Westly, Erica. “Socializing with Youth Improves the Elderly's Health, Life Span.” Scientific
In this article, Westly emphasizes that the presence of the youth improves the elderly’s health
causing them to live a longer healthy life. The author is providing scientific evidence though the
means of clinical studies. She explains that biologist, Chun-Fang Wu, from the University of
Iowa conducted an experiment on mammals where they found that young fruit flies doubled the
lifespan of flies linked to ALS by living thirty more days than the regular two weeks and
becoming more physically fit which also helps them live longer. She also makes a point by
explaining that Sharon, a psychiatrist from the University of Arizona, has a clinic where college
students part take in exercising with the elderly. This results in counterbalancing cognitive
decline, which means less problems with memory, language, and thinking, and it also can
improve moods. This is relevant to my capstone project because it reflects the good effect the

In this article, it informs you a lot about volunteering, what it is, its characteristic, and it’s
advantages and disadvantages. The article provides scientific research to support its evidence. It
explains that volunteering is the act of dedicating your time for free to organizations and such.
Sometimes when volunteering some organizations will require you do it for a certain amount of
time and there are times where you have pay your own expenses but that rarely occurs. It
explains that studies have shown that volunteering makes it easier for you to get a job since you
are getting experience and learning new skills. The only disadvantages of volunteering is the fact
that you don’t get paid. Deciding where to volunteer can depend on the career your planning to
choose. This article is relevant in my capstone journey because it shows me the benefits I will

In the article, by Stanford University it explains that interaction between the elderly and the
youth is beneficial for both parties. The article’s evidence was conducted by Stanford research.
In order to support that interaction between them is beneficial for both Laura Carstensen, a
psychology professor at Stanford conducted a research. She found that elders have “distinctive
qualities to meet the needs of the youth’’especially for underprivileged children because they
need emotional skills to succeed and elders are able to help them with that because teens can lack

thinking, etc. In return, their interactions help elders receive emotional satisfaction, it helps them
view society in a much younger perspective, and betters their physical health. The article
emphasizes that a very important way for this connection to occur is through volunteering. This

www.optimalhomecare.com/five-things-older-generations-can-learn-from-youth
In the article, Chad Fincher for Optimal Home Care explain 5 things the elderly can learn
when spending time with the youth. The author does not provide sources but rather bases
information through his own opinions and beliefs. The five things the elderly can learn from the
youth is the use of technology, open mindness, activeness, appreciating moments, and how to
play. Nowadays everything is electronic based so the youth can educate the elderly on
technology so they can be in communication more with one another and other people. Compared
to older generations today's youth is a lot more open minded and so they can teach the elderly to
be less conservative on important factors like education, race, politics, etc. The youth helps
elderly be more active this helps them be more healthy. Technology helps capture special
moments and elders appreciate looking back on these moments. Today's kids can teach seniors to
play by being silly and learning to enjoy themselves. This article is relevant to my capstone

illennials.html.
In this article, Cole delineates what baby boomers are finally starting to understand about
millenials. The author, Nicolas Cole provides examples for each of the reasons so it’s easier to
understand each reason. Older generations are starting to learns that working remote is
successful. It’s better to be paid for the job you do rather than the hour. Social media isn’t
wasting valuable time because taking pictures for fun can turn into a career that you can actually
get paid for. Traveling and getting to know the world is way easier than older generations time
because of how technology has evolved. Elders are learning that resumes aren’t everything and
it’s better to create your brand with things, like websites. They’re also learning that it’s possible
to start a business at a young age. Saving money is crucial because you never know what might
happen. Seniors are understanding that its ok to ask the younger generations for help with things
like, technology. This article is relevant to my capstone because it shows me that maybe at the
end of my project, me connecting with elders can benefit them in the end.
