System description

1. The vehicle speed sensor provides the tachograph with vehicle speed signals (in coded form) from the
gearbox. The coding means that any possible attempt to manipulate the speed signal would be
discovered and recorded. The speed sensor and the tachograph work together (are paired up) as a
mutually dependent pair. Because of this neither the speed sensor nor the tachograph can be replaced

without the tachograph being recalibrated by an authorised workshop.


2. The tachograph consists of:
1. Display
2. Control buttons
3. Card reader (two off)
4. Printer
5. Internal memory
The internal memory is used to store information during a normal operational year. The information
stored is:
1. Some vehicle parameters
2. All driver related activities
3. Fault information
4. Vehicle speed information (only for the most recent 24 hours of driving time)
The tachograph computes the vehicle speed and driven distance and continuously updates and displays
the values. The tachograph can also send signals to other systems needing information on the vehicle
speed and driven distance. The tachograph sends information to the vehicle control unit via the SAE
J1939 link. In addition, the tachograph sends speed information in the form of a frequency signal to the
vehicle control unit. If the information from the tachograph on the SAE J1939 link is lost, the vehicle
control unit calculates the speed using the frequency signal. This means that the instrument will show
speed but that the driven distance in the instrument display will not be updated.
3. The vehicle control unit receives the vehicle speed signal and driven distance from the tachograph and
sends them out on the SAE J1939 link.
4. The instrument receives information from the SAE J1939 link and displays the vehicle speed and
driven distance.
5. Card (smartcard) is used to store information concerning the driver named on the card (information
for 28 days in arrears is stored).
6. Dynafleet receives information on driver activities from the tachograph.

Special tools for removing the tachograph

Card (smartcard)

A card is required to be able to use the tachograph (also called smartcard). The card is the same size as a
credit card. Information on the card owner is shown on the front of the card. There is a data chip on the back
of the card which stores information on the driver and the driver activities (driving times, resting times,
over-speeding etc.).

There are four types of cards:

Driver card. A driver's personal card. The card stores information for approx. 28 days in arrears.
Workshop card for authorised workshop personnel for installation, calibration and downloading of
data as well a test driving. The card is used in combination with a PIN code.
Company card makes it possible for the company to lock, read and download data stored in the
tachograph.
Control card used by the authorities, e.g. the police, to carry out checks.

The driver card or the workshop card are used to register information on working time, speed and driven
distance. The cards are inserted in the card readers on the front of the tachograph. When a card has been
inserted and the vehicle is being driven, the card is locked into place. The card can only be removed when the
vehicle is at a standstill.

For security reasons, all workshop cards have a connected PIN code. The PIN code is personal and cannot be
transferred. The card and the PIN code must be kept in a secure place when they are not being used by
authorised personnel. If a wrong Pin code is entered five times in a row, the workshop card will become
invalid. Acquiring a new card is expensive both in terms of the cost of the actual card and the time that the
user cannot work with the tachograph.

Note: Take good care of cards. Do not bend cards. Make sure that the data chip is clean. Clean the data chip as required with soft
cloth. Any dirt entering the tachograph can substantially shorted its service life. Make sure also that the printer is always closed,
apart from when loading with paper.

Operation

Activation/cover opening

The tachograph is designed so that it can be used by two drivers. There are therefore two separate buttons for
driver and second driver/assistant. One button for selecting the respective driver's activity (1 or 2) and the
other for removing the respective card.

OK

OK is used to access the tachograph main menu.

The button is also used to select among the alternatives displayed for the different sub functions.

CANCEL

When CANCEL is pressed several times the display returns to the Activities menu. CANCEL is also used to
return to the previously used menu when a main menu sub function is active.

UP/DOWN

UP and DOWN are used to move up and down between the different menu alternatives. They are also used to
increase or decrease the values that are displayed (e.g. hours and minutes for the manual setting of the
activity).

Display

The display shows all the information the operator requires during a driving pass. The different screen images
are explained in the relevant places in the text below. Many of the images use symbols instead of text, or in
combination with text. For a complete list of symbols and explanations of them see Symbols.

Using the tachograph

Insertion/ejection of cards

To eject cards, press the button for the respective readers.

Note: If a card is already inserted, the question shown on the display must be answered before the card can be ejected.

Insert the card with the data chip inwards and upwards. Push the card in carefully.

Note: The vehicle driver shall always use card reader 1. The second driver shall always use card reader 2. If the second driver is to
drive the vehicle, the driver and the second driver must exchange card positions: the second driver's card must be ejected from card
reader 2 and inserted in card reader 1.

Note: When a card has been inserted, it can only be ejected from the reader when the vehicle is at a standstill.

PIN code & Logging in

If a workshop card is inserted in a card reader, a welcome text is displayed on the tachograph. The tachograph
then reads the workshop card and after a short time the workshop card number is displayed.A question about
how many digits the PIN number contains is asked. Select the number of digits using the UP/DOWN menu
button and press OK.Browse through the correct digits using UP/DOWN and confirm each digit using OK. If
an incorrect digit is entered use CANCEL to go back a step.

Printer/Type plate

The printer contains the printing mechanism and a roll of paper. It should always be kept closed apart from
when replacing the paper roll. When printing, the paper comes out at the top edge of the unit.

To replace the paper roll press the button to the right of the menu select buttons. This opens the unit and
allows the paper roll to be replaced.

Start/Stop printout

The following information can be printed out:

Driver information for a specific day, stored on the card


Driver information for a specific day, stored in the tachograph
Incidents and warnings, stored on the card
Incidents and warnings, stored in the tachograph
Technical data
Over-speeding

Go to main menu. Use UP and DOWN to select the required printout. Press OK to confirm your selection.
Use UP and DOWN to select the required type of printout. Press OK and follow the instructions on the
display to start the printout.

To cancel a printout press OK and answer the question do you want to cancel the printout using UP and
DOWN for yes or no and OK for confirmation.

The type plate is located at the bottom of the printer unit.

Menu system

Menu functions are only accessible when the vehicle is at a standstill.

Navigate between the different menus using menu buttons: UP/DOWN, OK and CANCEL.

UP/DOWN are used to move between the menus in each line. They are also used to increase or
decrease the values that are displayed (e.g. hours and minutes for the manual setting of the activity).
OK is used to move to the next menu. It is also used to select among alternatives that are displayed.
CANCEL is used to return to the top menu in the previous menu line. It is also used to not select
among alternatives that are displayed.

Several symbols are also used in the menus. See Symbols, for a more detailed explanation.

All tachographs use UTC time as the principal reference time. UTC is a counter that counts the seconds from
1 Jan 1970 and is comparable to Greenwich Mean Time. UTC time (Universal Time Coordinate) does not
change with summer and normal time.

Downloading of driving data

Downloading the driving data means that a copy, together with a digital security signature, of all or part of the
information in the tachograph or a card (smartcard) is saved. When data is downloaded from the tachograph,
all the contents of the memory shall be downloaded and then stored securely.

Use a workshop card and applicable programming tool.

Note: The workshop must ensure that data is only made available to those authorised to receive it.

Activation

A new tachograph is never activated. In non activated mode the unit is not fully operational. No data can be
stored in the tachograph; calibration data can be given without using a workshop card. If the tachograph is not
activated when it is connected, the production status symbol is displayed. A non activated tachograph is
activated automatically when a workshop card is inserted in one of the card readers and a valid PIN code is
entered. The display shows that activation is underway, when it is complete and whether it was successful or
not. If activation was unsuccessful the workshop card must be ejected from the card reader. The system
wiring and contacts can then be checked before inserting the workshop card again and a new activation
attempt begun.

Note: If a workshop card is inserted in the card reader but the vehicle speed sensor is not connected, the tachograph tries to pair up
with a speed sensor until the workshop card is ejected. A fault message is shown if activation and pairing up are unsuccessful.

Pairing up

When a vehicle speed sensor is connected to the tachograph for the first time, the speed sensor has to be
paired up with the tachograph. Pairing up can only be achieved using a valid workshop card in one of the card
readers. When a workshop card is inserted in a card reader and the correct PIN code is entered, the pairing up
process starts up automatically if a new speed sensor has been fitted and connected to the tachograph. The
display shows that pairing is underway, when the pairing up is completed and whether it was successful or
not. If the pairing up was unsuccessful, the workshop card must be ejected from the card reader. The system
wiring and contacts can then be checked before inserting the workshop card again and a new pairing up
attempt begun.

Calibration

Calibration must be done regularly because of the regulations concerning tachographs. The following aspects
can be modified through calibration:

In order to calibrated a tachograph a valid workshop card and an applicable programming tool are required;
see Tools. When a workshop card is inserted in one of the card readers and an applicable programming tool is
connected to the tachograph via the 6 pole contact, calibration can be carried out.

Repair of a tachograph occurs very seldom, as opening the tachograph is not permitted. A tachograph that has
been opened may not then be used. Faulty units can be removed and sent the the manufacturer for repair.
Before a tachograph is removed, all the information stored on the internal memory must be downloaded and
passed on to the vehicle owner. This is because all stored information is considered to be the vehicle owner's
property.

After calibration it is necessary to check that the correct values have been entered. Eject the workshop card
and print out the technical data.

Programming

Use a workshop card and applicable programming tool.

Documentation of work done by the workshop

A workshop must document and file all information about work done (installation, activation, calibration,
inspection, repair). Information on dates and witnesses when data is destroyed must be documented.

Seals

The vehicle speed sensor must be sealed at the gearbox. The sensor cable, however, not need be sealed
because the coded signal prevents it from being tampered with without detection.
The tachograph cover for the backup battery has a seal which must be replaced when the battery is replaced.
The tachograph frame is also sealed; this seal should never be broken.

Tachograph removal

An installed tachograph can be removed my inserting two special tools into the four holes at the front of the
tachograph.

Backup battery

The backup battery shall be replaced every second year by an authorised workshop.

Note: It is crucial that the power supply to the tachograph is not broken when the backup battery is being replaced.

Remove the tachograph using the special tools.


Remove the seal (4) for the screws (3) and remove the screws.
Open the battery cover (2).
Remove the battery (5) and carefully disconnect the contact (6).
Carefully fit the contact for the new battery and install the new battery.
Close the battery cover and ensure that the battery cables are not caught in any way.
Replace the screws and fit a new seal.
