EXERCISE 2
1. What is the comparison used by the student in estimating effectiveness of the IRS
program?
-Incremental cost effectiveness ratio
2. Calculate the number of malaria episodes averted by the IRS program?
# of malaria episode(IRS)=300
((0) Intervention
= $4500-0/300-400
=-$45
5. Calculate the cost per life saved /death averted by the IRS program
Case fatality rate=5%
Episode of malaria by IRS=300
Therefore=5% ×300÷100%=15
=300-15=285
Then 285×45=$12,825
EXERCISE 3
((0) Intervention
= $800-0/200-400
=-$4
EXERCISE 3
A. No malaria intervention
100 families
B. IRS
C. ITN
Reduction rate of 50 %
Total 200
Calculation
ICER for IRS= change in cost of IRS and do nothing/change in effect of IRS and do nothing
Therefore= 4500-0/300-400
= -45
ICER for ITN compared to IRS= change in cost of ITN and IRS/ change in effect of ITN and
IRS
=800-4500/200-300
=37
According to the WHO threshold, both ITN & IRS are highly effective ($37 & $45/episode
respectively compared) however, the ITN is more effective and has less cost since it reduce
malaria episode by half.
