ECE1006 Introduction to Nanoscience and Nanotechnology

Objectives:
 To understand the basic concepts involved in Nano science.
 To gain knowledge about various methods of synthesis, characterization and applications
in Nanotechnology

Expected Outcome:
The student will be able to:
1. Have a clear understanding the fundamental concepts for Nano science
2. Be aware of the synthesis methods for various important Nano materials
3. Have knowledge of the Nano scale Characterization techniques
4. Get an appreciation of applications of Nanotechnology in various fields of Science and
Engineering

Module:1 Introduction 4 hours SLO:

Band theory of Solids - Basic properties of Conductors, Insulators, and Semiconductors. Band
theory of typical semiconductors, Statistical mechanics – Fundamental concepts of classical
statics (Maxwell-Boltzmann, Bose-Einstein) and Quantum statistics (Fermi-Dirac statistics).
Fermi distribution function and Fermi level.
Module:2 Quantum Mechanics: 4 hours SLO:

Basics in Quantum Mechanics, Schrödinger wave equation and its applications. Quantum
confinement and density of states in 0-D, 1-D and 2-D. Quantum mechanical tunneling process.
Module:3 Change in material properties at Nano scale: 2 hours SLO:

Effects of the nanometre length scale- Change in physical, chemical, mechanical, magnetic,
electronic and optical properties at Nano scale.
Module:4 Important Nano materials: 4 hours SLO:

Engineering Nano materials, Basic Types of Nanostructures- Fundamental concepts on
semiconductor hetero structure (super lattice and quantum wells), Carbon Nanotubes,
Nanowires, and Quantum Dots.

Module:5 Fabrication methods for nanomaterials 5 hours SLO:

Top-down processes- Ball milling, Optical lithography, E-Beam lithography, Micro machining,
Bottom-up processes- Physical vapour deposition, Chemical vapour deposition, Self-assembly,
Molecular beam epitaxy.
Module:6 Characterization Technique- Microscopy: 5 hours SLO:
1,4,14,17
Classification of characterization methods, Principles of Electron Microscopy - Scanning
Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Principle of probe
microscopy –Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) & Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM).

Module:7 Characterization Technique – Spectroscopy: 4 hours SLO:

Principle and operation of UV-vis-NIR Spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy,
EELS (Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy).
