CONVENTIONS
Course contents: 1.1Conventions as per IS:962 – 1989,
1.1.1 Purpose & importance of I.S. 962
1.1.2 Types of Lines- Visible line, Center line, Hidden line, Section line, Dimension
line, Extension line, Pointers, Arrow heads or dots
1.2 Symbols – Graphical symbols for doors and windows. Materials used in civil
engg. Construction. Abbreviations, scales for various types of drawings.
1.2.1 Layout and interpretation of available prints of residential buildings.

Introduction:
Conventions is the language of engineer or architect with the help of which he can
represent various details in building drawing. Conventions are used for those units
which can not directly represent in the drawing. I.S. 962-1989 is used for conventions
in building drawing.

 The following sizes of letters or text used in Building Drawing
i) for main title :- 6mm x 6mm to 10mmx10mm
ii) for subtitle and headings :- 4mmx4mm to 5mmx5mm
iii) for notes, dimension, construction details, schedule
:-2mmx2mm to 3mmx3mm

3. Which I.S. Code is used for Building Drawing?


 Indian Standard specification I.S. 962-1989 is used for Architectural and
Building drawing.

4. What are the different scales are used in building drawing.

 Scale used for different drawings given as follows.


Plan ______________1:100 or 1:50
Elevation __________1:100 or 1:50
Section ____________1:100 or 1:50
Site Plan ___________1:200
Location plan _______1:1000 or 1:500
For Showing detailed drawing __1:10 or 1:25

Building drawing is required for various purposes such as Technical approval,
Structural design, and it is also required for various personnel for Execution of
work.
To provide copy of building drawing to each of them. Only to produce
number of copies for given purpose
