ALTHOUGH PETER THE GREAT HAD MANY Friends:
GREAT ACHIEVEMENTS DURING HIS TIME AS SOVERIGN OF RUSSIA, HE ALSO HAD SOME SHORTCOMINGS. Catherine PETER CAME TO POWER AT A DIFFICULT Peter’s second wife TIME AND SOUGHT TO BRING RUSSIA BACK TO MODERN STANDARDS. TO MAKE THESE NECESSARY CHANGES, PETER HAD A CRUEL AND TYRANNICAL REIGN. PETER ALSO TRIED HIS SON ALEXIS FOR HIGH TREASON AND HAD HIM SECRETLY EXECUTED. DESPITE HIS FAILURES AND SHORTCOMINGS, PETER PROVED TO BE A GREAT RULER OVERALL. Selection Committee, Hello, my name is Pyotr Alexeyevich Romanov, and I write this letter to you in the hopes that you will consider me when choosing an absolute ruler for your country, Kambi. I believe that I am qualified for the position because I have proved to be a competent absolute monarch in my previous job as Czar of Russia. As the ruler of Russia, I succeeded in expanding territory, creating a mighty army, and opening to country to other influences. I believe that during my time in Russia, I showed that I had a particular focus on the important aspects of a country, such as military, education, and centralized government. When I became to absolute monarch of Russia, I faced many challenges, as Russia was very far behind the rest of the world. I sought to change Russia by bringing in Western influences. I thought that education was very important, so I made many educational reforms that helped the people of Russia to expand their knowledge, especially in the areas of navigation, math, medicine, engineering, and science. Since many of these concepts were new to the Russian people, I hired Europeans to come teach the subjects. I made many other domestic reforms that shaped the daily life of the Russian people. They helped to modernize Russia and help draw the country out from our isolation. Some of these domestic reforms included simplifying the alphabet, improving technology, as well as reestablishing serfdom, which essentially ensured more soldiers and laborers for the government. A ruler that I often compare myself to is Philip II, because I believe that we shared similar goals when we were made absolute monarchs. Philip II sought to expand Spanish influence and strengthen the Catholic Church, while I focused on strengthening Russia’s military, expanding the country’s borders, and centralizing royal power. I believe that during my time as Czar of Russia, I met most of the goals that I had set for myself, while Philip II did not experience quite as much success. A prime example would be the success of my military. As the Czar I built a mighty army that won our long war with Sweden and helped the country to expand its borders. Philip II, on the other hand, created a massive armada to fight the English overseas. The armada was defeated by the English, and this eventually led to the decline of Spanish naval superiority. As previously mentioned, I am very proud to have done so well in expanding the Russian borders, increasing our land area. Philip II initially wanted to spread Spanish influence, but his support for the Catholic Church caused a revolt in the Netherlands, causing the Netherlands to eventually declare their independence from Spain. If you would like more detailed information about my past experiences and my qualifications, feel free to reference my Facebook page which should provide you with any necessary information. I look forward to meeting with you to discuss this employment opportunity. Thank you. Sincerely, Pyotr Alexeyevich Romanov
