CHEMISTRY (Paper — I) (6 Units)
Physical Chemistry (CH - 311)
Duration : 2 Hours Total Marks : 80
Instructions : i) Answer to the two Sections should be written in separate
answer books.
ii) Figures to the right indicate full marks.
iii) Use of non-programmable calculator is allowed.
iv) Log tables will be supplied on request.
v) All questions are compulsory, however internal choice is
available.

1. Answer any four from the following questions : (4x4)
i) Derive de Broglie’s equation. Is the wavelength in this equation of any physical
significance for large bodies ?
ii) What is an operator ? Explain Hamiltonian operator.
iil) Explain physical interpretation of wave function.
iv) Write an account of single electrode potential.
v) List four similarities between liquid drop and nucleus.
vi) Explain shape of CS, and H,O on the basis of dipole moment.

constant . If half life of Ra””° is 1450 years, starting with two grams, how
much will remain after 5800 years ? 4

what is the probability of finding the particle at the centre of box ? 2
iv) Write the importance of binding energy curve. Calculate average binding
energy per nucleon for, Si if itsbinding energy is 236.51 MeV, 4B) What do you understand by standard oxidation potential ? An alkali metal has
standard oxidation potential + 3.045, will it be able to decompose water to form
H, gas ? Why ?

SECTION ~ IT 40 Marks
. Answer any four of the following :
i) Derive an expression for electrolyte concentration cell without transference
reversible to anion.
ii) What are rotational spectra ? Derive the equation for the frequency of lines in
the rotational spectrum of a diatomic molecule.
iii) What is multiplicative ion collection ? Give three points'of difference between
GM. counter and proportional counter.
iv) The e.mf. of an electrolyte concentration cell with transference reversible to
cations at 25°C is 0.0445 Volts. If the electrolyte used is AgNO,, determine the
transport number of the ions. Given m, = 0.02, m, = 0.1, 7; = 0.65, and
2 = 0.73.
v) Show that for a rigid diatomic rotor the moment of Joertin iz given by I= ur’.
vi) With a neat labeled diagram explain the instrumentation of GM. counter.

show how it can be eliminated.

A) How is the ionic product of water determined by using the e.m.f. measurements ?
B) Explain illustratively the principle, instrumentation and the working of scintillation
counter.
