Assessment Report on Post ECPTs at ESS

1 Introduction
1.1 General
Indian Institute of Technology Patna (IIT Patna) is expanding the infrastructure with the
construction of academic and residential buildings under Phase II at IIT Patna in Bihta, Bihar.
As a part of expansion, 14 nos. of structures are proposed (Ground Floor to G+8 storeyed
buildings) on open / pile foundations. M/s NCC is the main contractor for this project and
CPWD Patna is the project management (execution agency) for IIT Patna. In this regard, M/s
NCC approached Keller Ground Engineering India Pvt Ltd (Keller) to design and execute the
Ground Improvement works using Vibro Compaction technique to mitigate liquefaction below
the proposed foundation systems.
As a part of scope of work, Keller carried out Vibro Compaction (VC) at proposed Electric
Sub Station (ESS) which is one of the proposed structures.
This document summarises the Post Electric Cone Penetration Tests (ECPTs) conducted at
ESS, liquefaction assessment with bearing capacity and settlement after improvement.

1.2 Project Performance Criteria

Performance criteria of proposed structures is given below:
 Liquefaction : FOS>1.0
o Seismic Zone : IV
o Earthquake Magnitude : 6.5
o PGA : 0.24g

2 ESS Details
The proposed ESS consists of 1 block with ground floor. VC was carried out in a triangular
grid pattern of 3.00m c/c spacing according to drawing, KE/187/930/11/DWG/016 rev 1
“Layout of Vibro Compaction Works at ESS Building” which is appended in Annexure I.
Building details, received via mail dated 28.11.2018, and treatment details are given in Table
1 and layout in Figure 1.

Figure 1 Layout of VC Points and ECPTs

3 Post ECPTs
A total of two Post ECPTs was conducted in ESS as shown in Figure 1 with location
coordinates in Table 2. Improvement in qc is seen throughout the depth of exploration for all
units. However, some layers of small thickness (<0.2m) are showing lower than Pre ECPTs
which can be attributed to higher fines at that depth. Field records of Pre and Post ECPTs
are appended in Annexure II.
Table 2 Location Coordinates of Post ECPTs

Location Coordinates
S No ECPT No RL (m)
Easting Northing

1 Post ECPT 26 283819.776 2825890.092 +59.430

2 Post ECPT 26A 283835.634 2825873.101 +59.370

4 Liquefaction Analysis
Liquefaction analysis is carried out based on the Post ECPTs conducted in the treatment
area and satisfies the performance requirement mentioned in Section 1.2. As per Pre ECPT
26, top 1.5m is having higher fines fraction. These layers are not susceptible to liquefaction.
Liquefaction analysis is appended in Annexure III.

5 Estimated Bearing Capacity

The estimated bearing capacity for different square footing sizes of 1.5m, 2.0m, 2.5m and
3.0m are carried out as per Post ECPT 26A. Foundation level has been kept at 2m below
EGL, fixed as per Pre ECPT 26, at RL +57.800m. Stress bulb for footing is taken as 1.5
times the width of footing. The average cone penetration resistance at every 1m interval is
determined. For this cone resistance, equivalent SPT N value is determined by taking ratio of

2
Assessment Report on Post ECPTs at ESS

cone resistance to SPT N value as 450. The Factor of Safety is taken as 2.5. Summary of
the same is given in Table 3. Detailed calculations are appended in Annexure IV.
Table 3 Estimated Bearing Capacity of VC Treated Soil

2.0m x 2.0m 30.0

ESS Building
2.5m x 2.5m 34.0

3.0m x 3.0m 35.9

6 Estimated Settlement
Settlement calculations are carried out as per IS 8009: Part I: 1976 reaffirmed 1998.
Calculations are done for estimated bearing capacity for isolated footings. Summary of the
same is given in Table 4 and detailed calculations with assumptions in Annexure V.
Table 4 Estimated Settlement of VC Treated Soil

Building Footing Size Estimated Settlement (mm)

1.5m x 1.5m 6.8

2.0m x 2.0m 9.6

2.5m x 2.5m 12.7

3.0m x 3.0m 16.0

The above bearing capacities and settlements are estimated for assumed isolated footing
sizes based on Post ECPTs carried out at site. However, the footing sizes and settlements
shall be recommended by the project geotechnical consultant based on their interpretations
and structural tolerance limits in ultimate and serviceable limit state.
