of repairing the laptop motherboard, we'll see in this article two components: the
fuse and the diode, we'll discuss their functions and their failures and how to test
them.
The fuse:
The fuse is a safety component, it protects the circuit from overcurrent, it's made
of a material that melts when too much current flows through it thereby making
an open circuit and stopping the current from flowing to the circuit and damages
other components.
Circuit symbol:
The symbol below is used to represent a fuse in a schematic:
Set the multimeter to continuity test mode then put each probe in one terminal of
the fuse, it doesn't matter the position, it you can hear a beep that means the fuse
is ok, if you don't hear a beep the fuse is shorted or cut.
Set the multimeter to resistance mode, and choose the lowest range.
Diode :
A diode is a two terminal electronic component used control the current flow by
blocking it in one direction (the reverse direction) and allow it in the other one
Circuit Symbol :
A diode has two terminals that are polarized, the positive terminal is called the
anode and the negative one is called the cathode, current can only flow from the
anode to the cathode (from + to -), the circuit symbol of a diode is:
Characteristics of a diode:
There are some points to take into consideration when working with a diode:
- The diode doesn’t let the current flow in the forward direction until the voltage
reaches 0.3 V for germanium diodes and 0.7 V for silicon diodes, this voltage is
called theForward bias Voltage and it is consumed by the diode, meaning the
voltage will drop by the Forward bias voltage, example: if the voltage from a
battery is 3V, it will be 2.7V after a germanium diode and 2.3V after silicon diode.
- The diode blocks the current until a certain voltage called The breakdown
Voltage, after that the current will flow in the reverse direction.
A LED is a special diode that emits light when conducting current, it has the same
characteristics like the normal diode, it allows the current to flow in one direction
and blocks it in the other one, it has a forward bias voltage which is greater than
the forward bias voltage of normal diode (from 1.2V to 3V depending on the light
Diodes Failure:
When the diode is short-circuited it acts like a wire allowing the current to flow in
both directions, and when it is open-circuited or cut it acts like and open circuit
You can test a diode using a multimeter and set it to diode test mode, in this mode
the multimeter will apply a small voltage across the diode terminal and then test
Note: sometimes it is necessary to remove the diode from the circuit to test it.
Connect the multimeter probes across the diode and note the reading.
Readings analysis:
- A good diode should read about 0.7V for silicon diodes and 0.3V for germanium
it is reverse-biased (not allowing the current to flow or acting like an open switch).
- If the diode is short-circuited to shorted it will read about 0.7V for silicon diodes
You can also use a multimeter that doesn’t have diode test mode to test a diode
Put the red probe onto the anode (positive terminal of the diode) and the black
probe on the cathode (negative terminal of the diode) and note the reading.
This way the diode is forward-biased and it should read from 1000 Ohm to 10 M
Ohm if the diode is good, and it reads a very low resistance if it is shorted and 1
or OL if it is cut.
Reverse the probes now so that the black probe onto the anode (positive terminal
of the diode) and the red probe on the cathode (negative terminal of the diode)
This way the diode is reverse-biased and should read 1 or OL, if it is shorted it
components that are transistors and MOSFETs that are present nearnlly in any
electronic circuits, we'll see what they are and how they work in a simplified way
Transistor :
The transistor is among the most important electronic components, it’s present
almost in every modern electronic circuit, I’ll try in this article to give you the
important things to know about the transistor and avoid as much as possible the
Types of transistors:
Although many different types of transistors exist, the two most common types
to it.
NPN transistors:
PNP transistors:
field effect transistors (FET) have become much more popular than bipolar
transistors for use in integrated circuits, FETs have three terminals one is known
as the source, the other is called the drain, and the control mechanism is called
the gate. By applying a voltage to the gate, you control the flow of current from
the source to the drain. Some FETs have a fourth lead, grounding part of the FET
FETs) and JFETs (junction FETs). Which is which depends on exactly how the gate
The main difference between bipolar transistors and field effect transistors is that
FETs consume less power than the BJTs and they are less sensitive to the heat,
As we mentioned earlier the transistor is made of three layers : base, emitter and
collector, the base is between the two and without any voltage applied to it acts
like an insulator and preventing any current to flow from collector to emitter, but
when a voltage is applied to the base a small current flow from the base allowing
a large amount of current (about 100 times the base current) to flow from the
The current that flows from the base has a limit and when it’s reached the
transistor is saturated, no matter how much voltage applied to the collector the
same current will always flow to the emitter, of course there is a limit to the voltage
When the current of the base is between more than 0 and less than the maximum
base, you can open the valve to allow water to flow but there is a limit to the valve
The answer to this question is simple: because a transistor doesn’t need any
intervention unlike a switch and secondly the transistor is very much faster than a
switch and thirdly a transistor is very small and can even be microscopic.
- Connect the probes between the base and the emitter and note the reading.
- Connect the probes between the emitter and the base and note the reading.
- Connect the probes between the base and the collector and note the reading.
- Connect the probes between the collector and the base and note the reading.
- Connect the probes between the emitter and the collector and note the reading.
- Connect the probes between the collector and the emitter and note the reading.
Each pair should have one side with very high resistance (>1MΩ), and the other
If this is the case for all the transistor leads, the transistor is good. If not, the
transistor is defective.
MOSFETs are slightly different from BJTs in that there are two types :
Depletion-mode MOSFET :
gate bias voltage, there are two types of depletion-mode MOSFETs : n-channel

Basic electronic components for motherboard maintenance part 4
Basic electronic components for motherboard maintenance part 4:
Always with the basic electronic components that you must know in order to do
laptop or desktop motherboard repair, and this time we'll see a black box
component that you will see in ALL of the motherboards that you'll deal with, it's
the famous Integrated circuit or IC for short.
The pins in an IC are numbered anticlockwise and pin 1 is marked with a dot :
555 Timer:
The 555 timer is a 8-pin chip invented in 1971 and is still one of the most ICs in
use, as its name suggests it's an IC used as a timer, the timer impulses are
controlled by external resistor and capacitor network, by choosing the right ones
you can get the timing interval you'd like.
There is another popular IC called 552 timer which is two 555 timers put together
in a single package of 14 pins.
The function of an operational amplifier is to take a small input signal and amplifies
it to a stronger signal.
The LM324 consists of 4 separate op-amp in a single 14-pin IC, it was introduced
in 1972.
The XX in the 78 voltage regulator represent the output voltage of the IC, for
example 7805 produces a 5V output.
The difference between the input and output voltages can vary from a couple of
volts to 35V.
Before jumping to the conclusion of a failed IC you should first make sure that all
the conditions necessary for the IC to function properly are met.
- To test the power read in the datasheet the voltage needed for the IC then
determine which pin is the power pin and then use a multimeter and set it to
voltage, in case of laptop motherboard some ICs need 5V and others 3.3V, put the
black probe (the negative) on a screwdriver hole which is the ground of the
motherboard, and the red probe on the corresponding pin then read the voltage,
it should be like in the datasheet, if not your problem is not the IC (at least for
now), but if you get the correct voltage process to test the other things.
- Always from the datasheet test the voltages in all the IC's input pins then output
pins and compare them to those in the datasheet if you don't they don't fit or they
are absent you have a problem with the IC.

Basic motherboard repair notions
Basic motherboard repair notions
We'll discuss in this article some important notions that you need to know in order
to deal with the laptop motherboard especially while reading and understanding
the schematic diagram.
We'll explain the principal Integrated Circuits that we find in any laptop
motherboard, then we'll see the different states of a laptop motherboard explaining
each one and we'll finish by discussing the laptop motherboard voltages.
1- Motherboard Principal Integrated circuits:
Even though there are many ICs in the laptop motherboard but the most important
and the ones you find in any motherboard are the following:
- The CPU:
The CPU or the processor is the most important Integrated circuit in the
motherboard, it's responsible of executing instructions stored in the central
memory for more in formation about the CPU visit this article.
- GMCH ( Graphics Memory Control Hub ):
This IC is responsible of managing the RAM and the graphics, it reads information
from the RAM and writes to it, gets its characteristics ..etc,
it is the intermediary between the RAM and CPU.
It process the graphic information as well and sends it to the monitor.
- MCH ( Memory Control Hub ) North Bridge:
This IC is responsible of managing the RAM and the graphics, it reads information
from the RAM and writes to it, gets its characteristics ..etc,
it is the intermediary between the RAM and CPU.
- Note that if the motherboard can have either GMCH or MCH and not both.
-Note again that if the motherboard has MCH it should contain and external graphic
controller.
- ICH ( Integrated Control Hub ) South Bridge:
This IC is usually responsible of managing the audio and the hard disk and the USB
ports and many more.
- I/O Controller:
The input / output controller is responsible as its name mentions, of managing the
input / output operation, it also plays a crucial role during the boot process which
we'll see later on this training.
- The Clock Generator:
The clock generator is responsible of generating impulses to all ICs in the
motherboard in order to synchronize them.
- Note that to be sure of the exact function of any IC in the motherboard including
the principle ICs mentioned here you have to consult the schematic diagram.
- Note that there is no role as to find those exact ICs in a motherboard, you can
for instance come across a motherboard where the CPU and GMCH are one big IC.
2- The motherboard power states:
Those are the states of the laptop depending on the power consumption of the
motherboard, you already know two states: when the laptop is on and when the
laptop is off.
The motherboard states are referred to with Sx where is is a number between 0
and 5:
S0 : Working, the system is fully usable, all the components have their
voltage.
S1, S2, S3: Sleep, The laptop appears to be off, the laptop consumes less
power than in S0 state, the RAM has its voltage, and kept refreshed, to wake
the laptop you need only to press a key on the keyboard or move the mouse.
S4 : Hibernate, the system appears to be off, and the power consumption
is reduced to the lowest level, an image of the RAM is kept on disk because the
ram loses its voltages, to wake the laptop you need to press the power button.
S5 : shut down.
Those voltages are always present even when the laptop is off, on one condition:
the battery should be placed or the charger plugged in, those voltages are:
12 V DC.
5 V DC.
3.3 V DC.
The 5 and 3.3 V come from Voltage generator IC in the motherboard and 12 V
from the battery or charger.
Suspend Voltage ( SUS ON ) :
Those voltages are present in suspend or sleep mode (S1, S2, S3):
5 V DC.
3.3 V DC.
RAM voltage ( DDR1 2.5V, DDR2 1.8V, DDR3 1.5V , DDR4 1.2V)
Note that the 5 V and 3.3 V are not the same 5 V and 3.3 V as the Always voltages,
there is another voltage generator that generates those 5 and 3.3 V, although in
some rare cases there is only one voltage generator and those are the same as
the always voltages.
Power On voltage (RUN) ( S0 State ):
All the components have now their voltages.

Important Laptop motherboard circuits
Important Laptop motherboard circuits:
We'll see in this article the rest of the motherboard circuits which are: power
system circuit and VRM circuit and RAM power circuit, we'll discuss their functions
and failure symptoms and the possible reasons.
Power system circuit:
The function of the power system circuit is to generate 3.3 V and 5 V necessary to
power many Integrated Circuits and other circuits in the motherboard.
Power system Circuit simple Schematic diagram:
Below is simple schematic diagram of the power system circuit:
The power system circuit contains primary MOSFETs Q1 and Q2 and two secondary
MOSFETs Q3 and Q4 and an IC and sometimes two capacitors and two coils.
The Q1 and Q2 MOSFETs are controlled by the IC and allow the current from the
AC adapter or the battery to enter the IC which will convert the 19 V into 3.3 V
and 5 V.
Note the function of the two capacitors if they are present is somewhat tricky: we
know that the capacitor blocs the DC current which doesn't make sense here since
the current used is surely DC, so how this circuit works?
The capacitors are the real source of the 3.3 V and 5 V, they provide those voltages
by discharging and they are charged at the same time by the IC, this way we are
sure that we get EXACTLY the same desired voltages without any fluctuations.
Power system circuit failure symptoms:
The absence of the 3.3 V or 5 V.
No display on the screen.
Possible reasons:
problem 01:
The most common problem with the so many laptops is that it works only with
the AC adapter and not with the battery.
Possible reasons:
- The battery is broken: first thing to check is the battery, try another working
battery to make sure it's not the reason, if your laptop can run with another
battery that means you have to change the battery.
- The other possible reason is that Q3 is open circuited (it acts like an open
circuit), remove it then test it.
- The last reason is the IC is broken, change it!
Problem 02:
The laptop works with the battery only.
Possible reasons:
- One of the protection components is short circuited either the coil L or the diode
D or the fuse F, but the most probable is the Fuse, test them to make sure.
- Either Q1 or Q2 is short circuited, test them to make sure.
- The IC is broken, change it!
Problem 03:
The battery doesn't charge.
Possible reasons:
- The fuse near the battery is short, test it first thing.
- The battery is broken: check the battery, try another working battery to make
sure it's not the reason, if the new battery can charge that means your battery is
broken, change it!
- The Q5 MOSFET is open circuited not allowing any current to flow to the battery,
test it.
- The battery connector is broken, the charge level signal doesn't get to the I/O
controller, go to the battery connector and consult the schematic diagram to see
where to test the charging signal, if you don't find it change the battery connector.
- The IC is broken, change it!
- The I/O controller doesn't send the signal to the IC, check that signal from the
schematic diagram.
Problem 04:
The battery is charging but doesn't hold charge even if the laptop is turned off,
once you turn it on after some hours you find the battery dead.
Possible reasons:
- The battery is broken: check the battery, try another working battery to make
sure it's not the reason, if the new battery can hold charge that means your battery
is broken, change it!
- The Q3 MOSFET is short circuited (acting like a wire) allowing current to flow
from the battery even when the AC adapter is plugged in or the laptop is turned
off, test it.
- The IC is broken, change it!
Problem 05:
The battery gets damaged from no particular reason after a relatively short usage
time, you change another battery then the same thing happens.
Possible reasons:
- The Q5 MOSFET is short circuited (acting like a wire) allowing current to flow to
the battery even when it is fully charged which results in damaging the battery,
test that MOSFET.
- The IC is broken, change it!

How to read laptop schematic diagram
How to read laptop schematic diagram
Reading and understanding the Schematic diagram is the most important step in
the motherboard repair process.
The schematic diagram is a map and source of information for those who know
how to read it, and reading it requires basic information, logic and some
intelligence.
Understanding the schematic diagram can be seen as:
Knowing the general structure of that document.
Knowing what each page is about.
Being able to locate any component on the schematic diagram into the
motherboard and vise versa.
Being able to follow signals from page to page.
1- The general structure of the schematic diagram:
Generally a schematic diagram document first page contains a reference of the
laptop and the version of the document, it may contain a table of contents as well,
telling you what each page is about, but if the table of contents is absent it's always
possible to find out about each page, we'll see how soon.
Then comes the block diagram, which describes the connections between different
Integrated Circuits of the motherboard, you find the number of the page that
discuss every IC listed there, so it's an other way of a table of contents.
Then in the next page come sometimes some descriptions of the voltages
mentioned in the document, and sometimes the states in which they are present,
as well as some other general useful information.
Then generally come the description of every integrated circuit in the motherboard,
and every slot or port including the power button and the battery connector.
Then comes the description of each IC with all its pins and connections, if you want
a more detailed description to know exactly what are the IC's inputs and outputs
and everything you should download its datasheet.
After that comes the description of the motherboard circuits like the charger circuit
or the different voltage generator circuits, note that a circuit is a network of
electronic components that perform a specific task.
Charger Circuit
It's the same as using the battery except it made the schematic neat and simple.
To give you an idea of how simple the circuit becomes let's take a circuit with the
battery symbol and another one with the circle circuit:
When you use the circle symbol the negative side of the battery becomes the
ground.
The ground symbol in the middle is a digital ground while the other two are analog
ground.
Tips on how to read schematics:
Schematics philosophy is all about voltages change, for an IC to control
something it uses voltages, so test the presence of voltages is the heart of laptop
motherboard troubleshooting.
Try to identify the task a circuit is supposed to perform in order to
understand the circuit.
Of course be familiar with electronics and the common circuits such as
voltage dividers and MOSFETs.
Keep in mind that the real components are not placed as they are drawn in
the schematics.
Identify the inputs and outputs as well as power connections of the
integrated circuits you deal with, you do that by referring to the datasheet of the
IC.
Write down the page number of the principal motherboard integrated
circuits and put them in a place where you can see them, this will help you follow
the signals easily.
What Is a VRM and How Does It
Affect Your Processor’s
Performance?
By Alexander Fox – Posted on Aug 2, 2018 in Hardware Guides
The VRM uses three components to do its job: MOSFETs, inductors (also
called chokes), and capacitors. There’s also an integrated circuit (IC) to
control it all, sometimes called a PWM controller. A simplified schematic of
a single-phase VRM can be found below.
Multi-Phase VRMs
Modern computers require more than a single phase VRM. Modern power
systems use a multi-phase VRM. Multiple phases spread the power load
over a broader physical area, reducing heat production and stress on
components as well as providing other electrical improvements related to
efficiency and per-part costs.
When the first number is greater than 8, such as “12+1,” “18+1,” or even
higher, the manufacturer often makes use of a device called a doubler. A
doubler allows them to multiply the benefit of the existing phases without
building additional phases into the board. While this isn’t quite as effective
as wholly separated phases, it does allow for some electrical improvements
at less cost. And since it allows manufacturers to raise a buyer-facing
number at small expense to themselves, they often take advantage.
Overclockers should seek out a VRM made from reliable components. If its
components are cheap, they may fail to supply sufficient voltage under
load, causing surprise shutdowns. The most variable components are
capacitors and chokes. Look for leak-resistant capacitors. These are often
marketed under names like “Japanese Capacitors,” “Dark Capacitors,” or
“Solid Capacitors.” High overclocks will require better chokes as well. You
can find this named as super-ferrite chokes (SFCs) or “Premium Alloy
Chokes.” Also look for heatsinks over some or all MOSFETs – finned, if
possible.

Ön panel güç kaynağı AC anahtarı (AT / LPX; eski)
Dahili güç kaynağı AC şalteri (PC / XT / AT; eski)
Bunlar hala AC anahtarlardı; tek fark AC
anahtarının şimdi güç kaynağına entegre edilmek yerine uzaktan (genellikle kasanın
ön paneline) monte edilmiş olmasıdır. Anahtar, dört telli bir kabloyla güç kaynağına
bağlandı ve kablonun uçları, güç anahtarı üzerindeki kürek konektörlerine takılan
kürek konektör pabuçları ile donatıldı. Güç kaynağından anahtara giden kabloda dört
renk kodlu tel bulunur.
