Our Projects
2017 has been another productive year. Some of
our projects have become annual events and
some are one off excitements!
Kelp Management
The kelp management plan has worked relatively well
this year. Pippa Swan is the key player on this project.
She liaises with ELC and local contractor, Kevin Thomson,
who has been wonderful in supporting this management
plan. Kevin gathers his team and equipment at short
notice and will hit the beach between tides.
In response to heavily negative comment from East Links
residents last year, a majority of the kelp moves have
been simple relocations over the sewage interceptor
pipe. It is not pretty but it does wash the kelp fly larvae
out.
We had one very serious dump early in the year that had
to be moved off site. This is costly both in cash and
environment terms and we try to avoid it if possible.

Estate Inspections
Now an annual event, volunteers record infrastructure
defects and environmental issues that that we think need
to be addressed by ELC or other statutory authorities. In
2017, the inspection reinforced the need to deal with East
Beach and Lamer Street issues and we have begun to do
this. Road repairs to Lamer St and Shore St have been
carried out and the East Beach Project and sea defence
review are in hand. Works are still required to Castle and
Church Streets

Area Partnership
Mike Shaw attends the Area Partnership Meetings and DSHNG
infrastructure concerns have been raised and addressed with
his help. ELC should now action maintenance of the Beach
Garden and pathway garden and complete the repair of
seating on Victoria Street. The DSHNG proposals to upgrade
the Coastal Pathway from the harbour to Winterfield are well
underway and road repairs have been carried out at Lamer St
and Shore St with AP funds.
Civic Engagement
v DSHNG supported Civic Week and ran an information stall at Lauderdale Park.
v Mike Shaw organised and ran the tombola stall to help to raise funds for the RNLI and was
helped on a very happy day by DSHNG members. Great fun was had by all!
v Teresa Barnes and Millie Cornwall supported by Colin Barnes and Kenny Maule designed
and presented ‘Past and Present of Dunbar’ to Dunbar’s Primary Schools to great acclaim.
The work centred on the history of the fishing industry at the Dunbar harbours. Farting
fish remain a highlight!
A final word -
Dunbar Shore and Harbour Neighbourhood
Group has become a sociable and active group
since its inception and now has a reputation for
getting things done.
