Swimming is not just a skill in which one prevents himself from drowning, but is about more than
just the physical or technical ability to survive (Sutcliffe, Terry & Crowther, 2016). As a 21st
century skill, pre-service physical education teachers were taught swimming for coaching and
teaching purposes. However, some of them do not fully acquire the content knowledge and skills
needed. The study was conducted to determine the knowledge and skills of pre-service teachers in
swimming. Using descriptive study, a random sample of fifty physical education majors
participated in the study. Data were gathered using validated knowledge test and skill scale.
Results revealed that the knowledge of pre-service teachers in swimming was Above Average,
while the swimming skill was Acquired. In addition, there is no significant relationship between
their knowledge and skills in swimming. Further, interventions were necessary for those who failed
the said competences.
