lower taxes, less government and more

The System Works . . .

their candidates.

“Adjudication of
Power”
The process of figuring out who rules whom.

Not compromise, but CONFRONTATION.

It is the only real zero sum game.

REAL POLITICAL POWER IS . . .
Forcing politicians to act the way you want
or replacing them.
POWER AIN’T ACCESS!
There is a difference – and if you confuse
the two you might as well go home now.

the Congressman.”

REMINDER
 Direct Personal Path
• Path chosen by dictators and despots
• Hands on the lever to make things go
• Working for a politician

• Or

• Running for Office

 No glamour
 No media interviews
 Less understood
 Much more powerful
 Control
the environment of those on the direct
personal path

 Be an agent of conflict on the outside

radical environmentalists, and it could be . . .

Education
Mobilization
 Education of Politicians
 “If we could just get them to understand
_____ then they will support us.”

 Education of “the people”

 “If enough people are behind this, they
have to pass it.”
 How many of you have staunch liberal family
members?

 How many have had political conversations with

them?

 How many have converted them all to being fierce

liberty activists?

 If you can’t convince your own family members—

what makes you think you can educate strangers?
 Our letter will convince “the people”
 Who to?
• All households?

 If 95% of people throw your mail out—you are a

genius!
 Well if they don’t read the mail I will blog about it
 Education Theory is attractive
• Easy
• Not controversial
• Fun to write
• Soft
• Safe
 80%
of citizens support voluntary union
membership, yet

 Millions
of workers in this country STILL
live under the threat of forced union
dues.

 Can we educate our way out of this?

“Political success is determined by
the number and effectiveness of
the political activists on either
side.”
-Morton Blackwell
It’s a very small sliver of people
that make the difference.
 Voter Turnout
 Partisan mood of electorate
 Candidate (for or against)
 Single Issue/Philosophy
 Run, do
not walk from someone who thinks
we should hold voter registration drives.

 But why?

• They are not registered  they DON’T CARE.

• If registered, they won’t vote  they DON’T CARE.

• Who knows who they’ll vote for  they DON’T

CARE.
 Candidates
or issues can come along and
convert DON’T CARES to CARES.

 Recent Examples?

 Nice – they don’t like confrontation.

 Get along with people – apt to compromise.

 Most have an ideological position – but are

swayed when they believe they can lose an
election.
Rare leaders pull against by attracting
support (Ron Paul, Jesse Helms).
• Politics is understandable because
politicians are understandable.

• Politics is predictable because

politicians are predictable.

• You can control politics because

you can control politicians.

• Control their environment, and

you control them.
 Force Comes in Two Flavors:

 Pleasure or Pain
 If you show up to work on time do you get
a raise?
Voting to protect liberty is not an
extraordinary accomplishment, but
standard operating procedure. . .

 This is why we don’t give praise and

political pleasure…

They will use your praise and endorsement forever . . . 1890

PLEASURE PAIN

 Good press  Bad press

 Public praise  Public embarrassments
 Being center of attention  Being ignored
 Endorsements/Attacking  Denouncements
opponent  Challengers (esp. Primary)
 No challengers in elections  Political party opposition
 Volunteers  No volunteers
 Manipulating the rules  Lack of money
 MONEY  BIGGEST – Angry VOTERS
• For their campaign
• For their district
 By doing as little as possible

 Claiming action when they really did

nothing
• Resolutions
• Task Force
• Citizen’s Corner
• Making vague public statements /
pronouncements
INERTIA

INERTIA
 Inertia plays into your hands.

 Inertia kills you when….

 You are on offense.

 The system is designed to move slowly or

not at all.
 Force them to go on the record with roll call
votes.
 Force them to sponsor real bills with teeth.
 Demand immediate action.
 Connect the legislative season to the
electoral season.
 Politicians
must know that there are
consequences for bad political behavior.
 We must mobilize (utilize the 3% + 1
Principle).
 Embrace the fact that politics is numbers
game.
 Acceptthe reality that if you can’t say
something mean about a politician, don’t
say anything at all.
 “The extremes defines the middle.”
If a member of the political class tells you
how to behave or how politics works –
Ask yourself –

If I believe them and do what they say…

“how does it benefit them?”
They want you to go away!
They want you to go away
– and they want to give
you as little as possible.
1. Ignore you
2. Try to sound reasonable
3. Whine
4. Threaten
5. Have others threaten you
6. Buy you
7. They may vote your way
“I am with you, you don’t understand.”
“I’ve got to appear reasonable.”
“Governor won’t sign/Courts will kill it.”
“The political reality is . . .”
“You will get something worse.”
“You are the only one talking about this.”
“You haven’t done your homework, let me
explain, you don’t understand this issue.”
 Credibility: “That’s not how we do things
here.”
 Bargaining: “Do that again and I’ll vote
against you/the issue.”
 Lawsuits and Investigations: “I’ll get ___ to
look into your organization.”
 Never work here again: “You are only
hurting your own cause.” “I’ll tell your board
just how ineffective you are.”
 Invitations
for dinners or events.
 Parking places.
 Being on advisory committee.
 Work on my campaign staff (job offer).
 If you want a friend in politics---get a dog.
 Personal relationships with politicians are
dangerous and usually end in disaster for our
cause
 Ditto for the political class and other accessed-
based organizations.
 Working relationship ≠ Friendship
 Only exception may be with long-time
champion.
• We will get to this later today . . .
GAME OVER
You have now traded your
power for ACCESS
 They’re getting political intelligence.

 Swaying you with the schmooze.

When you sit to dine with a ruler, note well
what is before you, and put a knife to your
throat if you are given to gluttony. Do not
crave his delicacies, for that food is deceptive.
Proverbs 23:1-3
 Instead
of being the grassroots’
representative to the politician, telling
him what he must do…

 You become the politician’s

representative to the grassroots,
telling us what we must settle for.
