Edwards, Martha E. "Attachment, Mastery, and Interdependence: A Model of Parenting

Processes." Family Process, vol. 41, no. 3, 2002, pp. 389-404. ProQuest,

In this article, Edwards uses different professors’ research to answer the question about

how there’s different parenting strategies and components that affect children’s

individuality positively. Edwards expresses that interdependence for their child is the

main goal to every parent.she explains there are 3 main components: “developing a

secure attachment, promoting striving and mastery, and guiding the child to

interdependence”(Edwards 2002). However, the part that relates to my capstone is when

Edwards describes that having interdependence can make a child feel like they can

contribute something worthwhile in other people’s life and feel like they belong. I wanted

to know how being kind can affect a person.

In the article, Smith list and describes different groups of people that have a problem

fitting in or face oppression in the world and counselors should deal with people more in

depth. Smith uses resources from different kinds associations and professors and

examines widely different kinds of prospective on the matter. Smith strongly believes

that every different group like, heterosexual, people who suffer from racial discrimination

and people that get ‘attacked’ for being poor or not incredibly rich, should all be handled

differently and with more care. This relates to my capstone because it states different

reasons why some people might isolate themselves or feel too insecure to speak up and

spread kindness. Being different that what society thinks is “normal” can cause people to

become quiet and scared and this idea can help with my capstone because it gives me

ideas on who to talk too.

Hong, Hana, and Hana Hong. “Nicer People Are More Prone to Depression.” Reader's Digest,

Reader's Digest, 9 Jan. 2019 https://www.rd.com/health/wellness/nicer-people-more-prone-to-

depression

This article describes why being nice might have a negative effect on people and

answers the questions ‘why do people tend to not want to be nice?’. After reading

different studies on this matter, Hong found out more facts about why this happens and

uses evidence to explain the scientific reason why nice people might be more prone to

depression or mental health. According to her research and test, people who are nice

experience guilt, extreme empathy and stress and thus connects to a very sensitive and

deep part of the brain. This relates to my capstone because it explains that people stop

being nice because it has more of a negative effect than good. People are scared that

being nice leads to getting hurt or used so they try to act tough and heartless as a way to

guard themselves.

“The Difference between Being Nice & Being Kind.” Owen's Blog, Owen Fitzpatrick , 3 Oct.

2016, https://blog.owenfitzpatrick.com/difference-nice-kind/

In this article, Owen discuss the main idea that being nice and being kind are two

different things. He uses people’s books and other published writing in this article to

convey the two ideas being different. Being kind means actually caring for other people

and being nice is just saying polite things to others. According to Owen, you can be kind

to someone and still be mean but not the other way around. This relates to my senior

capstone because it expresses that being nice isn’t good enough or not exactly my goal. I

wanted other people to care for others and being nice is just the first step. However the

author states that people can’t really learn to be kind, and that it comes from people who

truly want to be kind.
