It is old in that man has concerned himself with specific prob- lems in the ocean for thousands of years, Ship building, prevention of beach erosion, and can struction of offshore structures are just a few of the specialties that have been developed by engineers over the ages. Until recently, however, these ef- forts tended to be restricted to specific areas Within the past decade an attempt has been made to coordinate the activities of all technologists in ocean work, calling the entire field “ocean engi neering.” Here we have its newness. Ocean Engineering: A Wiley Series has been cre November 1972 ated to introduce engineers and scientists t9 ious areas of ocean engineering. Books in this serie: are so written as to enable engineers and scientis:s ‘easily to learn the fundamental principles and tech= nigues of a specialty other thaa their own, books can also serve as textbooks in advanced un- dergraduate and introductory graduate courses. The topics to be covered in this series include ocean engineering wave mechanics, marine corrosion. coastal engineering, dynamics of marine vehicles offshore structures, and geotechnical or seafloor en- gineering. We think that this series fils a great need im the literature of ocean technology. The MicHarL. E, MeCoxauck, Eorror RaMESWAR BHATTACHARYYA, ASSOCIATE EDI1oK
