Kurtz is the other side. The self-aware ego.

But one that, rather than defining himself against the world
(he is nothing he sees) defines himself as the possessor of it. He is not the world, but the world is
subordinate to him. (Marlow, too, seeks to put himself outside the world – does he do this for any less
disingenuous reasons?)
