My defense plays a 5-3. What should my inside linebacker key and what
should my outside linebackers key?

Kinda depends on what kind of offense your playing against but our mlb was
either running a stunt with the nose to an A gap, reading the fb, or the
center,o-gds to fb triangle. I didn't coach the OLB's but they usually read
emol to near back or cross keyed to far back, just depends? los

I agree with the MLB keying the center and running back. In my defense, the
DEs have contain and the OLBs are basically head up on the guards. This
allows them to run free and make the play without having to worry about
containing. If this is the case, wouldn't it make more sense to have them key

the guards rather than the end man on the line of scrimmage? Since they're
basically head up on the guards shouldn't they key them?

We only ran the 53 a couple seasons 17, so I'm not an expert for sure! But,
vs a" balanced front" such as dbl tight,, our nose played a 0 tech with mlb
stacked, DT's usually a 4i and DE's in a tight 9, olb's played about a 50 tech I
think? Vs one te only, we'd slide to a strong shade, 3 and 5, weakside. Nose
and mlb had the A- gaps, DT's- usually B-gaps but could exchange, OLB's-C-

read backfield flow, some like both depending on who they play, its just up to
you, whatever your guys can do the easiest to make the plays! los

We key flow. Strong flow, counter flow. If FB steps in your direction you are
meeting him on his side of the lOS keeping outside arm free, backside backer
would have counter flow, checking for counter and boot. Mike scrapes to
make a play unless flow is A gap (option), then he and FB are becoming good
friends. Want the LB's aggressive, ends are charge of contain. We do this in

We let the MLB read the FB. and cross read with the OSLBs vs a spread and
wing t we always cross read. Have been very successful doing this.

What is there pass drops? Do you cover flats with olb, or do you drop off the
d-ends?

backers had flats, but we also would roll the coverage alot so the corner
would have flats, very tough on the OLBs, that is honestly why we don't run it
anymore, it put them in a bind too much and they actually played slower due
to thinking too much
