CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Academic institutions are faced with challenges, particularly on the skills that they’ve

been producing and still cannot reach the needs of the industry. A significant number of

graduates today are able to fill the job openings, but cannot last due to job skill dullness. A

massive number of those skills are found deficient by companies are: technical, human resource,

etcetera. In addition to that, these same skills can also be mastered through On-the-Job training

programs.

On-the-Job Training (OJT) programs are course requirements where you can apply the

theories, principles, ideas, and on-hand comprehension practice learned in the academy under

supervision. These training programs believe that exposure of the students to work realities will

ideally sharpen their skills and prepare them once they get out of the university or college they

belong. This study emphasized the essence of an efficient On-the-Job Training Program.

Successfully achieving the OJT Program objectives ensures the possibility of good performer

graduates. The opposite will most likely produce poor performer graduates, thus, heading to job-

skill dullness. Moreover, On-the-Job Training programs, vital as it is, should be dynamic and

skill centered for the students to effectively adapt the practical learning in the workplace.

On-the-Job Training is very important and is helpful, if not, a utile key to surviving real

career world, here’s why: (1) High evaluation grade that you will receive from the employer; the

employer may absorb or offer you a job after graduation. (2) Your OJT background experience
is very important when applying for a job. Employers frequently ask about the OJT and how it is

related to the job that you are applying for. (3) OJT mastery that you have can help you find a

great job. (4) Your superior in the company/department that you are working for as an OJT may

recommend your skills to the company it affiliates or to another company that it knows. (5) OJT

will be your training ground. If you still have no idea on what is meant to be a worker, OJT will

give you at least ten percent (10%) of career realities. (6) The company that you are currently

applying, often makes a background check to successful applicants. If you have included your

OJT adviser or employer as your character references, the company may contact them to ask

information about your skills and knowledge as their student or intern. (7) It is a key for

applying, growing, enhancing and innovating the acquired knowledge at school in their

particular field of specialty. (8) It is a great platform to showcase your abilities that you have

been trained, where you can assess and define your strengths and weaknesses. (9) It is a way of

changing the student’s outlook in life through exposure in the performance of actual work

relevant to it that may serve as a stepping stone for a future career. (10) It develops interpersonal

skills/relationship with other employees within the cooperating agency.

On-the-job training is significant because it generates skills training into the real world,

and teaches students to yield in a different environment. Students may well learn new skills they

can use for a variety of purposes.

Statement of the problem

This study aims to determine mostly graduating students on their “On-the-Job Training

Proficiency: A Key To Surviving Real Career World.”. More specifically, it seeks to answer the

following questions:
1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 Age

1.2 Gender

1.3 Course Major

2. How do the respondents perceived the different factors of On-the-job Training

such as:

2.1 Work Practice

2.2 Work Attitude

2.3 Competency

2.4 Personality and Appearance

2.5 Training Evaluation

3. Is there any significant difference as how the respondents rate the extent of the

factors that affects their On-the-Job Training in terms of its demographic

profile?

4. What are the challenges encountered by the respondents during their On-the-

Job Training?

5. Based on the findings above of the study, what factors of On-the-Job Training

should need to improve and maybe recommend?


Significance of the Study

The result of this study would be of great importance to the following:

To the students, the results of this study would help in knowing them the essence of On-

the Job Training proficiency as the said program will serve as a lead, nor a clue to the real career

world, giving them lots of patterns and pointers to be followed. To provide them to have quality

health they need. To help them to be able to maintain their good health.

To the parents, for them to gain ideas about On-the-Job Training. To provide their

children guidance about the said topic.

To the teachers, who, guided by the findings of this study, would be aware of the

roles every student or trainees inside the company.

To the future researchers, who believe that this study would be helpful for them to be

aware of how the mastery on On-the-Job Training would be helpful on surviving real career

world.

Scope and Limitations

The locale of this study is University of Caloocan City, one of the leading universities in

Local Government Unit.

This study includes every student that undergoes On-the-Job Training. Aims to provide

vision for future decision making. This will provide significant difference as how the

respondents rate the extent of the factors that affects their On-the-job Training in terms of

respondents’ demographic profile. This will produce findings of factors of On-the-Job Training

should need to improve and maybe recommend.
