Lesson Plan

GASP’s Spring Show Week 3: Inspiration and Design Day

Date: 1/30/19

Enrichment Specialist:
Annmarie Bustamante

Grade: 3-5

Date Implemented: Spring
(At least 4 Weeks Before Spring Showcase)

Activity Description:
This is the 3rd in a 6 part series. This week students be taught a brief intro to
Draping/Pattern Making. They’ll form teams (2-3 max), practice complimenting each
other’s design choices/plans and also learn the art of constructive criticism. Students
will collectively choose their team’s color scheme and fabrics, and start designing.

Student’s CS will include 5 colors. They’ll collectively decide which fabric to choose, and
start draping or pattern making their collections. They won’t do any sewing in this class,
but will have all fabric cut out and ready to sew next week. If they don’t finish there are
other times I can lend myself to sewing help.

Additional Sew Time:

Students will also have all day on Wednesdays to complete any hand sewing and
Fridays (after snack) to use the sewing machines with my assistance/ supervision.

Objectives:

1. Teach basic draping and pattern making.

2. Form Teams and Choose Color and Fabric Types

3. Help them see that they can be a valuable part of a community/team project.
(Continuing Theme)

Reaching Objectives:

1. Show sewers a short lesson on how to make the same exact skirt for
themselves, but with two different design methods. We will cover the math, and
art sides of the students brains as they learn to drape and pattern make.

2. Get them inspired by fashion and art. Give them materials to draw. Assist them in
draping or pattern making. Our goal by the end of the day will be for them to
mark, and accurately cut out their apparel creations. If they don’t get this far, they
can work on it Wednesday or Friday before or after snack.

3. They will need to learn to discuss differing ideas without hurting each other’s
feelings. I imagine this will take a lot of practice, but is paramount in them
creating art as a team. We will encourage each member of a team to give input
for the group’s designs. Students will practice how they can encourage each
other, give constructive criticism, and keep open an mind.

Students can compliment or use CC.

Reflection Questions:

1. Do you prefer pattern making or draping?

2. What was your favorite compliment you heard today?
3. What’s an example constructive criticism that was used today?
4. What’s your favorite color from your color scheme? Did everyone agree to
these colors right away?
