ACADEMIC ASSESSMENT

Johnson & Wales University requires all new students to participate in an Academic Assessment in the areas
of math, reading comprehension and sentence skills. The results of all assessment activities will help
generate an appropriate class schedule based on individual student skill levels and abilities.

Students should have completed the Academic Assessment while at New Student Orientation over the
summer. Students unable to complete the Academic Assessment over the summer will be referred for testing
upon arrival at Term Start.

 Academic Assessment MUST be taken prior to beginning Term Start 

 Visit the following website for assessment preparation materials:

HEALTH SERVICES

As a prerequisite for beginning classes, Johnson & Wales University and the North Carolina Department of
Health require that all new, fulltime students (residents and commuters) submit documented proof of:

 A physical exam within the last year

(examination forms online at www.jwu.edu/charlotte > Student Life > Health & Counseling), with a
physician's signature and parent/guardian signature for students under 18).
 3 tetanus-diphtheria vaccines (DTP/DTaP/Td) with one Td booster dose within the last 10 years
(required).
 Negative PPD/CXR Tuberculosis test or chest x-ray within the last 6 months (only required for those
students born outside the USA).
 2 MMRs: measles, mumps, rubella vaccine (required).
 Hepatitis B series and Chicken Pox Vaccine (required).
 Meningitis vaccine and Hepatitis A vaccine (strongly recommended *).

*IMPORTANT NOTE:
"Recent studies show that certain college students, particularly freshmen living in dormitories, have a sixfold
increased risk for meningitis... Cases of meningitis among teens and young adults 15-24 years of age — the
age of most college students — have more than doubled since 1991...A vaccine is available against four
strains of the bacteria that cause meningococcal meningitis in the United States."
(source: American College Health Association)

Failure to meet any of these requirements will result in a Health Services hold being placed on your account.
A hold prohibits you from registering/reinstating at the university. In addition, since you would no longer be
an active student attending the university on a full-time basis, you would not be eligible to reside on campus
and would lose your housing assignment. All documents must be submitted to Health Services before a hold
will be removed.

Visit www.jwu.edu/charlotte > Student Life > Health & Counseling

for more information. You can also call Health & Counseling Services at 980-598-1700.

STUDENT IDENTIFICATION CARDS

Official university student identification (ID) cards are issued to all enrolled students and must be carried at
all times. Students must present their ID cards upon request to authorized university representatives. It
enables students to attend university-sponsored events, gain access to residence halls, Library, computer labs,
and receive meals in the Student Dining Center.

A student ID card is required for admittance to the Library and at the Bookstore to obtain uniforms, to use a
MasterCard, Visa and/or American Express or to sell back textbooks. The Division of Student Affairs and
Student Academic & Financial Services will also request that students present their ID cards when
purchasing tickets, attending performances or conducting any financial or academic business.

An ID card is solely for the use of the person to whom the card is issued. It is strictly prohibited for students
to use each other’s cards. This type of behavior will result in disciplinary action.

If an ID card is lost, stolen, damaged, or malfunctioning, students must follow the procedures below:

 Report the lost or stolen card as soon as possible to Campus Safety & Security. You will then be able
to pay the $15 replacement fee and receive a new ID card.
 Present the damaged card (i.e. bent, cracked, etc) to Campus Safety & Security. You will then be
able to pay the $15 replacement fee and receive a new ID card.
 Present the malfunctioning card to Campus Safety & Security so that they might assess and correct
the problem.

RECEIVING YOUR ID CARD:

You should have had your photo taken and received your student ID card over the summer at New Student
Orientation. If you do not attend New Student Orientation, you will have your photo taken and receive your
student ID card during Term Start.

RESIDENTIAL LIFE

All students planning to live on campus must have paid the Admissions Enrollment Deposit and
completed their online housing application for Residential Life. Send in your deposit as soon as you receive
the Accepted Student Guide and complete your housing application online. Any student whose contract
and/or deposit has not been received will be assigned available space on a “first-come, first-served” basis. It
is important to note housing is extremely limited at term start and cannot be guaranteed. Residential Life and
housing policies are explained in detail in the JWU Charlotte Student Handbook, which is available by
visiting www.jwu.edu/charlotte > Student Life > Student Handbook

RESIDENTIAL LIFE REQUIREMENTS:

 Binding Housing Contract: Regardless of the financial payment you select, housing contracts are
effective upon signing and binding for the entire academic year. As long as you are attending the
university, you remain responsible for room and board charges for the entire academic year, even if
you no longer occupy your assigned room or utilize the dining facilities. Students with disabilities
who need special accommodations are advised to contact the Center for Academic Support, 980-598-
1500, prior to applying for housing online.

 Good Standing: Your housing assignment is contingent upon you being in good standing with
Johnson & Wales University. If you have a financial hold on your account at end of business
on August 12, you will forfeit your housing assignment. Once the financial hold is removed, you will
be reassigned to any available space at Term Start. Again, it is important to note housing is
extremely limited and is assigned on a "first-come, first-served" basis and cannot be guaranteed at
Term Start.

 Room Assignments: Students select their own assignment online – ability to access the online
system is based on deposit dates and lottery; earlier deposits are more likely to secure preferred
housing assignments. Additionally, a limited number of larger rooms may be tripled in the event that
building occupancy has been reached.

 Insurance: We strongly urge you to obtain personal property insurance coverage under your
own/your parents’/your guardians’ homeowner’s insurance. Johnson & Wales University is not
responsible for damages to or loss of your private property. You will receive an insurance pamphlet
upon moving into your assigned building.

 Move-In Deadline: Any student who does not occupy their assigned room by the last day of
Term Start will forfeit that specific housing assignment unless a written request providing sufficient
cause for late Move-In has been previously submitted to and approved by the Director of Residential
Life. Students who arrive after the Move-In deadline will be placed in any available space.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
You must complete the Term Start process before reporting to your residence hall.

(continued)

HOUSING MOVE-IN PROCEDURE:

 Report to Term Start where Residential Life will confirm your housing assignment
 Using the directions provided at Term Start, drive to your residence hall
 NOTE: Unloading and parking at the residence halls is extremely limited due to construction of
the new Student Center. It is important to follow the specific instructions provided to you by
Residential Life at Term Start. Move-in assistance will be provided in an effort to reduce
parking/unloading congestion.
 Park your car in the assigned parking lot, and return to the hall to begin unpacking

SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS:

 Cedar Hall North and Cedar Hall South close for the Winter Holiday Break on Friday, December 17,
2010 at noon through Sunday, January 2, 2011 at noon. All residence hall students who will require
housing during the 2010-2011 holiday break must arrange for their own accommodations. City View
Towers will remain open during the Winter Holiday Break.
 All buildings are open during shorter breaks in the fall and spring. However, the Student Dining
Center will be closed.
 Students will need to vacate Cedar Hall North, Cedar Hall South and City View Towers within 24
hours of their last exam or by Friday, May 20 at noon at the closing of the academic year. This is
mentioned to provide sufficient information for planning purposes.

HOUSING REQUIREMENTS:

 JWU Charlotte has a two year residency requirement for all new freshmen students. Housing is
extremely limited and cannot be guaranteed for transfer students or rising juniors and seniors. All
first year students are required to live on campus in either Cedar Hall North or Cedar Hall South.
Second-year students are required to live on campus as well and can fulfill this requirement in Cedar
Hall North, Cedar Hall South or City View Towers.
 Students who are married, single parents, live with an adult relative within a 50-mile radius of
campus, are transfer or international students or are 21 or over are exempt from the two-year
residency requirement. Students must apply for a housing exemption by visiting the Residential Life
website and completing and submitting the Housing Exemption & Contract Release Form.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SERVICES

Please see the “Information Technology Services” handout provided to you at New Student Orientation over
the summer for detailed information and instructions regarding your JWU e-mail account, computer labs,
print release stations, network storage, telecommunications, the on-campus network (ResNet), cable
television, policies and technical support. You may also access it online at www.jwu.edu/charlotte/its > ITS
New Student Information

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING BRINGING A COMPUTER ON CAMPUS:

As time gets closer to your arrival on campus, the Department of Information Technology Services would
like to bring to your attention important information about connecting your computer to the university
network via a wired (like in a residence hall room) and/or wireless (like in wi-fi hotspots located throughout
campus) connections. JWU utilizes a network authentication and validation security system called Cisco
Network Admission Control (NAC). Vulnerable computers are isolated and given extremely reduced
network access until they are patched and secured. This prevents those computers from being the targets of
or the sources for worm and virus infections. This ensures a safe, secure and reliable network for you. The
NAC Agent must be installed on your computer to gain full access to the university network including
access to the Internet.

To make your computing transition to the university as smooth as possible, there are steps you should
complete BEFORE YOU ARRIVE ON CAMPUS. If you have a computer with a Windows Operating
system, these steps include ensuring that your computer has the latest Microsoft Windows Updates installed,
Windows Automatic Updates turned on, a valid and non-expired version of anti-virus software installed and
the latest anti-virus software definitions installed. If you have a Macintosh or Linux system, please make sure
you have a valid and non-expired version of anti-virus software installed and the latest anti-virus software
definition installed.

The University Help Desk has a page which details how to appropriately prepare your computer:
http://helpdesk.jwu.edu/nac

To login:
Username: reshall
Password: protect

Important items to note:

1. The university only supports computers with the following operating systems: Microsoft Windows
2000, Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows 7, Linux and Mac OS
version 9 and up. The following operating systems are not supported: Windows 95, Windows 98,
Windows ME, Windows NT Server and Windows NT Workstation.
2. In order to utilize the on campus network, you must be using a non-beta version of Internet Explorer.
Follow the instructions on the web page to check your version and uninstall if necessary.

(continued)

3. If you choose to utilize the university’s free McAfee anti-virus software, you can only have ONE
anti-virus program installed. Two anti-virus programs will NOT work properly together.
If you have one active anti-virus program installed, you do not need to install another program.
4. Complete these steps as close to your arrival on campus as possible to ensure that you have
downloaded and updated your computer with the latest Windows updates and the latest anti-virus
software definitions. If new updates are released between your last computer update and your arrival
on campus, you will be required to complete additional downloads before you are granted access to
the network.
