Classroom Management Plan:

Interpersonal Connections:

In PSI I quickly learned that classroom leadership is vital when managing a classroom. A

Teacher must model desirable traits to their students and create an environment of mutual

respect. In order for mutual respect to be a prominent element in a classroom climate a Teacher

must connect individually with their students. A Teacher must understand that their students are

individuals with specific needs and desires. I have been told that my best attributes as an

Educator are my warmth, creativity, adaptability, and empathy. I plan to use these attributes to

connect with my students. Connecting with students can be achieved in many ways, some of

which are listed below:

-Greeting Students at the door in the morning before class begins

-Addressing Students by their desired name and gender

-Attending extracurricular activities that Students are involved in

-Asking Students about their time after school (i.e. weekend, family vacation, evening time)

-Learning more about a Student’s unique interests and asking questions

-Complimenting students on their strengths and giving them unique responsibilities

Monitoring:

A Teacher must also have competency in the following concepts:

1) Scanning the room: The Teacher must be constantly aware of both positive and negative

behaviors as they occur.

2) Teacher with-it-ness: The Teacher is able to select appropriate responses to a variety of

behaviors as they occur and to follow up. They are to take the best course of action

possible given the information that they are given and what they are able to infer.

3) Whole class instruction: The Teacher is able to lead his or her Students in instructor led

teaching. She/he should be the one dictating the climate of the classroom as well as the

tasks that are being completed.

4) One-on-one interaction: The Teacher is providing attention to one student in particular

while being aware of other behaviors in the classroom. This is an excellent tool for

building interpersonal relationships.

5) Politeness: The Teacher must display professional qualities and empathy towards their

students.

6) Remaining calm: No matter the given situation the Teacher is able to keep a level head.

she/he does not lose their temper or involve themselves in any conflict with a student.

Bumps:
The “bumps” are a method that can be used to gain attention and settle a classroom when using

whole class instruction. They are a series of simple steps that can be utilized primarily at the

beginning of a lesson or when coming back after group work etc. When using these steps you

likely will not have to go through them all, however, it is important to know that you have an

action prepared if the class is not attentive. It is important to demonstrate the stillness and calm

that you want to receive.

Steps:

1) Settle Yourself: be still, have good posture, and call for attention

2) Wait (5 or 6 seconds)

3) Step forward and repeat call for attention

4) Wait (3-5 seconds)

5) Count backwards from 5

6) Address student by name

7) Check in with student later on in class
