I. Introduction

Brief Background

According to Anti-Cybercrime Operations Division chief PS Supt Michael Angelo

Zuñiga (2017), "Cyber bullying is the act of using digital media to be aggressive towards

other people that has an intention to persuade the victim and put them in an

embarrassing situation that could be seen by the others, family, friends or worst, by

everyone."

This statement was said as the cases of the cyber bullying soar and it is alarming

because of the rapid increase of suicide cases. The harassment that occurs through the

digital media and internet is different in some key concepts. The act of bullying could be

easier as it allows a sense of distance between the bully and the victim, the two parties.

Cyber bullying could also hide the identity of the abuser or to remain anonymous and the

small chance of repercussion also means a bully more likely to do crueler things.

Sometimes, most of the people becomes the victim, if they don't have prior knowledge

concerning this issue and it could also lead to a wrong outlook or perspective towards

the things that cyber bullying may cause, if it is prohibited by the law and the cyber

bullying itself.

Objectives of the study

The goal of the study is to identify the knowledge and interpretation of the students

regarding the advanced type of bullying, which is cyber bullying. Also, the research aims

to raise the awareness of cyber bullying as an unacceptable form of behavior with school
management, teachers, students, parents/guardians, etc. With this, students might

obtain proper use of Social Media and know how to take action about cyber bullying

Significance of the study

This section discusses the importance of the study to society, the country, the

government, the community and the thesis-dissertation. The results of the study will be a

great benefit to the following:

Municipal Office This study will be beneficial to them to construct strategies and

methods on how to lessen the cases of cyber bullying.

School Personnel This study will give them a hint to improve their motivational

and teaching materials, techniques or methods and skills in open forum to students who

really need their guidance.

Parents This study will help the parents to be aware about the kind of attitude of

their child. It will give them a hint on how they would help and encourage their child to

avoid bullying.

Students The findings of this study will encourage them to change their attitude

towards other people and it will serve as a medicine to cure the minds of every individual

to become open-minded about the consequences of their action.

Future Researchers The results of this study will make use them as a basis and

comparison to their future studies.

Related Literature

Cyber bullying involves the use of information and communication technologies, such

as e-mail, cell phone and pager text messages, instant messaging, defamatory personal

Web sites, and defamatory online personal polling Web sites, to support deliberate,

repeated, and hostile behavior by an individual or group that is intended to harm others.

According to Willard (2004), cyber bullying can take different forms, with the main

forms ranging from flaming, to harassment, to cyber stalking. What exactly constitutes

an act of cyber bullying is not always easy to define. Generally, the definition of cyber

bullying depends upon the viewpoint of those who are defining it.

Shariff (2008), states that when we define a behavior, it is important to remember it

as an action that takes place in a particular context, at a particular time, with various

influences operating on the individuals who take the action. This is particularly applicable

to the issue of cyber bullying. In order for any cyber bullying policy to be established and

effectively implemented by school systems, members must recognize and address

issues related to cyber bullying without alienating those we are trying to reach – the

youth Bullying as a phenomenon was not well-researched until recent years. In the

1970s, a study in Norway was conducted about the harms of school-aged bullying by

Olweus, who is commonly recognized as the pioneer in school-aged bullying research.

His in-depth study of the phenomenon of school-aged bullying actually was the first.

Olweus (1993) defined bullying as “when (a student) is exposed, repeatedly and

over-time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other students” (p. 9). He went

on to define negative actions as “when someone intentionally inflicts, or attempts to

inflict, injury or discomfort upon another – basically what is implied is the definition of

aggressive behavior” (p. 9).

Willard (2007) has since then redefined cyber bullying as being cruel to others by

sending or posting harmful material or engaging in other forms of social cruelty using the

Internet or other digital technologies, such as cell phones. Young people may be the

target of cyber bullying from others or may engage in such harmful behavior. Direct

cyber bullying involves repeatedly sending offensive messages. More indirect forms of

cyber bullying include disseminating denigrating materials or sensitive personal

information or impersonating someone to cause harm (p.10).

The bully is the key player in any incident of bullying. Research shows that bullies

are typically male, at the same age or older than their victims, stronger than their victims,

and generally hold some level of popularity on the school campus (Chan, 2006;

Coloroso, 2003; Nansel et al., 2001). It is interesting that those who bully usually have a

large group of friends and have leadership traits that others are attracted to in a group

even though the bully exhibits antisocial and other aggressive behaviors towards others

According to the results above, the researchers could say that the Grade 8-

Amorsolo has sufficient knowledge concerning the issue of cyber bullying. But as you

can observe in the results in number 3 and 10, there were some points that their

understanding towards the statements were different. In statement number 3, stating

that making fun of people on any platform of social media could hurt his/her feeling is

okay, because almost half of the respondents disagreed on it. It shows that some person

used to got make fun of other people and thought that it is okay for there’s no any force

that hinders the people to do it and used to be part of their daily lives in the cyber world.

Lastly, in statement number 10, stating that cyber bullying chase the child in the safest

environment. It only means that this improper behavior must not be pursued by children

or students for it will not be beneficial at all.

Recommendation

In order to achieve the objectives of the study, the following may acknowledge
these advices and commendations:

and behavior around social media.

5. Future Researchers it is recommended for them to fulfill their future study by

using this research as a basis and comparison.
