CHAPTER ONR
HISTORY OF BUZURGAN

1-1 Introduction
Buzurgan Field is located south-east of Amara near the Iraqi-
Iranian border, about 60 kilometers to the south-east of Al-
Emara City, the center of Missan Governorate. It was the first
field discovered in the province by the French company
Aerab in 1969 containing one reservoir. The 23 exploration
wells were drilled until 2009 of which 20 are crude oil wells
with 87% dug in the field while there were wells to inject
water.
The structure elongates from the northern-west to the southern-
east, consist of two-dome, the southern dome is larger and higher
than the northern dome.
The structural contour maps on Mishrif formation show that
BUZURGAN oil field is an anticline fold with 60 KM long and
8 KM width.
The first exploration wells (BU-1) was drilled in the north dome
in 1969, the second exploration wells (BU-3) was drilled in the
south dome in 1970. After the research and studies which
focused on Mishrif formation, the decision of production was
taken 1975 by drilling a well in the south dome followed by
another one in the north dome 1976. Mishrif formation consists
of six units: MA, MB11, MB12, MB21, MC1 and MC2.
Above the Mishrif formation is Alkaseeb formation (it represent
as a cap rock for Mishrif) and under it Alromila formation.
The Mishirif structure is divided into three segments: north dome,
south dome, and saddle

The main division of Buzuragan field:

1. Mishrif formation.
2. Alkaseeb formation.
3. Alromila formation.
The Mishrif formation subdivides into six units (MA, Mb11,
MB12, Mb21, MC1, MC2) because variation of composition,
petro physical properties and fluid properties between them.
Q/ Why does MB21 consider very important?
Because it has these properties:
1- Good permeability (less 10 md).
2- The average porosity (13.3-17.6).
3- Contain the most of oil and high amount of reserve.

1.4- Purpose and choice of the location

BU. 13 is located at about 1.3 KM to the west of BU.3,coording

to the available depth contour maps, the well is expected to be 10
below BU.6 and 15 km above BU.3 it was expected that M.21.

1.5- principal structural Results

According to the drilling project of the well which

were based on depth contour maps interpreted from
1974 seismic survey (march 75) and updaited after
results of BU.10, BU.11 and BU.6.
The top of Lower Fars Jeribe-Euphrates, Mishrif and
Mb.21 reservoir were expected as follows
Lower Fans -2040m
Jeribe-Euphrates -2810m
Mishrif -3780m
Mb.21 -3780m
But after drilling the well the following result were obtained
TOP lower Fars - 2042.45m Lower than expected by 2.45m
-Teribe-Euphrates - 2781.95m Higher than expected by
about 28m
Mishirf - 3643.45m higher than expected by 1.55m
Mb.21 - 3775.451 higher than expected by 4.5517
