Interest Paper
Introduction:
My name is Rashid Ayyoub, I got my associate in science degree from Glendale
community college, then I’ve transfer to ASU in fall 2018, and this semester is my
first semester at ASU. My major is electrical engineering (Electrical power and
energy system). I decided to be in this path because I want to be in this path, and
I’m positive that this path will be a great path for me and helps me to hit all my
targets in life. In addition, there is a lot I can do as an electrical engineering
person, for instance working at power and energy company, doing a solar panels
project, working on component at intel or Microsoft, or I could be working in
Microelectronics company that does a microcontroller, so there is a lot of options
that ‘Electrical engineering major’ can offer to a student.
How does the area that I choose impact the nation?
Without electrical energy it’d be no broadcasting and television systems, no
telephone communication or telegraphy. In order to arrange automatic
sequences of operation in production, devices of control a regulation engineering
are required which, today, are driven almost exclusively by electrical energy. In
addition, the drive of machines, hoisting gear and lifts is enabled in a simple form
by the electromotor which in railway transport, also has the advantage over
internal combustion engines. There are many buildings where an air-conditioning
system including heating, cooling and ventilation is installed for the operation of
which electrical energy is required. At higher ambient temperatures, foodstuffs
can only be kept for a prolonged in refrigerators or cold-storage rooms which
usually are also operated with electrical energy.
Within 10-20 years, electrical engineering could help the nation by creating a car
that doesn’t do an air pollution, or a cheaper system that can use the power of
sun to create energy and power instead of using petroleum products, plus I think
within 10-20 years engineering can improve the solar panels system, also
engineering within 20 years could exploitation of wind energy more to create
electricity and energy that could be using to lighting the street.

A problem of being an electrical engineering is this major could be a dangerous

major, plus you get to go to lots of lab and do lots of research, you really have to
love it in order to success. By doing some research about electrical engineering
major I found out that this major is the third hardest major of engineering, so its
pretty much hard but I worth it, because hard work eventually will pay off.
Problem TO BE PURSUED:

I want to talk about problems that’s the world can face in the next 40 years. If we
keep depending in non-renewable sources of energy, we will face a huge problem
on the future. We will be running out of oil and its byproducts. So, we as an
engineering must focus on the renewable energy and take advantage form wind
and sun energy to convert it to electricity, by building up a high-quality system
that can convert the energy from sun and wind to electricity.

I see that the technology now is going to use the solar panel a lot in the future,
because it’s good for the human and the environment since the system doesn’t
cause any kind of pollutions.
RELEVANT CAREER PROSPECTS
Like I said before, being an electrical engineering offers you lots of opportunity
and lots of options in your career life, for instance, an electrical engineer can
work in a variety of engineering industries: Aerospace, Automotive, Chemical,
Construction, Defense, Electronics, Consumer Goods, Marine, Materials and
Metals, Oil and Gas, Pharmaceuticals, Power Generation, Rail, Telecoms, and
Utilities. Electrical engineers can work for corporations, non-profit
organizations, or government agencies. They can also become managers,
patent attorneys, professors, or work in the financial sector.
If I want to talk about myself, as an electrical engineering major I’d like to work in
Microelectronics Engineer path, because I love dealing with design and micro-
fabrication of tiny electronic circuit components, plus being a part of Power
Engineer that deals with electricity and design of related electrical devices such as
transformers, generation, motors and power electronics. Or working with Signals
Processing Engineer that deals with signals, such as analog or digital signals.

My goals for next summer is to go and apply for internship, to work at digital
signals company or a power/energy company, just to get close to my major and
know what’s those company do, and get some points to see if I can get hire there
after getting my degree.
RATIONALE FOR MY APPROACH
I always look at the things from the top, trying to understand the problem first
before I jump to the solution, I usually do a research about the problem and get
more info and details, ask people who know more than me to see if I’m going to
be able to solve the problem. For being an electrical engineering, you are the one
who going to be responsible about solving the electricity problem, plus dealing
with tough problem, so its an advantage to learn, understand and use a good and
constant way to solve the problem.

RISK-REWARD ASSESSMENT
It always going to be a chance to success and a chance to failure, so I’m as a
student who wants to be an electrical engineering, I’d expect everything happen
in my career life. The point is to not give up on things that I’d love to achieve. If I
fail, I will learn from this lesson, and if I success in my career life, I would keep
going and learning to be more successful and hit all my targets.
I think as an electrical engineering major, the worst possible scenario in terms of
my career is to not get hire once I graduated, but that will not be too bad,
because if it happened I will take courses and attend internship to improve my
skills and ability, plus putting that in my resume surely be an advantage, and will
increase my chances to get an interview so I get a job.

As I’m reading the explanation for the interest paper, it said that engineers are
expected to change area/jobs roughly every 5 to 7 years, well I think that’s going
to be a lot of fun, because I will learn more stuff, and it could be a good thing for
me, so I could get more chances to go up on my career. Plus, learning what you
don’t want to pursue is also very useful, and the main point is to not give up
without giving it your all. It would be sometimes a bad experience, and I’m as an
engineering I would always expect bad experience to happen, so I will always be
prepared to not let the bad experience effect bad on me.

PREPARATION TODATE
I went to a good high school back to my country Jordan, my high school is one of
the best school of teaching science, that was an advantage to me to think for
being an engineer major. Plus, my dad is a teacher, so he spent a lot of his time
teaching me some new science things, which of course reflected positively on my
personality.
I’m done with math classes as an engineering major, I already finished Calc 1,2,3
and differential equation, taking these classes was very useful to me. Calculus is a
branch of mathematics that is all about mapping change, you get a series of
mathematical equations that come together to tell you how things change over a
period of time. Calculus used by loads of industries. Economists use it to predict
maximum profits through calculation of future costs and revenue and it’s
supposed to be used by scientists in population dynamics and particle physics.

I took physics 1 and 2, I learned a lot from these two classes, these classes were
really useful to me as an engineering major, because physics enhance my ability
to think clearly, to pay attention to detail and to construct logical and reasoned
arguments, also these classes helped me to gain experience of searching for and
digesting information from a variety of sources including lectures, the library and
other people.
Physics 2 pretty much talked about electric field and how electric field creates an
electric current, and electric current create electromagnetic field, and how
moving electron create a current and if we accelerate those electrons we get
electromagnetic waves, so its pretty much talked about electricity and circuits.

I took my engineering analysis 102 and 103, they were a fun class, I did three
projects on my engineering analysis 102, the racket and this project was easy to
do and the point of doing this project I guess is to use math to get a pretty close
estimate using math to determine where the rocket going to descent. I did also a
Lego Mindstorms turret shooter, and it was all about building anthropomorphic
and writing out the code to program the anthropomorphic, and the last project
was the catapult, and the point is to make the catapult that accurate and precise.

For my engineering analysis 103 class, we learned how MATLAB impact the
technology, and how MATLAB makes things easier, plus we practiced a lot on
MATLAB, so we get used to it because practice makes perfect. We worked on
microcontroller and how microcontroller appears everywhere. We spent 2 weeks
in the class working on AUTO CAD and we drew a 3D object.

To be more specific, I took circuit and digital circuit last semester, and I’ve learned
a lot in these class, since both classes are related to what I want to do in future as
an EE major specified in electronics or power. This semester I’m taking circuit II,
electromagnetics, signals and systems process and linear algebra. The classes I’m
taking this semester are so important for EE major. For instance, in my circuit
class, I’m learning MOSFIT, and MOSFIT is a very important topic. Also, we are
taking most likely half of the class portion by focusing in this specific topic. My
cousin is taking circuit III, and he told me that circuit III is all about MOSFIT. In the
electromagnetics class we are learning the electric field and magnetic field and
these two topics are very important and it build a lot of applications on these two
topics.
Signals and systems process, we are learning the Fourier series and transforms,
and this class is a very important class for people who want to go for control
system and signals.

SPECIAL RELEVANT SKILLS

I taught my self how to work independently, and how to be on time and trying
hard to always beat the schedule. Plus, some of my classes I took, they taught me
how to work as a team to make things done. Working as a team is a good way to
learn how to communicate with other people, it also makes things easy when you
understand how to communicate with other people. Communicate will always
help you to break down complex problems into simpler solvable problems, so that
will be always an advantage to you.

In my point of view and by seeing all the job description, I feel like the whole
world are going into coding and most of the companies are encourage student to
go into a software engineering, and that’s where the revolution of the technology
goes. So, I am working hard to get this part done. I feel coding could be easy and
could be hard as well, depends on the person. For me I feel that coding didn’t
click with me as fast as other topic did. So, I must put more effort and hours to get
this part done.
As I said before, I’ve learned MATLAB and C++, through out the classes that I’ve
take, and because of the lack of practice, I’ve forgotten some of the materials, so I
need to revisit them as soon as I can.
FUTURE Plans
For my future ‘short terms’ plans, is to deal with my classes for next semester,
because I’m taking hard classes, attend S.T.I.M shop again, Making sure to get to
use MATLAB and get really good at it.
For my ‘long terms’ plans, is to graduate from ASU, as an electrical engineering
dealing with a power and energy, trying to get PHD in electrical engineering.
Working in digital circuit and dealing with some electricity component. Exploit my
summer doing internship with power and energy company and digital circuit
design that deals with an electricity component.

I want to get my bachelor’s degree first, then get my master, I want to work while
I’m getting my master’s degree, so I can get some experience to help me get a
cool job after I get my master. Then I’m thinking about going to Gulf’s state after
finishing my master’s degree from ASU, I speak two different languages, and
Arabic is my mother language so It’s an advantage to go and work at Gulf’s state
(more benefits and money). If I have chance in future, I’ll come back to ASU to get
my PhD in electrical engineering (Electronics circuit) and be a professor, that’s my
dream.
I know it’s a long road to go, but with good perpetration and more effort, I can do
it.
