LESSON PLAN

School:………………………………….

Teacher : …………………………….

Grade: 9th Form

Students’ Level: Intermediate

No. of students: 30

Time: 50 minutes

Date:

Title of the activity: “What is Love?”

Skills covered: All skills

Aims :

- to express personal opinions about the topic and identify different types of attitudes towards love;

- to practise reading, error-correction and creative translation skills;

- to express agreement/disagreement and giving arguments /examples to support personal views;

Anticipated problems:

- some students may not understand some words;

- some students may need extra-explanations and help;

Aids: projector, handouts, presentation, blackboard.

Procedure :

1. Warm up - to create expectations about the topic, prepare and introduce the students into the atmosphere of the lesson: the teacher
informs the students that they are going to have a lesson about a secret … topic and they will have to guess it. Then the Ss are given
some hints until they guess the topic: the lesson is going to be about “something which gives you butterflies in your stomach / a strong
feeling of deep affection for someone or something/ an affectionate or tender devotion to a person or thing” etc.

The T writes the title of the lesson , “Love”, on the blackboard, then draws a spidergram and asks the Ss to give examples of persons or
things for which we can feel or show love. The T completes the spidergram with the students’ answers: e.g. love for…a pet/ a family
member/ a teacher/ music/ a celebrity/ chocolate/ the internet/ computer games etc and asks them to name different ways in which they
can show what they feel for each of the persons they have just mentioned. For example…how do they show their love for their mothers?
Interaction: T>S; Timing : 8 mins

2. Individual work: “What do you think about being in love? “ – to practise giving opinions

The T tells the Ss that even if we all watch romantic movies and listen to songs about love, about being in love, each of us has a personal
point of view about being in love and an individual perception of love. The Ss are asked to work individually and complete the definition
“Being in love…” with their own personal points of view. Then the T collects and reads the students’ definitions and concludes that, in
general terms, there are three main attitudes to love: romantic, cynical and realistic. The T explains the meanings of the three words:

1
cynical - someone who believes that people are motivated only by selfish reasons, they don’t care if they hurt others with their actions
etc

romantic - a very imaginative and emotional person

realistic -someone who sees things as they are in real life, who is sensible and appropriate.

Interaction: T>S; S>S; Timing : 10 mins

3. Group work: Reading Comprehension and discussion: “Battlefield or bed of roses?”

The Ss receive a copy of the handout “Battlefield or bed of roses?” and are asked to read the 16 statements silently, inside each group,
and write which category – cynical, romantic or realistic- each of the 16 definitions belongs to. Then, each statement is read aloud, the
students compare their results, notice and discuss the differences. The T gives explanations and feedback if necessary.

Interaction: T>S; S>S; Timing : 15 mins

4. Pair work: “Love is…” (a set of English quotations) - to practise error correction, translating, agreeing /disagreeing and giving
reasons:

The T provides the Ss with a list of ten quotations about love and asks them to correct 5 of them which contain a mistake, then to
translate all the quotations into Romanian, making all the necessary adaptations. Then, working in pairs, the Ss are expected to express
agreement or disagreement about one of the 10 quotations and give arguments and examples to support their points of view.
