Assignment November 26,2018

1. Title: DEVELOPMENT OF AN ELECTRICALLY OPERATED CASSAVA

SLICING MACHINE
Author: Aji I. S*., James E., Ejovwoke A. and Mshelia D. A.
Keyword: Slicing
Keyword Meaning:

Slicing is cutting cassava tubers or agricultural materials to obtain the

length greater than other section of cut. Slicing machine is workable and
efficient, which can be adopted to reduce labor input in cassava chips
processing and improve product quality. This work is targeted at the design,
construction and evaluation of the performance of an electrically operated
cassava-slicing machine.

2. Title: DEVELOPMENT OF AN ELECTRICALLY OPERATED CASSAVA

PEELING AND SLICING MACHINE
Author: I. S. Aji*, M.U. Emmanuel, S. A. Abdulrahman and O. F. Franklyn
Keyword: Cassava Peeling
Keyword Meaning:

Tuber crops such as yam, cassava and potatoes are usually utilized
after peeling (removal of the cortex). Cassava (Manihot esculenta crantz) is the
most perishable of the root and tubers crops and to avoid wastage due to
spoilage, there is a need to peel and dry the tuber” and for cassava to be
effectively dried, there is a need to also slice the peel tuber into smaller pieces
(chips). It is reported that about 75% of the total processing time for cassava
is utilized in the peeling process (Adetan et al., 2005). Traditionally, peeling is
done manually with a knife or blade held firmly or table mounted, however,
there are other ways of peeling cassava such as using chemical or mechanical
(machine) methods respectively. Processing of cassava largely depends on
peeling and slicing, among other operations such as washing, grating,
pulverizing, dewatering, sieving, pelletizing and drying. Traditionally, most of
these operations are done manually which is labour intensive, arduous in
nature, time consuming and unsuitable for large scale production.
Mechanization of cassava processing/operations requires the development of
equipment such as peelers, graters, chippers or slicers, aimed at reducing
labour for processors, increase production and income for cassava farmers and
enhance production of a more hygienically processed cassava.
3. Title: DEVELOPMENT OF CASSAVA (MANIHOT) CHIPPPING MACHINE
USING ELECTRIC MOTOR CUM MANUAL OPERATION
Author: J.O Awulu*, J. Audu and Y.M. Jibril
Keyword: Electric Motor
Keyword Meanning:

An electric motor cum manually operated cassava (Manihot Esculanta

Crants) chipping machine was developed and its performance evaluated. The
purpose is to increase the surface area which aid in quick drying of cassava
chips. Local material were used for the fabrication. This machine consist
majorly of a hopper, chipping blades, transmission shaft, collecting box, electric
motor, a handle and frame. The machine was evaluated using 300-400 rpm
speeds.

4. Title: Design and Performance Evaluation of a Cassava Chipping Machine

Author: Agulanna C.N, Oriaku E.C, Nwannewuihe H.U, Onwukwe M.C, and
Adiele I.D
Keyword: Chipping
Keyword Meaning:

The developed cassava chipping machine was evaluated by varying the

weights of sample fed into it and observations made. The average feed time
was 0.87mins (52 seconds) while the average chipping time was 0.91mins (55
seconds). The average feed rate was also observed to be 7.74kg/min
(464.4kg/hr) with average chipping rate of 7.36 kg/min (441.71 kg/hr). A mean
loss of 4.88% of total sample was also observed. Chipping efficiency was an
average of 96.81%. This is far more than can be achieved by manual
processing and is expected to aid processing of cassava in rural communities
given that it is not dependent on electricity. Chipped cassava is also easier to
dry and store for further processing.

The processing of cassava tubers for industrial or human use involves

different operations of which chipping is an important one when exports are
considered.

5. Title: Design of a Dual Operated Cassava Chipper

Author: M. G.Yisa1, A. Fadeyibi2*, K.P. Alabi3
Keyword: Cottage
Keyword Meaning:

Despite the numerous success stories about the already existing

cassava chipping machines, their application especially at the small scale is a
huge challenge. Besides, the machines are cumbersome and some required
high technology and degree of literacy to operate, thus limiting their overall
acceptability by the local farmers. There is therefore the need for an alternative
design that can accommodate and address these deficiencies to increase
productivity of the product. Information on the design and fabrication of the new
machine has not been reported in the open literature. Thus, the objective of
this study was to design and fabricate a manually operated and motorised
cassava chipping machine for increasing the productivity of the chipping
process at the cottage level.

Size reduction of agricultural products is an essential requirement for

their processing and transportation. This research designed and fabricated a
manually operated and motorised cassava chipping machine, which is
adaptable to the local farmers at the cottage level.
