COLLOCATIONS
A collocation is two or more words that often go together, like "hard work" or "make a
mistake". Collocations sound "right" or "natural" to native speakers.
Look at these examples:
natural English... unnatural English...
the fast train the quick train
fast food quick food
a quick shower a fast shower
a quick meal a fast meal
There are several different types of collocation made from combinations of verb, noun, adjective etc. We will
focus on: -verb + preposition. Examples:
✓ look at (She is looking at a photo.)
✓ listen to (They are listening to the radio.)
✓ pay for (Your shoes are nice. How much did you pay for them?)

AUXILIARY VERBS
Auxiliary verbs are also known as 'helping verbs'.
The three most common auxiliary verbs are:
be, do and have

HAVE Have Has Had

WH- QUESTIONS WORDS


Question words are also called wh- questions because they include the letters 'W' and 'H'.
STRUCTURE

Negative sentences
DO/DOES/DID + NOT. You can use contractions.
✓ She doesn’t (does NOT) play volleyball. She plays basketball.
✓ We didn’t (did NOT) travel in the morning.

Yes/No questions and short answers


Question: Auxiliary verb + subject + verb + rest of the sentence. Answer: yes/no + subject + auxiliary verb
(positive or negative).
✓ Do they have a party? Yes, they do / No, they don’t.
✓ Did she study for the exam? Yes, she did / No, she didn’t.

Information questions
WH- question word + Auxiliary verb + subject + verb + rest of the sentence.
✓ Where do they have a party? They have a party in the company they work for.
✓ How did she study for the exam? She solved 20 exercises from the workbook.
