The UPS shall provide high quality conditioned AC power to the equipment loads. The UPS
shall automatically provide continuity of electrical power, in case of failure of mains (AC utility
source) within the defined limits. The system consists of a solid state Converter with Battery
Charger, PWM Inverter, Automatic static bypass transfer circuit, and integral maintenance
bypass circuit.
APPLICATION AREAS:
Two UPS are connected in parallel redundant configuration. The outputs of two systems are
paralleled paralleling unit to form common ac bus.
In case of failure of one UPS, the entire load is transferred to the other one. Thus both the UPS
should be able to provide 100% load individually.
In case of failure of both the systems (mains-fail & battery-low) the load is automatically
transferred to bypass source via static switch without any interruption.
On rectification of the fault or mains resumption, the load is retransferred. Both UPS are backed
by common battery.
The DC output voltage of Rectifier is fed to buck boost converter and inverter. The Buck Boost
converter operates with two modes,
1) Buck Charger
2) Boost converter
During normal operation i.e. when input power supply is present and it is within the specified
limits, the buck chargers which operate with switching frequency about 5 KHz. provides ripple
free regulated voltage to battery bank using IGBT (VQM5), inductor (L5) and DC capacitor Bank
(C7). The state of the battery is monitored and accordingly float, boost voltage selection is done
automatically along with current limit protection by buck boost converter card. The extended
boost mode facility is provided for initial commissioning of the batteries.
In case of input supply failure or any abnormal condition at input the booster converter is turned
on instantaneously by the buck boost converter card to provide controlled DC voltage to inverter
to get uninterrupted inverter output to the load. The booster converter boosts the battery voltage
using inductor (L5), IGBT (VQM5) and DC capacitors bank (C8). The booster converter
operates with switching frequency
Battery bank is connected at buck boost converter output via Semiconductor Fuse (F4,F4A),
Booster Choke (L5) & Battery Breaker (Q2).
1) Rectifier Operation
The buck boost control card (PB1) takes care of battery operation in addition to rectifier control
operation, card receive control supply 20-0-20V DC from Power Supply Card (PB74). The Three
Phase Synchronization Signal given to Mains feedback Card
When Input Breaker (Q1) is switched on, the time delay circuit starts counting a preset time
interval approx. 10 secs. This is provided for various circuits to stabilize before pulses are
applied to the thyristors.
When timer blocking is released, the rectifier voltage starts rising depending on the error voltage
generated by proportionate integrator comparing DC voltage feedback and set reference
voltage. The reference voltage setting for rectifier is adjusted such that if DC voltage exceeds
600V then only controlled rectifier comes into picture to protect DC capacitor and other circuitry.
1. Mains Fail
2. Over temperature
3. Input UV/OV
4. Charger OV
5. Input single phasing
6. Input Fuse fail
7. Rectifier OV
8. Heat sink over temperature
If transient fluctuation in input grid voltage exceeds + 10% for maximum period of one minute
then rectifier will gets block and inverter will be fed by Battery.
1. Mains Fail
2. Over Temperature
3. Input UV/OV
4. Charger OV
5. Input Single phasing
In case of any abnormal condition at input like UV/OV, etc. DC Voltage on DC bus is monitored
& if it falls below 410V DC immediately booster converter is turned ON. Buck charger output
feedback voltage is also sensed with high precision resistor divided to prevent any high voltage
being applied to battery bank in case of charger converter device failure. Adequate precaution is
taken to ensure highest reliabilities of this device.
Depending upon the state of the battery which is sensed by Battery current feedback from CT
(TA1) the buck charger selects float / boost mode of charging for batteries (Float to boost mode
selected at @ 70% of battery current limit.
The Mains feedback card (PB82) senses mains voltage, regulated DC voltage of Rectifier,
Battery Voltage, Booster Current using Current transformer (TA2). Under input abnormal
condition i.e. mains fail, input uv/ov, input spp, etc. or if DC bus voltage falls below 410V the
booster converter is turned on. The Current mode PWM based 3842 IC provides PWM signals
to driver card (PB2) which in turn provides amplified gate-emitter signals to booster IGBT
(VQM5). The booster voltage is controlled by sensing DC voltage on DC Bus. The booster
current limit protection is provided by sensing booster current through Current Transformer
(TA2). The booster converter is blocked under following conditions.
•Rectifier OV / Booster OV
•Battery Low
•Heat Sink Over temperature
When mains fails or DC voltage goes below 410V, Booster starts & DC voltage is maintained at
430V. When mains resumes again at 470V DC, Booster is blocked & charger comes up When
charger trips by DC OV, even if mains fails Booster comes up without affecting load at the
output.
DC bus voltage i.e. output of Boost converter feedback and monitoring signal are sensed with
high precision resistor divider separately & redundancy is ensured for safety of DC Capacitors.
RECT.OV setting is done at 700V DC and booster OV is set at 750V DC. If rectifier & Booster
voltage exceeds beyond this limit Booster converter gets blocked due to over voltage .Possibility
of booster OV is a remote condition. This OV is provided for safety of DC capacitor & devices
used in Inv. Bridge.
Battery low setting is done . Below this voltage Boost converter is blocked to avoid battery
discharging.
Nominal heat sink temp. of buck-boost is set at <65 degree Cel. while OT setting is done at 90
degree C. If temperature exceeds beyond this limit, Booster converter gets block due to over
temperature .Possibility of over temperature is a remote condition
In modulator section the error signal (sine wave) generated by control amplifier section is
compared with carrier wave (Triangular waveform) and its inter sections results into PWM
pulses which are given to Driver Card. 28V DC Control supply is given to Driver Converter Card
(PB8) which gives isolated supply to driver card. Driver card (PB18-PB18A) receives PWM
signals from Inverter Control Card which are amplified and given to IGBT of Inverters.
Transfer and re-transfer operation is controlled by sensing output voltage and its
synchronization with bypass source. This card generates block/de-block signal for Static Switch
provides in Inverter path (VTT1) and in bypass path (VTT2). Gate / Cathode firing signals are
given to STSW’s by Static Switch Control Card (PB24,24A).
Electronic Static Switch
Static switches are provided in Inverter (VTT1) and in bypass path (VTT2). The static switch in
bypass line provides an alternative power during overload or UPS fault condition.
Transfer: If the internal control system detects a fault in the UPS module while it is supporting
the load, the load will transferred to bypass static switch. If the transfer takes place in sync.
Condition transfer time will be less than 5 ms whereas in no sync. Mode it is less than 20 ms.
Retransfer: Retransfer of load (Bypass to Inverter) is automatic operation if the UPS is healthy
and synchronized with the bypass.
Manual transfer/retransfer: Test transfer switch (S4) enables the load change over from
Inverter to Bypass & Retransfer load (Bypass to Inverter) only when the UPS is healthy and
synchronized with the bypass.
Maintenance bypass MCCB enables the load change over from Inverter / static bypass to
maintenance bypass. To achieve no break change over defined sequence of operation has to
be followed.
Operation of manual bypass input MCCB and inverter output MCCB provides total UPS system
free for maintenance. To achieve no break change over following sequence shall be followed.
1) Load transfer from Inverter to static bypass with test transfer switch (S4)
2) Switch ‘ON’ maintenance bypass MCCB
3) Switch ‘OFF’ inverter output MCCB
Data monitoring system is operated through data logger card (PB9). Data logger card comprises
of following sections.
1) Analog Measurement section
2) Control section to provide blocking signal to inverter control card
3) Fault detection and display
4) Computer Interfacing
For analog measurement section feedbacks are derived from inverter control card (PB7).

c) Output Overload
d) Over temperature
RS 232,RS485 serial interface is provided for computer interface, through PC interface card
(PB10,PB151)
Control supply for all PCBs and other circuitry is generated from regulated DC power supply
using DC-DC Converters (CN1). DC voltage is applied to DC-DC Converters via fuses. The
mains is fed to CN1 through Isolation Transformer (TV4) so that +28V control supply is available
to UPS control circuitry as soon as mains is available.
