Our Projects
2017 has been another productive year. Some of
our projects have become annual events and
some are one off excitements!

Keep Scotland Beautiful Rural Seaside Award

For the sixth year running, Dunbar’s East Beach has won a Rural
Seaside Award. Although not always obviously beautiful, we
get the gong because the water quality remains very good and
we regularly litter pick, garden, and generally try to love our
beach. We are proud of the award and grateful to ELC for their
support.

Litter Picking + Beach Cleans

Litter Picking has been handled entirely by Susan
Mowatt and her family. They have been able to
garner support from friends and family and operated
beach cleans on a monthly basis over the summer.
They keep an eye on the beach generally and we owe
them a huge vote of thanks.

Kelp Management
The kelp management plan has worked relatively well
this year. Pippa Swan is the key player on this project.
She liaises with ELC and local contractor, Kevin Thomson,
who has been wonderful in supporting this management
plan. Kevin gathers his team and equipment at short
notice and will hit the beach between tides.
In response to heavily negative comment from East Links
residents last year, a majority of the kelp moves have
been simple relocations over the sewage interceptor
pipe. It is not pretty but it does wash the kelp fly larvae
out.
We had one very serious dump early in the year that had
to be moved off site. This is costly both in cash and
environment terms and we try to avoid it if possible.

East Beach Regeneration – again…

Back in 2013, we had sand but after heavy
storms in 2014, the shore was devastated.

A small DSHNG group has been working
with ELC and external consultants since
then to develop a live regeneration trial.
We have consulted widely with the help of
Kenny Maule. Scottish Natural Heritage,
Scottish Water, SEPA and the Crown
Estates are all on board now.

Plans are now underway and 2018 will see:

The Harbour Gateway Project –

The Creel Loaders
The Creel Loaders
The Creel Loaders project was successfully delivered to
much acclaim in September 2016. The final touch was
added with an information panel in Spring 2017.
Huge thanks go to Kevin Heffernan, Ian Dane and Brian
Cox for living with and delivering what has become an
iconic landmark in Dunbar’s harbour area and to Kenny
Maule and Ian Dane for masterminding the information
panel design.

And there is more…

Victoria Street History Panels
Kenny Maule delivered the history panel
project single handedly, including all funding,
management and panel design. New paving
and the inclusion of Rita Bradd’s poem make
this a ‘go to’ spot for tourists en route to the
harbour.

Local Issues and Planning

DSHNG has expressed strong views in respect of the
Assembly Rooms and Coastguard sites. We rejected
proposals for thoughtless development of the
Coastguard site that would have seen a wall of flats
and land lost to carparking to facilitate development
at the Assembly Rooms.

DSHNG has expressed the view that the Assembly

Rooms site is large enough to accommodate parking
as well as additional mews type housing, should the
owners wish to capitalize on their landholding.
We would prefer the Coastguard site to be used for
family type accommodation in keeping with the
Coastguard
Coastguard Houses themselves.

Estate Inspections
Now an annual event, volunteers record infrastructure
defects and environmental issues that that we think need
to be addressed by ELC or other statutory authorities. In
2017, the inspection reinforced the need to deal with East
Beach and Lamer Street issues and we have begun to do
this. Road repairs to Lamer St and Shore St have been
carried out and the East Beach Project and sea defence
review are in hand. Works are still required to Castle and
Church Streets

Area Partnership
Mike Shaw attends the Area Partnership Meetings and DSHNG
infrastructure concerns have been raised and addressed with
his help. ELC should now action maintenance of the Beach
Garden and pathway garden and complete the repair of
seating on Victoria Street. The DSHNG proposals to upgrade
the Coastal Pathway from the harbour to Winterfield are well
underway and road repairs have been carried out at Lamer St
and Shore St with AP funds.

Helping to keep our area

safe - CAPP
DSHNG is represented by volunteers
on the Community and Police
Partnership panel. It meets about
once a month and issues affecting
our area ward are actioned by PC
Gavin Ross and/or our Community
Warden, Jimmy Wilson.

Civic Engagement
v DSHNG supported Civic Week and ran an information stall at Lauderdale Park.
v Mike Shaw organised and ran the tombola stall to help to raise funds for the RNLI and was
helped on a very happy day by DSHNG members. Great fun was had by all!
v Teresa Barnes and Millie Cornwall supported by Colin Barnes and Kenny Maule designed
and presented ‘Past and Present of Dunbar’ to Dunbar’s Primary Schools to great acclaim.
The work centred on the history of the fishing industry at the Dunbar harbours. Farting
fish remain a highlight!

DUNBAR SHORE AND HARBOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD GROUP FEBRUARY 2018

A final word -
Dunbar Shore and Harbour Neighbourhood
Group has become a sociable and active group
since its inception and now has a reputation for
getting things done.

We would like to feel that we do have the

concerns of all our neighbours in mind when we
start our projects. We hand-delivered 600
invitations to an open session in December and
we warmly welcomed the residents who came
along for tea and lovely cakes (thank you, Joan!).

We are happy to consider any project that makes

our area a better place to live or work. So if you
have any ideas or you would like to get stuck into
a project or issue, large or small, that you have in
mind, just come along and tell us about it – we
love a challenge and will share the load! …when there are neighbours
at hand?
Happy 2018! Pippa Swan
