INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

MORPHED: A 2D Animal Lifecycle Game is a color-merge puzzle mobile game to be

developed on Android platform that will cater children ages 6 to 12 to help them enhance their

knowledge in science in a fun way. It will consist of three levels namely: Land, Water, and Air

that represents three different habitats of species that will each have five different animals

where their developmental stage or lifecycle will be explored. The player will act as a Biologist

on the gameplay that will witness the different stages of metamorphosis of common animals.

To progress with the stages, the player must fulfill the requirements of the game including

completing match-three puzzles to reveal the next stage of lifecycle per animal. While

completing the puzzle, facts about the specific species that was selected will be shown. Finally,

a random set of questions in the form of a mini quiz will be presented after completing a level

to test what the users have learned.

answer
Children are not completely familiar with the stages of lifecycle or metamorphosis of

different species. The study aims to answer the following specific problems:

1. Lack of information about a specific growth stage of a certain species;

2. Lack of information on the habitats of various species; and

3. An edutainment application about lifecycle of species does not exist.

1.4 Objective of the Study

The main objective of the study is to develop an Android game entitled “MORPHED: A

2D Animal Lifecycle Game” that will help children with familiarization on the lifecycle of

different species.

The study aims to meet the following specific objectives:

1. The system will have a growth module to view the stages of lifecycle, as well as

information, of different species;

2. The system will have a navigation module to show the habitats of different

species;

3. The system will have a match-three puzzle module to make the system

entertaining while gaining knowledge; and

4. The system will also have a quiz module to test the acquired knowledge of the

user about the lifecycles of different species.

1.5 Significance of the Study

The study is deemed significant to the following:

Elementary Students – these children can acquire knowledge about the stages and

lifecycle of species in general while enjoying it.

Teachers – the system can be used as an alternative approach to teaching their students

about stages of lifecycle of different species.

Future Researchers – the future researchers will benefit from the study as it may serve

as a reference for similar studies and aid them in their future research.

1.6 Scope and Limitations

The scope of the study will focus on the development of MORPHED: A 2D Animal

Lifecycle Game, an Android application that will show the different stages of lifecycle or

metamorphosis of animals of different animals. It will have three main stages that will

represent three different places of habitats of these animals. It will provide information to

impart knowledge to users while completing a color-merge puzzle game on each stages of

lifecycle. This information will be used at the end of each habitat levels to test the acquired

knowledge of the user. It will also provide a separate module to show a book of different

animals that they completed on the puzzles and their lifecycle as a collection shall they wish to

review them. A separate module for quizzes on the main menu will also be created so the users

can retry the questions to test their learning.

There will be limitations set on the system. The game will be offline so it won’t support

connecting to the Internet. There will be no support for game controller peripherals and the

users cannot adjust the graphics of the application. There will only be one player profile and

will only accommodate a single player to continue with the progress of the game. Lastly, the
researchers will not upload it in Play Store, thus no maintenance and updates will be made to

the game thereafter.

1.7 Definition of Terms

Adobe Photoshop is the world’s most advanced digital imaging software, used for

powerful and creative control for 2D and 3D image manipulation and compositing, video

editing, and image analysis. (Photoshop CC / Common Questions, 2016). It will be used by the

proponents to create the main menu and in-game design and layout.
Android is an operating system for smartphones and other devices based on Linux

kernel, developed by Android, Inc., that acts as a translator between you and your gadget

(Schmidt, 2016). It will be the platform to be used to run the system. The application will not

run on Windows and IOS.

Android Phones and Tablets is a tablet-sized PC that runs on Google's Android

operating system (OS) which include almost all the key features found in a regular tablet PC,

including office applications, games, Web browsers and many other programs. These will be

used to demonstrate and run the application.

Android Application a mobile software application developed for use on devices

powered by Google's Android platform. It is the application installed on the android phone and

tablet to run the system.

Android SDK Software Development Kit is an open source toolset offered by Google

to developers wanting to build and publish apps for mobiles running with Android OS

(Bathelot, 2012). It will be used to build the system and create the necessary tools for the app.
Android Studio is the official integrated development environment (IDE) for Google's

Android OS, built on JetBrains' IntelliJ IDEA software and designed specifically for Android

development (Meet Android Studio, 2018). It offers a variety of features that enhance

productivity when building Android apps.

C# is an object-oriented programming language from Microsoft that aims to combine

the computing power of C++ with the programming ease of Visual Basic. C# is based on C++

and contains features similar to those of Java (Rouse, 2007). It is one of the languages available

in Unity that will be used by the proponents to build scripts for object interaction.
Java Development Kit (JDK) is a software development environment used for

developing Java applications and applets. It includes the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), an

interpreter/loader (java), a compiler (javac), an archiver (jar), a documentation generator

(javadoc) and other tools needed in Java development (Preethi, 2017).

Unity 3D is a powerful cross-platform 3D engine and a user-friendly development

environment. (Zamojc, 2012). It has several features that will make the development easier:
 Development of builds accessible in different platforms
 Runtime Player
 Live Editing in Runtime
 Assets Store
 Colliders, Rigid Bodies, and Kinematics
