About the Book

"This is the third part (of four) of Abbe Barreul's massive polemi history of the French Revolution. This portion of this book is of interest because it contains extensive quotes from the actual literature of th Bavarian Illuminati. This is the most comprehensive work in English on th historical theory, structure and practice of the Bavarian Illuminati. It co plements Robison's Proofs of a Conspiracy, the other major contemporary

Fou nded in 1776, shortly before the America n Revolution, th Bava ria n Illuminati were a secret society with a revolutionary ideol y, and a centralized structure. According to Abbe Barreul, they sub erted the Masonic lodges of Europe, and were one of the key driving for es behind the French Revolution. New members were gradually initiate into the group's radical ideas, which, according to Barreul, were a heist and ana rch ist in esse nce.

Barreul was very conservative, and his translator, Robert Edwa d Clifford, likewise. However, Barreul was a serious historian, even thoug he wrote from a decidedly non-neutral point of view. As a contempora ,he was able to view the primary source documents and interview parti ipants. As such this book is today, in and of itself, a primary source.

Today, civil society in Europe and America has enshrined ideas of 'Liberty and Equality' that Barreul thought would lead to th complete breakdown of civilization. The Bavarian Illuminati are considere by some to be the forerunners of the Communist and Fascist movements However, as I have stated before, this is probably parallel evolution. The more paranoid believe that the Illuminati (or some equivalent, such a a cabal of reptilian shape-shifters) are still in business and manipulating, .g., world leaders, the education system, and mass movements. But thi is for the ind ivid ua I reader to decide ... "

About the Author

"Abbe Augustin Ba rruel (October 2, 1741 - Octobe r 5, 1820) was a French Jesu it priest. He is now mostly known for docu menting the conspi racy theory involving the Bavarian Illuminati and the Jacobins in his book Memoirs Illustrating the History of Jacobinism (original title Memoires pour servir A I'Histoire du Jacobinisme) published in 1797. In short, Barruel wrote that the French Revolution was planned and executed by the secret societies.

Augustin Barruel was born at Villeneuve de Berg (Ardeche). He entered the Society of Jesus, common Iy known as th e Jesu its in 1756 and ta ught gra mma r at Tou louse in 1762. The storm aga inst the Jesu its in F ra nce drove him from his country and he was occupied in college work in Moravia and Bo hemia until the su ppression of the ord er in 1773. He the n retu rned to France and his first literary work appeared in 1774: Ode sur Ie glorieux avenement de Louis Auguste au trone. That same year he became a collaborator of the Annee litteraire, edited by Freron. His first important work was Les Helveie n nes, ou Lettres Provincia les ph i losoph iq ues, pu blished in 1781."

Code of the Illuminati

PRELIMINARY BSERVATIONS

On the lIIuminees 1 and on the differe t Works whereon these Memoirs are grou ded.

THE third conspiracy, which I a now about to investigate, is that of the Atheistical lIIuminees, whi h at my outset 2 I denominated the conspiracy of the Sophisters 0 Impiety and Anarchy against every religion natural or revealed; not on y against kings, but against every government, against all civil society, e en against all property whatsoever.

The name of Iliuminee which this Sect (the most disastrous in its principles, the most extensive in its views, the m st atrociously cunning in its means) has chosen, is of ancient standing in the annals of disorganizing Sophistry. It was the name which Manes and hi disciples first affected, gloriantur Manichcei se de aelo ittuminatos." The first Rosicrucians also, who appeared in Germany, called themsel es Illuminees. And later, in our time, the Martinists (with many other sects) have pretended to Illuminism. As an outline for history I d istingu ish them by thei r plots a nd tenets, a nd will reduce them into two classes, th Atheistical and the Theosophical Iliu m inees. These latter more pa rti u la rly compre hend the Martinists, whom I have already mentioned in y second volume, and the Swedenbourgians, whom I shall mention in t eir proper place, where also I shall give what information I have been able to collect relating to them. The Atheistical Iliuminees are the objects f the present volume, and it is their conspiracy that I mea n to disclose.

The very numerous letters, books, an manuscripts, which I have received since the publication of my proposals, has rendered it impossible for me to comprise the proposed investigation i one volume. The baleful projects of the Sect and the laws for their execut on are so strangely combined, that I thought it necessary to begin by ma ing my reader perfectly acquainted with its code; that is to say, with th regular progression of its degrees, mysteries, and government.

This al ne requiring an entire volume, I am reduced to the necessity of givmg fourth, in which I shall develope the history of Illuminism, and make an application of the triple conspiracy to the French Revolution. I have m re particularly applied myself to the investigation of the legislative part of his conspiring Sect, as no work has yet been published in which the whole f their code is to be found. Detached parts only were to be met with sc ttered throughout the papers which had been seized by the public a uthori y. These I have co lIected and digested; th us ena bling the reade r more e sily to judge what has been and what must have been the result of such la s. In such an undertaking, I feel myself bound to lay before the public n account of the documents on which I ground my proofs. The followi g then is a list of the principal works, with a few observations on each, t at the reader may form his own judgment as to their authenticity.

I. The first is a collection entitled "Some of the Origina I Writings of the Sect of Illu inees, which were discovered on the 11th and 12th of October, 1786, t La ndsh ut, on a sea rch made in the House of the Sieu r Zwack, hereto re Cou nsellor of the Rege ncy; a nd printed by Orde r of His High ness the Ele tor.-Munich, by Ant. Franz, Printer to the Court." 4

II. The econd is a supplement to the Original Writings, chiefly containing those hich were found on a search made at the castle of Sandersdorf, a famous haunt of the /IIuminees, by orde r of His High ness the Elector. Munich, 1787. 5

These wo volumes contain irrefragable proofs of the most detestable conspir cy. They disclose the principles, the object, and the means of the Sect; t e essential parts of their code, the diligent correspondence of the adepts, pa rticu la rly that of their ch ief, a nd a state ment of their progress and fut re hopes. The editors indeed have carried their attention so far, as to men ion by whose hand the principal documents or letters were written. At the eginning of the first volume, and on the frontispiece of the second, is seen the following remarkable advertisement by order of the Elector:"Those ho may ha rbou r any dou bt as to the a uthe nticity of th is collection, have 0 Iy to apply to the office where the secret archives are kept at M u n ich, and whe re orde rs a re left to show the origi na Is." 6

I entre t that my readers will recollect this advertisement whenever they shall se the Original Writings cited.

III. "The True IIluminee, or the real and perfect Ritual of the IIluminee; of the Iliu inee; comprehending the Preparation, the Noviciate, the Minerval Degree, that of the Minor and Major /IIuminee, all without addition or omissio . "-With respect to the a uthenticity of th is work, we need on Iy quote the testimony of the Ba ron Kn igge, su rna med Philo, the most famous of the II uminees after the Founder of the Sect; and who was actually the chief co piler of its Code, as he tells us himself: "All these degrees (says he), suc as I composed them, have been printed this year at Edesse (Frankfo on the Mein) under the title of the True IIluminee. I am ignorant of the a thor; but they appear exactly as they flowed from my pen; that is to say, s I compiled them." 7 This certainly is an authenticated document on the 5 ct, and recognized by the compiler himself.

proceed to a work which was published by this same Philo, under t e title of "Last Observations, or Last Words of Philo, and Answers to dive r Questio ns 0 n my con nections with the IIlu mi nees." In th is work Philo-Kn gge gives us an account of himself and of his Illuminism, of his agreem nts with the chiefs of the Sect, and of his labours for it. His vanity, howeve , makes this narrative fulsome. The reader will observe in his writings one of those pretended Philosophers who treat all religious objects ith that contempt which they themselves deserve. This is of no consequ nce; he attempts to justify his own conduct; his avowals may therefor be received in testimony against the Sect.

V. "The last Works of Spartacus and Philo," Die neusten Arbeiten des Spartac s und philo. Except the Original Writings, this is the most intelligent an important work that has been published on the IIluminees. It contains the two degrees of the greatest consideration both on account of the mys eries revealed in them by the Sect, and of the laws laid down for the ade tS.-Not a shadow of doubt can be maintained as to the authenticity of th s work. These degrees a nd laws are pu blished with a certificate of philo att sting their conformity with the original, and under the seal of the Order. his certificate was scarcely necessary. Whoever can read must easily p rceive that these degrees and these laws are no other than a compila ion, and often (in the most essential parts) but a copy of the discours s, precepts, and principles, contained in the Original Writings. The publisher is a man who has passed through all the degrees of Illuminism. More d xterous than Philo, he makes himself master of his secret, and of that of he whole Sect. Iliu m inee; a nd he has so we II succeede ,that no membe r of the Orde r was better acquainted with it than himself.

VI. The same writer has published Illuminism, a valuable work, in which letters of the grand adepts.

VII. The Directing lIIuminee, 0 r the Scot h Knight. Th is may be sa id to be the counterpart of the Last Works of philo and Spartacus. It is a description of the most important intermediary degr e of Illuminism. The Editor does not indeed publish it under the signet of he Order; but when the reader has compared it with the Original Writings and even with the criticism on it by the chief, who was not much pleas d with the compiler, he will soon decide that the gra nd sea I of the Orde r is not necessa ry to a uthenticate it.

VIII. Remarkable Depositions respecti g the IIluminees. These are three juridical depositions on oath, and sig ed 1st by Mr. Cosandy, Canon and Professor at Munich; 2dly by Mr. Ren er, Priest and Professor of the same Academy; 3dly by Mr. Utzschneider, unsellor of the Electoral Chamber; 4thly by Mr. George Griimberq, a member of the Academy of Sciences, and Professor of Mathematics. As every thi g is juridical in these depositions, it would be useless for me to insist on th weight they must carry with them. These were four pupils, who did no wait to be initiated in the grand mysteries of the Sect to form their j dgement on, and to quit the Sect. They were cited at a tribunal to decla e all they knew, and they answered with moderation and truth. Their d positions will find a place in the historical part ofthis work.

IX. The Apologies pu blished by some f the leaders of the Sect a re a Iso to be classed a mo ng the incontrovertibl evidence wh ich we have acq u ired. These gentlemen will not be expec ed to have aggravated their own wicked ness.

X. The list would be endless were I to ubjoin all the works that have been written against the Sect. But I must d stinguish in this place the works of Mr. Hoffman, Professor at the University of Vienna. I am but little acquainted with those of Doctor Zimme man, though I have been informed by letter, that he furnished many valu ble articles in a journal published at Vienna, and chiefly directed against th Sect. I often find Mr. Stark's name mentioned as a strenuous opponent 0 the Sect. I have seen no publication

with his name to it, except an Apolo in Answer to the Calumnies of the Sect, which it continues to repeat, no withstanding the victorious manner in which he has answered them.

Among the anonymous writings I find an excellent work entitled the Ultimate fate of the Free-masons ( ndliches schicksal des Frey-maurer Ordens). It is a discourse pronounced at the breaking-up of a Freemason's Lodge. The writer of this discourse ives an excellent statement of the reasons why the Lodges should suspe d their labours since Illuminism had intruded itself into Masonry.-I beli e he would have pronounced this discourse much sooner, had he know that all Lodges were not so pure as his own.

I have also perused the Biographical F agments ofthe Sieur Bode, a famous Iliuminee; these will be very useful in our Historical Volume. As to numberless other works which I hav read on the same subject, it will suffice to give the titles of the m w en quoted. I have sa id more tha n enough to show that I a m not in the da rk with respect to the su bject on which I am writing.

I could wish to express my gratitude 0 those virtuous men who, by their correspondence, and the memorials hich they have sent me, have greatly advanced my undertaking. But open e pressions of such a gratitude would prove fatal to them. To have contribu ed to the public utility is a sufficient rewa rd for the ir virtue; a nd if my wor is not so pe rfect as it ought to be, it arises not from any want of energy in heir endeavours.

I find myself much against my will bliged to answer certain objections which my Translator has made, and hich will, doubtless, be repeated by many other readers, grounded on the work of Mr. Robison, entitled Proof of a Conspiracy against all the Religi ns and Governments of Europe, &c. &c. That work was published just as his Third Volume was going to the press. Its author had not then met ith my two first Volumes; but in a second Edition he is pleased to menti n them in his Appendix. I am much flattered by his approbation, heartily ongratulate him on the zeal he has himself shown in combating the publ c enemy, and am happy to see that he has wrought on the best materials. Without knowing it, we have fought for the same cause with the same ar s, and pursued the same course; but the public are on the eve of seeing our respective quotations, and will observe a remarkable difference bet een them.
