
Principal, Forest Green/Connections for Learning

How our staff is getting better! Forest Green School Professional Development
(September)
Mr. Usiskin has been working with all staff to help build capacity in the area of technology integration/
critical thinking in the classroom. This program is used for in-class professional development so Mr.
Usiskin can both work with students and teachers at the same time to improve learning.
Mrs. Cameron and Miss Mahan have been training this year with Mrs. Wandio in the area of Balanced
Literacy.
All Forest Green teachers have been working in sessions with Diane Lander from Parkland School Divi-
sion to learn more on how to use Critical Thinking practices more effectively in the classroom.
Mr. Couros has run professional development opportunities for international administrators through the
use of video conferencing technology. This same professional development is happening with other ad-
ministrators in Parkland School Division.
All staff created their blogs with the help of Mr. Usiskin. This project will continuously be developed as the
year continues to help improve student learning outcomes.
Forest Green staff will be starting the second year of their professional development plan this includes
working with all staff from Forest Green, Connections for Learning, and Brightbank Academy. This pro-
fessional development directly focuses on the goals of Technology Integration, Critical Thinking, Special
Education, and Citizenship and Social Responsibility.
Mrs. Wandio attended a Webinar by Jim Knight on Instructional Coaching Sept. 28th, put on by the Ed-
monton Regional Learning Consortium. This Professional Development opportunity helps with the effec-
tive practice of delivering Professional Development to other staff.
