Press Release October 14, 2010

Peace and Development Teams deployed in Davao del Norte

Fourteen Peace and Development Teams (PDT) were deployed in the

different barangays of Asuncion, Davao del Norte on Monday, October 11, 2010. In
Kapalong, Davao del Norte nine Peace and Development Teams were also
deployed on same day. The local government units of said municipality warmly
accepted the program of the military to deploy personnel in their respective locality
for the conduct of peace and development outreach programs (PDOP).

The objective of the program is to help uplift the living condition of the people
in the area so that they could not be infiltrated and recruited by the CPP/NPA/NDF
by exploiting socio-economic issues that affect them.

The deployment of PDTs is supported by the local government units as the

soldiers can also contribute in addressing pressing problems that local communities
are facing. Last month, PDTs deployed in Mawab and Nabunturan under the
supervision of the 66th Infantry Battalion immersed with the communities by
launching the dengue awareness and prevention advocacy program through clean
up drives. The 71st Infantry Battalion launched the PDOP with a blood letting activity
in coordination with the LGU and the PNRC.

Positive feedbacks were gathered as a result of PDT deployment. In Mawab

town, ten NPA members have been convinced to come out in the open and return to
the folds of the law since September this year. Illegal logging activities were checked
and crimes were reduced to some extent, based on the observation of local
government officials and residents.

The peace and development teams, in collaboration and cooperation with

local government offices, non government organizations, and people’s organizations,
are gaining headway in project implementations. The projects aimed to augment the
efforts of the government and different sectors to answer the basic needs and, in the
long run, increase the quality of life of the populace.
