Success Stories
Name: Balgovind Sahoo
Village: Vanaguttu, Basia, Gumla, Jharkhand
Education: 9th | Sector: Construction | Trade: Mason

Balgovind used to work on his small farm land which had a


production of around 2 quintals per annum. He was married
with three kids and found it difficult to sustain a living with
only farming. He had to do sundry labour to add to his
income. However, salary from labour was irregular which
added to his woes.

After successfully completing the rigorous training at Gumla


Gurukul, he joined Shapoorji Pallonji as a Mason. He
persevered at his job and within 3 years was promoted to
the position of Supervisor. He is handling 40 – 60 masons at
his work site and earning about Rs 14,000 per month.

With the savings from his job, he added two more rooms to
his existing house thereby providing a comfortable stay for
his family.

Name: Manoj Oraon
Village: Chetar, Gumla, Jharkhand
Education: 10th | Sector: Construction | Trade: Bar Bending

Manoj’s parents passed away while he was in school and he


was forced to help his brother in farming and had to work as
contractual labour. His income was unstable and insufficient.
He was in the 1st batch of trainees at Gumla. He was placed
as a Bar Bender at Shapoorji’s TCS Bhubaneswar site.

Within a few months into his job, he was promoted as


Leader of his Bar Bender group. He continued working with
sincerity and after 3 years was again promoted to the role of
Supervisor where he now handles 40 Bar Benders. His salary
too has more than doubled from Rs. 7,000 per month to Rs.
14,000 per month.

Now Manoj is married and encouraged his wife to study


further, who is now pursuing her graduation.
