EXPERIMENT NO. 5
“SIEVE ANALYSIS AGGREGATES”

I. DISCUSSION

Sieve Test is performed to evaluate grading and to gain information regarding the particle
size distribution of fine to coarse aggregates. The aggregates graduation influences the
workability of concrete mixes because it affects the water-cement ratio and the paste-aggregate
ratio.

Well-graded coarse aggregates will need less quantity of fine aggregates and cement since
there would be less surface area to be enveloped by the cement paste. Likewise, well-graded
fine aggregates will enhance the workability and the finishing quality of concrete. Therefore, the
control of grading aggregates for use in concrete mixes is important to ensure quality of
concrete.

Fineness modulus (F.M) is used as index to determine the fineness and coarseness of
aggregates.

III.TEST PROCEDURE

1. Reduce the field sample to a test sample size by means of quartering.

2. Dry the sample to constant weight at a temperature of 100 5 degrees.
3. Weigh the test sample accordingly to the criteria below.

A. FINE AGGREGATES
o Aggregates with at least 95% passing a 2.36mm (no. 8) sieve --100g
o Aggregates with at least 85% passing a 4.75mm (no. 4) sieve --500g

B. COARSE AGGREGATES

Nominal Maximum Size, mm Minimum Weight of Test Sample

9.5 1
12.5 2
19.0 5
25.0 10
37.5 15
50.0 20

4. Nest the sieves in order of decreasing sizes of opening from top to bottom.

A. Sieves for fine aggregates- 10.5, 2.5, 1.2, 0.6, 0.3, 0.15 pan.
B. Sieves for coarse aggregates- 38.1, 25.4, 19.1, 15.9, 9.52, 4.76, 2.38 pan.

5. Place the sample on top of the sieve.

6. Agitate the sieve by hand or by mechanical sieving machine in for a sufficient period.
7. Check if sieving is already sufficient by the criteria used in the test for fineness of cement by
sieve.
8. Get the weight of the sample retained in each sieve.
9. Perform the necessary calculation.
