What Type of Teacher are You?
General Education Technological Education
Teach general subjects, Teach technological subjects,
Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12. Grades 9 to 12.

Equivalent to at least 3 years full-time study

oTeacher education program


Equivalent of 2 years (4 semesters) full-time study
20% teaching methods, 20% practice teaching, 10% education foundations, 50%
any other area of education
A minimum of 80 days practice teaching
Leads to certification of Qualification and Registration (CQR)

Language proficiency
o For elementary school must hold French language basic qualifications (primaire,
moyen, intermediare and superieur)
oFor secondary schools there are no French language requirements needed

Professional suitability (be of good character)

Second Language
Education

Requirements: Technological Stream
Education
Secondary school diploma
• (Grade 12) or equivalent
Teacher education program
• Equivalent of 2 years (4 semesters) full-time study
• 20% teaching methods, 20% practice teaching, 10% education foundations, 50% any other area of education
• A minimum of 80 days practice teaching
• Leads to certification
• Prepares you to teach one of the technological subjects
Proof of competence in your technological field (i.e. work experience)
• 5 years of work experience, OR
• Combination of post-secondary education and work experience
Language Proficiency
• Education in English or French, OR
• Tests: IELTS, TOEFL iBT or TESTCan
Professional suitability (be of good character)
• Criminal record check, Applicant Declaration, Statements of Professional Standing

Certificate of Qualification and Registration with
Conditions
• May be eligible if you have:
– a two-semester (one-year) teacher education program that is academic and at
the post-secondary level
– at least 20 days of practice teaching
– one teaching qualification
– certification or authorization to teach in the jurisdiction where completed

• Lists coursework required to satisfy the length and content of a four-


semester teacher education program in Ontario

• Valid for 5 years with the possibility of a one-year extension

Documents

• Specific format and method of submission


• Incorrect format and method will result in delays!

• Documents you submit yourself


• Proof of identity, proof of name change, Criminal Record Check, teaching
certificates from other jurisdictions

• Documents submitted by the granting institution


• Academic transcripts, proof of language proficiency, Statements of
Professional Standing, verification letters for degrees (if necessary)

• Translation for documents not in English or French


• Documents submitted by the granting institution must first be sent to the
College, you will then receive copies to translate

• Compare your credentials with the requirements for certification

• Complete the online application

• TestCan (French test) only offered in Toronto and Ottawa

What is an Alternative Career?


• Related occupations you may consider working in while you pursue your
licence, or even if you decide that you do not want to pursue a licence.
• Usually do not require a licence.
• In the same field or a related field.
• Make use of your existing skills and experience.

Why Consider an Alternative Career?


• Keep your skills current, gain Canadian work experience, and build your
networks.
• Can be a stepping stone to prepare you to work in your target profession.

• Strong proficiency in English or French is required to work in a regulated
profession.

• The government offers free classes to improve English or French language skills.
• Offered for different levels of ability.
• Includes some occupation-specific language training.

• You can be assessed when you arrive in Ontario at a Coordinated Language


Assessment and Referral System (CLARS) centre.
