Las crónicas del emocionante special comeback que My
Bloody Valentine están protagonizando por Europa
nos traían preocupantes avisos de eclosiones sónicas
indescriptibles y alguna que otra posible retirada del
contingente de primeras filas, incapaces de soportar el
impacto y con riesgo serio de pérdida auditiva.
Lo de anoche, sin llegar a cataclismo, fue de una fisici-
dad tan extrema que los fibers más aventurados queda-
ron vaciados tanto por dentro como por fuera. Un re-
volcón emocional de considerable calibre concentrado
especialmente en la recta final de la actuación de Kevin
Shields y los suyos.
Pero se puede epatar -y de qué modo- sin saturación y
reverberación. Ahí estaban South San Gabriel clavando
la banda sonora a un bello atardecer, Mika -soltándose
el pelo acompañado por hordas de enfervorecidos fans,
o los mismísimos Hot Chip, amos y señores del ritmo
en el escenario Fiberfib.com.
Y luego va y se nos acerca Róisín Murphy y todo parece
perder su sentido. Su mirada, entre etérea e irreal, nos
sitúa en un estado levitativo, de ruido blanco, de infinita
melancolía. Bufff…

The reviews coming out of the emotional special come-
back tour, currently being undertaken by My Bloody
Valentine across Europe, carried with them worrying
warnings of indescribable sonic bursts. Several talked
of fans being pulled out from the front, unable to bear
the impact and running a serious risk of hearing loss.
Last night’s performance, while not quite cataclysmic,
was of such extreme force that even the most harde-
ned fibers were left mentally and physically exhaus-
ted, with the most considerable blow to the senses co-
ming in the final moments of the set played by Kevin
Shields and co.
It is however possible to blow away an audience wi-
thout resorting to saturation and reverb. Some of tho-
se to pull this off were South San Gabriel who played
the soundtrack to the sunset, the unrestrained Mika
accompanied by the hordes of feverish fibers, and the
selfsame Hot Chip, masters of rhythm in the Fiberfib.
com tent.
And then to cap it all off, Róisin Murphy comes into
our midst and everything seems to lose its meaning.
Her gaze, between the ethereal and surreal, raises us
to a state of levitation, white noise and infinite melan-
choly. Wow…

¡Shhh! Entramos en la disco. Si no fuese por
la cercana pista del Fiberfib, la Silent Disco
de Red Bull sería realmente silenciosa. En la
pista de baile, todos llevan auriculares. Y hay
dos DJs que hacen bailar al público, que pue-
de escoger entre el Channel One o el Two,
dependiendo de si quiere una música más o
menos dura.
Si el público simplemente se deja llevar, el DJ
no lo tiene tan fácil: “No sabes quien baila con
tu música, viendo los movimientos y el ritmo
de la gente, tienes algunas pistas”, explica DJ
W, un veterano de las pistas silenciosas, aun-
que prefiere las convencionales, donde los
graves hacen vibrar los cuerpos que se agitan
con las mezclas del DJ.
En una Silent Disco “no hay que preparar
una sesión underground o experimental, hay
que buscar las canciones reconocibles”, ex-
plica DJ W. También resulta vital que los dos
DJ’s se escuchen mutuamente para pinchar
música diferente. “Yo suelo alternar cancio-
nes instrumentales y a capella. Y con muchos
scratches”, apunta este DJ malagueño que vive
en Madrid.
En su sesión de anoche pinchó música dis-
co, desde italodisco a clásicos de los 70 y 80.
El concepto de una fiesta silenciosa, con
cada persona aislada en su propio universo
musical, es algo que DJ W se planteaba des-
de siempre, “sobre todo para no molestar a
los vecinos”.

SILENT DISCO
Shh! It’s disco time. If Fiberfib weren’t so
close by, Red Bull’s Silent Disco would be
precisely that. Everyone wears earphones on
the dance floor. There are two DJs to get the
public going, and they can choose between
Channel One or Two, depending on how
hard they want their music. If the public
simply go with the flow, the DJ doesn’t have
it so easy: “You don’t know who’s dancing to
your music, though you get a few clues from
people’s movements and rhythm”, explains
DJ W, a veteran of silent discos, though he
prefers conventional ones, where the bass
line of the DJ’s mix rocks dancers to the
core.
In a Silent Disco “there’s no point preparing
an underground or experimental set, you
have to look for recognizable songs”, he ex-
plains. It’s also vital that the two DJs listen
to each other to make sure they don’t spin
the same tunes. “I tend to alternate between
instrumental songs and acapellas. With a lot
of scratching”, notes the DJ, who hails from
Malaga but lives in Madrid.
In last night’s set he played disco music,
from italodisco to 70s and 80s classic. The
idea of a silent disco, with everyone drifting
in their own private musical universe, is so-
mething in which DJ W has long shown an
interest, “above all to avoid disturbing the
neighbours”:

La culpa es de otro

El trip hop no tuvo la culpa de la oleada
de electrónica ñoña que lo sucedió en
las bandas sonoras vitales de treinta-
ñeros presuntuosos. En la música, son
demasiados los innovadores a quienes
no se les puede achacar los delitos de
sus descendientes. Ni Rage Against the
Machine son los responsables de la
invasión de aquello llamado numetal,
ni hay que pedirle cuentas a Kraftwerk
por la insufrible cantidad de chorradas
que llevamos soportando durante tres
décadas en nombre del techno.
Es como la discusión de los grandes
cocineros en España: no es que Adrià
lo haga mal, es que sus discípulos son
unos pelmazos. Tricky es un Ferran
Adrià del trip hop más hip hop, para
entendernos.
Tricky, Massive Attack y Portishead.
La santísima trinidad del trip hop, los
mismos que no paran de renegar del
trip hop. Todos de regreso y alguno
que no se marchó nunca. Portishead
con disco nuevo en muchísimo tiem-
po, ¿la banda alternativa que seduce a
más gente de gustos masivos? Pues sí.
Massive Attack que siguen a su manera
y su particular ritmo. Conectados con
ellos, el Tricky que se dio a conocer jus-
to en el mítico “Blue Lines” de cuando
3D toleraba compañía musical. “Blue
Lines”, la madre, el padre, el abuelo y el
bisabuelo del cordero. Qué disco.
Y Tricky, la cabecita más arrebatada de
la música británica en los últimos tres
lustros. A su lado, Amy Winehouse pa-
rece una copia de Pocoyo con exceso de
laca y de tatoos. ¿Qué estaría haciendo
el Tricky? En vista del resultado recien-
te, parece que no se maltrató demasia-
do. Tricky regresa glorioso en este 2008
con su primer disco en cinco años,
“Knowle West Boy”, un título donde
recuerda a su barrio de nacimiento y
que conecta desde el carácter directo
y peleón de su primer tema, un hitazo
de los que hacen escuela: “Council Es-
tate”, donde suena un estribillo ilumi-
nado: “Remember, boy, you’re a superstar”.
Ejemplo de superación. Tricky salió
de la barriada, se convirtió en la figura
omnipresente justo en la mitad de los
pasados noventa, languideció y ahora
regresa con un puñetazo en el hígado.
El disco lo entrega un par de días an-
tes de su regreso estelar a los escena-
rios justo en el FIB Heineken 2008, un
verdadero lujo para comprobar si todo
lo que se anticipa de bueno en “Council
Estate” se reflejará sobre la tarima.
Trip-hop is not to blame for the steady
flow of insipid electronica that it inad-
vertently brought to the top of the “es-
sential listening” playlists compiled by
pretentious thirty-somethings. In mu-
sic, we end up having to clear far too
many innovators of the crimes com-
mitted by their offspring. Rage Against
the Machine are not responsible for
the invasion of so-called numetal, nor
should we saddle Kraftwork with the
blame for the endless crap that has
been churned out under the “techno”
label over the last few decades.
It’s like talking about Spain’s great-
est chefs: it’s not that there’s anything
much the matter with Ferran Adrià, but
his followers are boring as hell. Tricky
is the Adrià of trip-hop and hip-hop
put together, if you get my drift.
Tricky, Massive Attack and Portishead.
The holy trinity of trip-hop, though
they themselves never tire of disown-
ing the tag. They’re all back, though not
all of them went anywhere. Are Portis-
head, who have just released their first
album for some time, the alternative
group with the most appeal amongst
the mainstream masses? I reckon so.
Massive Attack, meanwhile, are not
changing a winning formula or losing
their distinctive sound. In the same
breath we can mention the Tricky who
made a name for himself alongside

Attack on the mythical “Blue Lines”,
produced back in the days when 3D
still went in for musical backing. “Blue
Lines”- the mummy, daddy, grand-
father and godfather of the genre all
rolled into one. What a bloody album.
Tricky, the most beaten-up face of
the last 15 years of British music. He
makes Amy Winehouse look like a
Pocoyo wannabe, with nails painted
OTT and too many tattoos. What can
Tricky have been up to, anyway? By the
looks of it, he hasn’t let himself go too
badly. Tricky makes a glorious come-
back this year with his first album in
five years, “Knowle West Boy”, a title
that harks back to the estate where he
was brought up and which ties in with
the direct, confrontational tone of the
first single, a massive hit of ground-
breaking proportions: “Council Estate”,
with an enlightened hook - “Remem-
ber, boy, you’re a superstar”. Tricky is
a model of self-betterment. He made
it out the ends, became the main man
of the mid-90s, fell off for a while, and
now he’s back with a vengeance. The al-
bum’s out just a couple of days before
he makes a starring return to the spot-
light at FIB Heineken 2008, giving us
the genuine privilege of seeing wheth-
er the huge promise of “Council Estate”
is to be borne out on stage.

Gnarls Barkley
Danger Mouse y Cee-Lo, Gnarls Barkley,
asombraron a propios y extraños con su
álbum de debut, “St. Elsewhere” (2006).
Una explosiva mezcla de banda sonora
de spaghetti western, hip-hop y soul mol-
deaban temazos de la altura de ‘Crazy’ o
“Smiley Faces”. La súper-vitaminada ‘Run’
ha sido el adelanto a su segunda entrega
“The Odd Couple” (2008), cuyo contenido
muestra con todo lujo de detalles los ha-
llazgos de soul psicodélico que han creado
y que augura una fiesta por todo lo alto en
el Escenario Verde.

Heavy Trash
Jon Spencer, también al mando de The Jon
Spencer Blues Explosion y en su día líder de
Pussy Galore, y Matt Verta-Ray son Heavy
Trash. Rock´n´ Roll y rockabilly son los ejes
destacados sobre los que fluye la inspiración
del dúo dando forma a las canciones inclui-
das en los dos álbumes publicados por el
grupo hasta la fecha: "Heavy Trash" (2005) y
"Going Way Out with Heavy Trash" (2007).
Pero Spencer y Verta-Ray no se anclan en el
revivalismo. Por su música también fluyen
efluvios blues y garageros que no se quedan
en los tics habituales y que redondean con
una chulería que se agradece.
Jon Spencer – who is also at the helm of The
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and back in
the day was the leader of Pussy Galore – and
Matt Verta-Ray are Heavy Trash.
Rock-n-roll and rockabilly are this duo’s
cornerstones of inspiration, and this is
more than evident on the songs from the
two albums this group has released to date:
“Heavy Trash” (2005) and “Going Way Out
with Heavy Trash” (2007). But Spencer and
Verta-Ray hardly rest on the laurels of reviv-
alism. Their music also pulses with the blues
and garage rock in a completely thrilling and
unique way that many find irresistible.

This band got together in Dublin in the
Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo, together known
as Gnarls Barkley, amazed one and all with
their debut album, “St. Elsewhere” (2006). An

Booka Shade
Este dúo alemán ha sido una de las mejores
propuestas electrónicas de los dos últimos
años. En una escena cambiante, Booka Sha-
de han marcado su camino con tres traba-
jos en los que su techno ofrece varias caras
rítmicas. Walter Merziger y Arno Kammer-
meier han rubricado su estilo en “Memen-
to” (2004), “Movements” (2006) y “The Sun
And The Neon Lights” (2008), salpicándolo
de apuntes sintéticos que, por su buen ha-
cer, les ha llevado a remezclar a nombres
como Depeche Mode, Hot Chip, The Knife,
Moby o Tiga.
This German duo is one of the most out-
standing electrohouse proponents in recent
years. In a fast-changing scene, Booka Shade
has blazed its on trail with three albums on
which their techno vision explores various
rhythmic vibes. Walter Merziger and Arno

“The Sun and the Neon Lights” (2008), with
a healthy splash of synth sounds. And their

The Raconteurs, un grupo que lejos de ser
un divertimento de sus creadores es una
robusta realidad. Ellos, junto a Patrick Ke-
eler y Jack Lawrence, son los responsables
de “Broken Boy Soldiers” (2006) y “Consolers
Of the Lonely” (2008), dos álbumes de rock
duro con toques de psicodelia y rock pro-
gresivo que recuerdan, por momentos, a
héroes pretéritos como The Amboy Dukes
y Blue Cheer.

a bit of fun for its creators has become a ro-

touches which, at times, are reminiscent of

ROCK con mayúsculas y con mús-
culo. My Morning Jacket, el grupo de
Jim James –compositor, guitarrista y
cantante- es conocido por sus exce-
lentes directos, en los que no falta de
nada. El último trabajo hasta la fecha
de este poderoso cuarteto, "Okonokos"
(2006), registrado en directo, es buen
testigo de la rotundidad sobre los es-
cenarios de esta banda americana. Su
nueva entrega, "Evil Urges", acaba de
ver la luz.
ROCK in capitals and with muscle.
My Morning Jacket, the band led by
Jim James – songwriter, guitarist and
singer – is known for its excellent
live performances, in which nothing
is lacking. The latest offering to date
from this powerhouse four-guy band,
"Okonokos" (2006), which was record-
ed live, is a good testament to this
American band’s tremendous stage
presence. Their new album, "Evil
Urges", is just slated for release.

The Kills
Alison Mosshart y Jamie Hince vuelven al fes-
tival para presentar “Midnight Boom” (2008),
su tercer álbum. La pareja regresa con su efec-
tivo electro-rock, que siguiendo los pasos de
sus predecesores, “Keep On Your Mean Side”
(2003) y “No Wow” (2005), da un paso más hacia
la pista de baile a base de beats contundentes
sin perder su guitarreo característico. Ahí es
donde The Kills dan en la diana, en esa mezcla
en la que la voz de Mosshart pellizca al oyente
con firmeza y los ramalazos rítmicos de Hince
sirven de motor para ganar la partida.

the Festival to present “Midnight Boom” (2008),
their third album. They return with their ef-
fective electro-rock which – while continuing
along the same lines as their previous releas-
es, “Keep on Your Mean Side” (2003) and “No
Wow” (2005) – goes a step forward towards the
dance floor with compelling beats that never
lose sight of their characteristic strumming.
This is where The Kills really hit the mark – in
that mix of Mosshart’s soul-piercing voice and
Hince’s poetry-inspired rhythms – a truly win-
ning combination.

rable. John Acquaviva pertenece a esa estirpe
de dj’s que han sentado base para muchos. En
sus diecisiete años de carrera el canadiense

fundador, junto a su amigo Richie Hawtin, de

night, John Acquaviva is one of those DJs
who have laid the foundation for countless
others. In his seventeen-year career, this guy
from Canada has circled the world several
times propagating the essence of electronic

Plus 8 and Definitive Recordings, which have
propelled the careers of people like Speedy J
and Kenny Larkin. Techno, house, the De-
troit sound, minimal, electro… They have all
passed through the hands of this luminary

Al verle uno cae directamente en la cuenta de
que Adrian Thaws es único. Meterse en sus
discos hace correr el riesgo de desubicarse y
no saber qué terreno se está pisando. Qui-
zás sea mejor así, porque esa es la relación
que parece plantear. De garganta raspada y
ritmos reptantes, el de Bristol asume ciertas
dosis de oscuridad para transformarlas en
espejos que reflejan truculentas sensaciones.
“Maxinquaye” (1995), “Pre-Millenium Tension”
(1996) o el inminente “Knowle West Boy”, son
suficientes razones para dejarse empujar ha-
cia el sonido inclasificable de Tricky.
Just one look and you immediately know
that Adrian Thaws is unique. And, really
getting into his albums you run the risk of
getting disoriented and not knowing exactly
where you stand. But perhaps it is better that
way because this is the kind of relationship
he seems to want to establish. With a whis-
pering lyrical style and slithering rhythms,
this guy from Bristol delves in the darkness
and turns it into reflections of soul-shaking
sensations. “Maxinquaye” (1995), “Pre-Mil-
lennium Tension” (1996) and the soon-to-be-
released “Knowle West Boy” are more than
reason enough to explore the unclassifiable
sound of Tricky.

“That’s not my name”, “Shut up and let me

el dúo británico The Ting Tings está a punto
de lanzarnos para que nos quedemos con su
nombre. Katie White y Jules de Martino es-
trenan su primer disco “We Started Nothing”
entre reminiscencias a bandas como Tom

“That’s Not My Name”, “Shut Up and Let Me

the British duo known as The Ting Tings
will be playing for us to etch their names in

Antes de que mucha gente se fijase en el
llamado sonido americano estaba el talen-
to de American Music Club para dar una
buena lección de sensibilidad sin artificios
y fronteras. La banda de San Francisco ha
escrito grandes discos como “The Restless
Stranger”, “California”, “Everclear”, “San
Francisco” o el reciente “The Golden Age”.
En ellos el grupo describe como pocos los
derroteros anímicos que se reflejan con
absoluta cercanía en la voz de Mark Eitzel,
un compositor pleno de un discurso ex-
presivo pletórico y cercano.
Before many people started to notice
the so-called American sound, there was
the talent behind American Music Club
preaching the virtues of simple sensibili-
ties without affectations or borders. This
San Francisco band has made some great
albums like “The Restless Stranger”, “Cali-
fornia”, “Everclear”, “San Francisco” and

Jordi Herrera, cantante de Satellites, se
sirve de esta nueva encarnación para dar
rienda suelta a una búsqueda en la que
lo ensoñador y lo surreal son ingredien-
tes especiales en un universo cercano a
las fantasías de Lewis Carroll o Edward
Gorey. El sonido de The Marzipan Man
discurre por un cauce folk trufado de
curiosas historias sobradas de imáge-
nes. La voz de Herrera no hace otra cosa
que aumentar el carácter mágico de una
música que vuela por encima de nues-
tros oídos.
Jordi Herrera, the singer from The Sat-
ellites, helps himself to this new incar-
nation to give free reign to a search in
which what’s dream and what’s surreal
are the special ingredients in a world
reminiscent of the fantasies of Lewis
Carroll or Edward Gorey. The sound
of The Marzipan Man travels along a
folk causeway packed full with curious
stories brimful with images. The voice
of Herrera further adds to intensify the
magical nature of a music which flies
above our ears.

El argentino-sueco José González se ha
convertido en uno de los artistas de folk
más interesantes de nuestros días. Gui-
tarrista de técnica exquisita, funde en
sus rasgueos influencias que van desde
Davy Graham hasta Silvio Rodríguez,
pasando por Nick Drake y Bert Jansch.
Su tesitura vocal, por otra parte, le her-
mana con Elliott Smith y Mark Koze-
lek (Red House Painters), en un disco
como “In Our Nature” donde hace de
su cancionero un nítido espejo creativo
donde reflejarse.

Lori Meyers
Es acertado decir que con cada disco
los granadinos Lori Meyers van am-
pliando un espectro que se acrecienta
gracias a la amplitud de sus composi-
ciones y al mimo con el que tratan las
melodías de “Cronolánea” . “Luces de
neón”, “Saudade” o “Luciérnagas y mari-
posas” tienen el arranque y el aguante
para plantar a la banda en una tesitura
en la que el pop de querencia por los
sesenta evidencia las cualidades de una
buena banda.

Manos de Topo
Siempre hay grupos que pueden gustar o no,
hay otros que suscitan de todo menos indi-
ferencia. Eso es lo que ocurre con Manos de
Topo. “Ortopedias Bonitas” es un compen-
dio de romanticismo no exento de humor
que traza conexiones entre lo narrativo y lo
visual. Para ello la voz de Miguel Ángel se
tensa y crispa, medio ahogada entre unas
melodías de pop que parecen estar al ser-
vicio de unas narraciones sentimentales en
las que la alegoría y la supuesta confesión
derivan en algo la mar de atractivo.

ers that never leave you feeling indifferent.
The latter is the case with Manos de Topo.
“Ortopedias Bonitas” is a compendium of
romanticism, although not without hu-
mour, that traces connections between the
narrative and the visual. To achieve this ef-
fect, the voice of Miguel Ángel tightens and
tenses, half drowned out by pop melodies
that seem to be at the service of sentimental
narrations in which allegory and supposed
confession prove enormously appealing.

Mencionar a Bracken es hacer referencia a
Chris Adams, miembro de los interesantísi-

nueva aventura tiene todas las facturas para

ken impulsa un pop futurista que deja brotar
elementos del hip hop, el dub y la experimen-
tación en estructuras de pequeños elemen-
tos que bordan una totalidad admirable. “We
Know About The Need" (2007) es un álbum
que, como su predecesor "Heatens" (2006)
está construido por diversos fragmentos de
sonido que acaban por sostener un armazón

Querido diario: hace quince años que no te escribo. También hace quince años que un gru-
po, uno que transformó mi adolescencia, no subía a un escenario. Hoy, viernes 18 de julio,
he cumplido con una de las asignaturas pendientes de esos años en que era demasiado
joven para volar a Londres a ver conciertos; en que, encerrada en mi habitación, subía el
volumen hasta ensordecerme con aquella desgarradora melodía (“You Made Me Realise”).
Hoy he regresado al pasado porque Kevin Shields, Colm O’Ciosoig, Belinda Butcher y Deb
Googe se han inventado la máquina del tiempo, esta noche, en Benicàssim. Quizá es ver-
dad que no se hablan, que toda esta reunión tiene algo de farsa. A ratos, mientras daba pie
el concierto (“Only Shallow” haciéndome temblar las rodillas), sentía que la química sorda
de sus canciones no funcionaba tan bien como en aquel tiempo, y que probablemente el
experimento fallaría. Pero -Kevin y Belinda sin hacer cruzar sus miradas ni una vez, como
si sólo existieran sus pedales-, me tocaron “You Never Should”, la infinita “Come in Alone”, el
latigazo caliente de “I Only Said”, y comencé a perder mis reticencias. Kevin y los demás
están algo más arrugados, pero tan solventes, tan entregados a la actuación, de esa forma
estática e incomunicada que adorábamos tú y yo, que sentí que yo también podía. Entonces
sonó “Soon”: no es sólo esa increíble capacidad de entonces, para sacarnos de la realidad
inmediata, es algo más. Y poco después nos aplastaron -mucho público nostálgico y mucho
otro hambriento de intensidad- haciendo una sinfonía de distorsiones y acoples sin piedad
alguna, desapasionados, tercos, por siete minutos largos. Puede que, pasados estos quince
años, tengan hijos e hipoteca -como yo-, puede que no se hayan acercado en un largo tiem-
po a sus instrumentos -¡incomprensible!-, puede que no les apetezca hacer nuevas cancio-
nes -¡qué dolor! Pero lo cierto es que My Bloody Valentine, los de ahora, aman la distorsión

Dear diary: I haven’t written anything for 15 years. It’s also been 15 years since
the last time a group who transformed my teenage years went on stage. At that
time I was too young to fly to London to see concerts. I used to sit in my room
and turn up the volume to listen to the heartrending melody of “You Made Me
Realise”. Today, the 18th of July, one of my dreams has come true. I have gone
back in time because Kevin Shields, Colm O’Ciosoig, Belinda Butcher and Deb
Googe have invented a time machine, tonight in Benicàssim. Maybe it’s true
that the band don’t even talk to each other and their come-back is a bit of a farce.
At times as the gig progressed I felt that maybe the chemistry of their songs
didn’t work quite as well as the first time round, and that their comeback will
probably be short-lived. However, I have to confess that “Only Shallow” made me
go weak at the knees. Kevin and Belinda didn’t even look at each other once. It
was as if only their pedals existed, but despite all this, as they played “You Never
Should”, the eternal “Come in Alone”, and the heart-warming “I Only Said” my
doubts were laid to rest. Kevin and co.are a little older and more wrinkled, but
they gave their all and began to win me over. Then “Soon” rang out. It’s not just
their ability to instantly transform reality, it’s something more. And then they
overwhelmed us with a merciless, distorted seven-minute symphony. Maybe,
15 years down the line, they have children and mortgages, like me. .Maybe they
haven’t touched their instruments for ages – incomprehensibly! Maybe they
don’t feel like writing new songs – what a shame! But what is for sure is that
today’s My Bloody Valentine love distorted guitars and they purify themselves
through sound. Just like me.

Flashazo. Viendo a Alexis Taylor vestido
de primera comunión (con camisa rosa y
zapatito blanco, parecía que su madre le
había preparado el vestuario) y la pinta de
gente corriente de sus compañeros, sería
fácil imaginarlos como una orquestina de
boda cualquiera. Y en eso, Hot Chip van y
terminan su actuación con esa versión tan
cariñosa del “Nothing Compares 2 U”, tema
obra de Prince, no lo olvidemos. A estos
londinenses les gusta hacer el gamberro
a partir de cándidas melodías. Resuelven
la fórmula con notable alto. Modulan las
voces con cadencias perfectas. Alexis, ese
Woody Allen de la generación nu-rave, can-
ta hasta demasiado bien para el nivel medio
de la música actual. Pero luego te la juegan
con la inteligente aplicación de todos los
recursos pisteros del arsenal más sudoroso.
En vivo y riguroso directo, tocando mucho y
sin apenas base a la que agarrarse, Hot Chip
hacen físico algo que podría ser demasiado
artificioso gracias a que lanzan versiones
todavía más bailables de sus temas. Hace
unos años, pasaron algo desapercibidos
en el FIB porque coincidían con no sé qué
figurón del Escenario Verde. La de anoche
fue su confirmación a lo José Tomás, pero
sin que nadie sangre, por Dios. Arrasaron
por completo un Fiberfib.com que vivió
minutos de grandioso disparate. MEJOR
MOMENTO: La espeluznante reacción
del público con “Over and Over”, con varios
miles de personas brincando a lo loco, fue
casi mejor que el griterío cuando enfocaron
ese anti-hit (¿dónde está el ritmo?) que es

Cuando el artista es artista, lo demues-
tra incluso en una caída de ojos. ¿Al-
guien duda de que Mika es uno de los
elegidos? No, por supuesto, y menos
después de eso que hizo anoche. La
música es diversión, ni más ni menos.
La música no es ni pose ni imagen, la
música está por encima de todo eso.
La música es un grandioso espectácu-
lo, aunque algunos se empeñen en ol-
vidarlo. Está claro que Mika no, Mika
es LA MÚSICA. ¿Qué es un concierto?
Básicamente un instante para que el
público y el artista se den cuenta de
que están delante de algo diferente.
Es imposible cansarse de ver a Mika
sobre un escenario, y más si llena la
tarima de ramos de flores, palos de
You could be forgiven for thinking that being
asked to listen to Mika’s strident shrieking
at three in the morning was some sort of a
joke. But, as it turns out, the Lebanon-born
artist’s sugary-sweet, Lollipop-infested tonic
was just what the doctor ordered, a land of
“Happy Endings” and “Cartoon Motion” which
the public gladly and enthusiastically lapped
up after a hard-hitting evening at FIB Hei-
neken. Mika is no lyricist, but by golly is he
one hell of a performer. Sporting a pair of
pantaloons one could only describe as te-
chnicoloured, Mika’s virtuoso performance
succeeded in igniting a crowd who could
have quite easily have been forgiven for fla-
gging after a long day on the job. Opening
with his biggest, and most easily recogni-
zable hit, “Relax (take it easy)”, the classically
Wow. Seeing Alexis Taylor dressed as if for
his first communion (wearing a pink shirt
and white trainers, an outfit his mother
could have made) and the everyday look of
the other band members, they could easily
be mistaken for a band at someone’s wed-
ding. But this is how they go about, and
Hot Chip finish their set to boot with that
very moving rendition of Prince´s “Noth-
ing Compares to You”. These Londoners like
to create a riot fuelled by simple melodies.
They deliver the formula at a high pitch
with the vocals modulated alongside per-
fect rhythms. Alexis, this Woody Allen for
the new-rave generation, almost sings too
well for the level of the actual music. They
tease you with an intelligent application of
their armoury of sweat-inducing, on-stage
tricks. Brutally live, and playing at the
limit without seemingly any bass to hold
on to, Hot Chip create almost too skilfully
something physical by playing even more
danceable versions of their songs. A few
years ago, they almost went unnoticed at
FIB because their set clashed with who-
knows-which-star on the Escenario Verde.
Last night’s performance was, by contrast,
their crowning glory. A total conquest of
the Fiberfib.com tent crowd who, for a few
minutes, lost all reason.
HIGHLIGHT: The crowd’s hair-raising
reaction to “Over and Over” with several
thousand fibers bouncing for all they were
worth, almost better than their scream
when the band began cranking up the
anti-hit ( just where is the rhythm?) that is
“Ready for the Floor”.

de muchísimo confeti y una grandiosa
figura hinchable porque sí, gorditas
mías, sois preciosas. Otra vez: viva la
candidez y la eterna adolescencia. Al-
guno dirá que Mika es excesivamente
mainstream, seguro que tanto como
Sinatra o Elvis en su día. La verdadera
certeza es que todos y cada uno de los
que vieron a Mika cerrar el Escenario
Verde el 19 de julio de 2008 (que ya
era de madrugada, por si no se habían
dado cuenta) guardarán ese concierto
como un recuerdo cariñoso e inolvi-
dable.
MEJOR MOMENTO: por favor, no
me hagan esto: ¡todo!

and down and singing along like bunnies on
E. Whilst this momentum was not maintai-
ned throughout (the crowd were somewhat
muted during more substantial numbers
such as “Billy Brown”, when Mika was trans-
formed from rampaging Freddie Mercury
into sombre Elton John at the piano), when
Mika finally withdrew from the clown’s-
mouth-set through which he had emerged,
he did so having clearly endeared himself to
a public he pulled out all the stops to engage
with. HIGHLIGHTS: the uninhibited pla-
yfulness of the performance, culminating
in the spectacular percussive finale, perfor-
med shirtless, which had the crowd eating
(lollipops) out of the palm of his hand. The

RÓISÍN MURPHY

De toda la estirpe de Murphys artistas
(ya saben: Peter, Elliot, James, Eddie…),
Róisín es con muchísima diferencia la
más bella. También la que mejor puede
lucir esos diseños imposibles inspirados
sin duda en la primera mitad de “Regreso
al futuro 2” mientras se dedica en cuer-
po y alma a unas aún más imposibles
coreografías. Sobre el papel: un salto es-
cénico sin red. En la práctica, la consa-
gración de Róisín Murphy como la reina
del mutant-disco veinte años después
del mutant-disco. O más bien, como la
reanimadora del género para las masas.
En el Escenario Verde, Róisín mostró
ayer orgullosa los temas de su segundo
trabajo en solitario, haciendo gala de un
fantástico equilibrio entre lo orgánico y

also the only one that can carry off those
impossible designs with panache, in-
spired without a doubt by the first half of
“Back to the Future II”, while she throws
herself heart and soul into bizarre dance
routines… It seems like a risky jump with-
out a safety net; in practice, it marks the
crowning of Róisín Murphy as the un-
disputed queen of mutant-disco, twenty
years after mutant-disco was born, or,
if you prefer, as the person responsible
for reviving the genre for the masses.

Algo hay en Benicàssim que sintoni-
za con el tipo de música que ofrece
la más plácida de las dos bandas de
Will Johnson (en realidad es una sola
con dos caras). Debe ser el calor, o el
fondo de montañas rojizas peladas,
pero el country-folk más relajado
siempre encuentra su hueco mágico
en un atardecer del FIB Heineken, y
este año fue en el escenario Fiberfib.
com con South San Gabriel. Sus can-
ciones envolvieron en una burbuja al
selecto público que les prestó sus oí-
dos y lo trasladaron a una mecedora
en un porche rural de Texas, con sus
perezosos ritmos de escobillas, sus
afilados teclados, sus mullidos slides
y esa voz a fuego lento. Por momentos
recordaba el intimismo de Mark Ko-
zelek en Red House Painters (“Emma
Jane”). Otras veces a las canciones se
les veía potencial para crecer en modo
pop (a más de uno de los presentes,
“St. Augustine” le recordó al “Creep” de
Radiohead). Pero el gran arma de la
banda es la contención, la sutileza, la
capacidad de detener el tiempo du-
rante una hora mágica en un festival
frenético.
MEJOR MOMENTO: “Everglades”,
precioso invento con un ritmo pro-
gramado bajo un embriagador col-
chón de piano y slides disolviéndose
en un infinito fade-out mientras el úl-
timo rayo de sol se escondía tras las
montañas.

lo sintético, dejándose acompañar por
una gran banda de apoyo con la que in-
teractuó en todo momento con teatral
sentido del humor. El concierto fluctuó
en todo momento entre lo más cool de
los ochenta y el funk blanco que llena
“Overpowered”, dejando para la recta final
el trío de ases que forman “Movie Star”,
“Overpowered” (la canción) y “Ramalama
(Bang Bang)”. Ya con todos los fibers en
el bolsillo, la diva se despidió con un úl-
timo gag: paliza simulada a las coristas. Y,
sin que sirva de precedente, miles de per-
sonas contentas de que se haya cumplido
la ley de Murphy.
MEJOR MOMENTO: El teatro que tiene
montado Róisín con su banda. Divertido

and the synthetic and accompanied on
stage by a fantastic group with whom she
interacted at every moment with theatrical
aplomb and a great sense of humour. The
concert constantly fluctuated between the
height of 80s cool and the white funk with
which “Overpowered” is jam-packed, with
the trio of aces, “Movie Star”, “Overpowered”
(the song) and “Ramalama (Bang Bang)”
reserved for the finale. With the fibers al-
ready eating out of the palm of her hand,
the diva bade farewell to the crowd with
one last gag: making out as if to give her
backup singers a beating. And for once,
thousands of people went away satisfied
that Murphy’s Law had been enforced.
HIGHLIGHT: the spectacle Roisín puts
on with her band. Funny as hell.
There’s something about Benicàs-
sim that is perfectly in tune with
the more placid of Will Johnson’s
two bands (truth be told, it’s one
band with two faces). It must be
the heat, or the backdrop of rocky
red mountains, because relaxed
country-folk always finds its spe-
cial niche one Festival evening, and
this year it was on the Fiberfib.com
stage, with South San Gabriel. The
select audience who lent their ears
to the performance were left spell-
bound, placed in a bubble by the
songs and transported to a rocking
chair on a rural porch in Texas, with
those lazy drum brush strokes, their
sharp keyboards, their soft slides
and that simmering voice. At times
it brought to mind Mark Kozelek’s
intimate moments with Red House
Painters (“Emma Jane”). At others,
they seemed ready to launch an as-
sault on pop (“St. Augustine” remind-
ed many in the crowd of Radiohead’s
“Creep”). But the band’s most power-
ful weapons are self-possession and
subtlety, their ability to freeze time
for a whole hour at what is a frenetic
festival.
HIGHLIGHT: “Everglades”, a fab
concoction with a pre-programmed
beat under an intoxicating piano
backdrop and slides dissolving into
an infinite fade-out whilst the last ray
of sunshine slipped silently behind
the mountains.

Con el bueno de Pete nunca se sabe. “Carry on up the morning”, “Delivery” y

Como con Sid Vicious nunca se sa-
bía. Y, para qué vamos a engañarnos,
sus directos molan tanto como los de
Amy Winehouse porque la cosa tiene
un punto de circo romano: sí, el tipo
está ahí, con su guitarra y su pinta de
DiCaprio maldito, pero quién sabe
por cuánto tiempo. Porque aunque
ahora se embuta en sucedáneos de
Armani (el modelito gángster de ano-
che no tenía desperdicio), Pete sigue
siendo Pete y lo suyo, punk (bien mas-
ticado) de vieja escuela. Concentrado
de hits, eso sí: sonó buena parte de
“Shotter’s Nation” y el público lo abra-
zó con una orgía de vasos de cerveza
voladores (hicieron acto de presencia
el enloquecedor “Side of the Road”, con
su estribillo a prueba de puñetazos)
y hubo más de un rescate “Down in
Albion”. De leyenda sucia fue el cie-
rre con “Fuck Forever”. Para entonces,
Pete ya se había cargado el pie de mi-
cro de una patada y se había sentado
a atarse los zapatos. También se había
olvidado de la letra (de “Fuck Forever”,
sí), pero uno no tiene por qué cantar
si lleva ese sombrero. Cosas de chicos
malos.
MEJOR MOMENTO: El arranque.
Ese sorprendente intento de triturar
el “Heartbreak Hotel” de Elvis con una
versión garage calienta motores.

Good old Pete, you never know
what’s going to happen, just like you
never did with Sid Vicious. And let’s
not kid ourselves, his live shows are
a bit like Amy Winehouse’s. There’s
a hint of the Roman circus about
the whole thing: there he is with
his guitar and his mean DiCaprio-
esque look, but you never know for
how long. And although he dresses
up in Armani (last night’s gangster
suit wasn’t lost on us), Pete is all
about punk, old school and una-
bashed. There was no shortage of
hits. They played most of the songs
from “Shotter’s Nation” and the
public responded with a shower of
flying beer glasses. They brought
the house down with “Carry on up
the morning”, “Delivery” and the
raucous “Side of the Road” with its’
fist-in-air chorus, and “Down in
Albion”. The closing number, “Fuck
Forever”, was pure gritty punk. By
that stage Pete had already kicked
the microphone stand over and sat
down to tie his shoe laces up as well
as forgetting the words of the song.
But why does a mean geezer in a hat
have to sing? Bad guys can get away
with it.
The best moment was the opening
number. This surprising mashed-
up garage version of Elvis’s “Heart-
break Hotel” really got everybody
going.

En cada nueva edición el FIB Heineken
genera nuevas filias, bandas que producen
primero expectación y luego adhesión
entre los aficionados menos conformis-
tas. Este año ese rol lo encabezan Vincent
Vincent & the Villains, un combo nacido
de la nostalgia por los viejos modos y so-
nidos rescatados de la época más preté-
rita del rock. Con un 75% de ocupación
de la carpa a primera hora de la tarde,
esta nueva esperanza británica brindó un
show revival, repleto de canciones ideales
para bailar a pleno sol. Después de ver la
atención generada y el resultado obtenido,
será extraño no verlos de nuevo en el futu-
ro, en mejor horario y escenario.

Every year FIB Heineken generates
new groups that produce expecta-
tions and then affection amongst the
less conformist fans. This year Vincent
Vincent and the Villains has been one
of those acts, a group born of nostalgia
for the sounds of good old-fashioned
rock. With the marquee 75% full at the
opening of today’s festival this up-and-
coming British band gave us a show
with a distinct revival feel, full of per-
fect songs to dance to in the sun. After
such a successful performance I would
be surprised if we didn’t see them here
again in the future in a better time-slot
and on a bigger stage.

ochentero de The Rumble Strips. Su ac-
tualización de la fórmula que a inicios de
los ochenta encumbró a Dexys Midnight
Runners conserva la frescura necesaria
para rejuvenecer un género algo olvidado.
La irresistible “Building a Boat” y su single
primerizo, “No Soul”, momentos más des-
tacados de un excelente show que acabó
como en las mejores ocasiones, con una
audiencia gradualmente numerosa y pro-
gresivamente entregada, en un final de fies-
ta con todos los fibers bailando y saltando.

com tent. Following on from the ´50s
rock of Vincent Vincent and the Villains,
came the turn of The Rumble Strips
and their ´80s neo-soul. Such per-
formances elevated Dexy´s Midnight
Runners at the beginning of the´80s,
and theirs retains enough freshness to
reinvigorate this somewhat forgotten
genre. The most outstanding moments
in an excellent show were “Building a
Boat” and their debut single “No Soul”
and, like all the best concerts, it ended
with an ever-growing, absorbed crowd
in party mood, with fibers dancing en-
ergetically. Who said indie boys don´t
have soul in their soul?

La antítesis del día anterior. Si el jueves a la
misma hora los “infinitos” Sigur Rós nos
regalaban una larga oda al estreñido, ayer
tomaban el relevo los prehistóricos New
York Dolls, liderados por las arrugas sin
complejos de David Johansen y los guita-
rrazos facilones pero resultones de Sylvain
Sylvain. Desde su resurrección de la mano
de Morrissey -expresidente de su club de
fans- hace cuatro años, los neoyorquinos
habían ido generando un boca-oreja muy
positivo alrededor de sus shows. Ayer por
fin defendieron con dignidad la leyenda
de su nombre, y recibieron la bendición
del público fiber, que se concentró en
masa ante el escenario Verde para bailar
al ritmo de “Personality Crisis”, gritar al
unísono el estribillo de la reciente “We’re
All in Love” o enardecer de nostalgia ante
la desparramante versión del “Piece of My
Heart” de Janis Joplin. Los veteranos roc-
keros, que en su momento no recibieron
la atención que merecían, y que han ido
viendo pasar modas y géneros que ellos ya
inventaron décadas antes que el resto del
mundo los descubriera, estaban exultantes
ante el baño de masas que recibían. Era su
hora de redención, más que merecida.
EL MEJOR MOMENTO del concierto y
uno de los del Festival, la sentida -y meta-
fórica- versión de “You Can’t Put Your Arms
Around a Memory”, del exmiembro de la
banda Johnny Thunders, muerto por so-
bredosis en 1991 y que el pasado martes
hubiera cumplido 56 años.

There couldn’t have been a greater
contrast with the day before. On
Thursday night at the same time Sig-
ur Rós offered us a long, contained,
inexpressive set. The New York Dolls
however, led by the unselfconsciously-
wrinkled David Johansen, and featur-
ing the predictable but effective gui-
tar playing of Sylvain Sylvain, gave us
pure uninhibited rock and roll. Every
since being rediscovered by Morris-
sey, their number one fan , four years
ago, the New York Dolls have been get-
ting rave reviews. Yesterday they lived
up to their name, and were enthusi-
astically received by the fiber crowd,
who gathered en masse in front of
the stage ready to dance to “Personal-
ity Crisis”, and shout out the chorus
of “We’re All in Love” and indulge in
the nostalgia of “Piece of My Heart”
by Janis Joplin. These old rockers
who never really achieved the recog-
nition they deserved in their day, and
have seen other people playing styles
they invented years ago, basked in the
limelight of the large crowd. It was
their moment of well-deserved glory.
THE HIGHLIGHT of the concert
and one of the best moments of the
festival was their version of “You Can’t
Put Your Arms Around a Memory”, by
Johnny Thunders, ex-member of the
group who died of an overdose in
1991, and who would have been 56 last
Tuesday.

LA CASA AZUL

Hula hoops, globos, sombreros chinos y
confeti. El público entiende el mensaje pe-
terpanesco que destila Guille Milkyway con
La Casa Azul. Miren, hay un bulo que dice
que los críticos musicales somos esos que
no bailan en los conciertos. Y un jamón. El
ejemplo cercano vale: este comentarista no
paró de mover la cadera con otro concierto
que supo a confirmación de músico espa-
ñol en el FIB 2008 (por ahora van Facto De-
lafé, El Columpio Asesino y La Casa Azul, y
lo que queda). Guille entró derechito a ma-
tar. En el arranque, “La Revolución Sexual”.
¡Arriba de ellos! La entrega del personal
quedaba clara en otra de esas reivindica-
ciones de españolidad que últimamente se
estilan por el Festival Internacional de Be-
nicàssim. Para quitarse el sinsabor del de-
sastre técnico de su anterior aparición en el
FIB Heineken, Guille optó por un montaje
ultratecnificado: visuales que se ajustaban
con las canciones, bases algo diferentes a
las versiones en disco de sus mejores temas
y sobre todo el propio Guille con una sol-
tura y la actitud de lo que realmente es: uno
de los mejores músicos de España. Y para
demostrarlo, esos momentos solo al piano
cercanos a ¿Elton John? Fuera fantasmas,
que vivan la profesionalidad y la sensación
de vivir feliz en una adolescencia plena de
sinsabores y alegrías. Conciertazo. Mil gra-
cias por esos bailes y por llamarnos guapos,
Guille. Nos lo merecemos y te lo merecías.
MEJOR MOMENTO: Aunque Guille se
expuso a mostrar sus cartas estilísticas, la
versión de “Love is in the Air” fue mágica.

La Casa Azul is indeed a strange phenom-
enon. Officially the ‘band’ consists of five
members who appear in the geeky music
videos reminiscent of 60’s TV family The
Brady Bunch. In reality, this is a solo act,
the brainchild of singer-songwriter and
producer Guille Milkyway. Last night’s
performance in the Vodaphone Fib
Club marquee opened with animated
robots on five oblong screens dancing
to pseudo-classical music. Guille didn’t
keep us waiting. The music synched into
the opening piano chords of “La Revolu-
ción Sexual”, his biggest hit to date. The
crowd went wild, especially the Spanish
contingent who enthusiastically belted
out the incredibly-catchy chorus with
its’ irresistible disco bass line. Guille
changed instruments and took to the pi-
ano to play a classic pop ballad with his
trademark bitter-sweet lyrics. The non-
Spanish contingent bopped about obedi-
ently but, inevitably, the irony was lost on
them. The total absence of a real band on
stage, and the unashamed use of a sleek
backing track and computer animations
began to bore the viewer after a few num-
bers. It felt a bit like hi-tech karaoke. The
crowd thinned noticeably. It would have
a more engaging show if the geeky fake
members from the music video had ap-
peared alongside him on stage.
THE BEST MOMENT was the opening
number with everybody singing along
to “La Revolución Sexual”. It was hard to
keep up the momentum after that.

Posiblemente El Columpio Asesino
ofrecieron los minutos musicales más
oscuros de la presente edición del FIB
Heineken. La presencia de la banda
navarra sobre un escenario impone,
y su música más todavía. Como si de
unos Gallon Drunk patrios se tratara,
su actuación fue todo un dechado de
electricidad y sudor en la que guitarras,
teclados, trompeta, percusiones y base
rítmica se pusieron de acuerdo para
extraer la esencia de blues siniestro y
sexual que planea sobre las canciones
de su celebrado último trabajo. Dieron
miedo, sí, pero del que produce cosqui-
lleo en el estómago y te invita a repetir.

reografías de luz a golpes. Luego habría
que añadir que la música de los juegos
de la MSX no era de ellos, pero suenan
a cinta de casette rayada y grabada por
encima con émulos de Crystal Castles
o Doktor Kosmos. Luego, afirmar que
hay vida después del falsete que canta
oh-oh-oh-pa-pa-pa. Y por último, pedir
a la organización que pasen una nueva
capa de cemento por el suelo, porque
parece que lo han hundido.

It’s possible that Spanish band El
Columpio Asesino (literally: The Killer
Swing) have offered us the darkest mu-
sical moments of this edition of FIB
Heineken. With their imposing pres-
ence on stage and ominous sound, it
is as if they were drawing their inspira-
tion from Gallon Drunk. The concert
was a potentially lethal combination of
electricity and sweat, in which guitars,
keyboards, trumpet, percussion and
baseline fused into a sinister, raunchy
blues: a sound that resonates in their
acclaimed, latest work. They’re terrify-
ing, yes, but what they produce gives
you flutters in your stomach and lures
you back for more.
Just to clarify: that thing glued to the
chests of Joseph Mount and company
was not a large creamy bun stuffed with
chocolate paste and lightly sprinkled
with icing sugar, but something akin to
the game Simon, where you bash mam-
moth buttons to put out the light. Also,
incredulous as it may seem, the band
didn’t compose the music for the Spec-
trum ZX81, although they might have re-
corded bits of Crystal Castles and Doktor
Kosmos on a warped tape. Thirdly, there
was human life beyond the oh-oh-oh-pa-
pa-pa sounds, and finally, someone men-
tion to Management that there’s a huge
hole pounded in the ground, due to the
accumulative jumping of fans.

Los guiris, que son muy suyos, terminaron
gritando: “¡Guinchou, Guinchou!”. Fue el
reflejo de una actuación que empezó desen-
redando el “wall of sound” spectoriano con
síncopas de socas, versos salseros y loops
afrobeat, para terminar con eficaces subido-
nes electrónicos y piezas nuevas que no se
despegan de un batiburrillo sólo definible
como El Guincho. El día que se decida a
mejorar su sonido exterior, a limpiar ciertos
samplers y a sacar la voz del fondo del arma-
rio, será para caerse de culo.
MEJOR MOMENTO: Lo último que es-
peraba este comentarista, canario de naci-
miento, era escuchar a Valentina la de Sabi-
nosa, figura esencial del folclore isleño, en

Admito que en cuanto vi a Ruth Radalet
empecé a buscar fotos de ella por Inter-
net para analizar restos de Photoshop.
Pero no los hay. Sencillamente es la no-
via ideal cuya voz atrae como las sirenas a
Ulises. No es por comparar, pero es toda
una Chelsea girl aburrida cantando sola
en una pista de baile. Y encima arranca-
ron el concierto con una sublime, deli-
ciosa cover del “I’m on fire” de Springs-
teen, para más tarde acometer con la
tristeza beatnik de “Night drive”. Hay
pocos grupos que combinen el disco-
punk con una imagen sesentera, y pocas
cantantes sexy-depresivas que recuerden
a Jeanette. Nos quedamos con la boca

Those who had no idea who this musi-
cian from the Canary Islands was, in-
evitably mispronounced his name and
shouted “Guinchoo, Guinchoo!” yet that
seemed somehow appropriate for an act
that started by perforating the Spector-
esque “wall of sound” with a barrage of
syncopated calypso, snippets of salsa
and afrobeat loops, and ended with a
series of electronic swoops and a series
of musical novelties that only added to
the general mash of sound. The day El
Guincho decides to polish up his act, to
give certain of his samples a miss and
to retrieve his voice from the attic, will
be the day I celebrate by running naked
through the VIP zone.
I have to admit that when I saw Ruth
Radalet I started to look for photos of
her on the Internet to try and find some
evidence of photoshop retouching. But
there were none to be found: she’s for
real, a pretty girl with a voice like a siren
of Ulysses. She comes across as a slightly
bored Chelsea girl singing alone on a
dance floor. They kicked off with a deli-
cious, sublime cover version of “I’m on
fire” by Springsteen, and later launched
into the beatnik melancholy of “Night
drive”. There are not many groups who
combine disco-punk with a sixties look,
and not many sexily-melancholic sing-
ers reminiscent of Jeanette. We were left
open-mouthed with amazement.

Miradlo: pobre hombre. En todas las fo-
tos de promoción parecía un tipo aban-
donado, sin novia ni plan para un viernes
por la noche. Además venía de jugar al
póker con la muerte. Venció, pero no sa-
bemos por cuánto ni en qué estado nos
encontraríamos a Jason Pierce. Salió de
blanco, y antes que ser aniquilado en un
hospital decidió dejar moribundo a todo
el arsenal musical (guitarras, batería, bajo,
voz) con un desgarro brutal y distorsión
sin límites en “You lie you cheat”. Una vez
cobrada su venganza, mostró el recital
de contrastes que caracteriza a “Songs in
A&E”: de las melancólicas “Shine a light”
y “Sweet talk” al himno “Good times”, todo
exprimido mediante dosis de neo-psi-
codelia y crescendos melodramáticos, y
un par de coristas por cuyas voces Nick
Cave hubiera firmado una hipoteca (¡tal
y como están las cosas!). Eclécticos hasta
decir basta, soportando la dura compe-
tencia de los chicos del sangriento San
Valentín, Spiritualized tuvieron sus de-
vaneos con la Velvet, The Byrds o incluso
el gospel, pero lo que sí estuvo a punto
de reventar los amplis fue el majestuo-
so y demencial muro de sonido (marca
Spector), que ríete tú de las atmósferas
tenues de Sigur Rós. Concierto no apto
para fibers con las orejas pequeñas.
MEJOR MOMENTO: La locura audio-
visual del inicio, donde hubo tres ata-
ques epilépticos no oficiales y más de
uno señaló hacia el limbo.

Take a look at him: poor man. In all the
promotional photos he looks destitute,
with neither girlfriend nor plan for a Fri-
day night. And what’s more he’s just played
poker with death as the stake. He won, but
what we don’t know is by how much and
in what state we will find Jason Pierce. He
emerged dressed all in white to play with a
brutal impudence and limitless distortion
“You lie you cheat”, a song in which, prior
to being laid out in hospital, he had lain
to waste the full musical arsenal (guitars,
drums, bass, vocals). His vengeance com-
plete, he proceeded to display the range
of contrasts which characterises “Songs
in A&E”: from the melancholic “Shine a
light” and “Sweet Talk” to the hymn “Good
times”, all conveyed through a dose of
neo-psychedelia, melodramatic crescen-
dos and a couple of choral singers who-
se voices Nick Cave would have given an
arm and a leg for (such is life!). Eclectic in
the extreme, and holding firm in the face
of competition from My Bloody Valenti-
ne, Spiritualized have flirted with Velvet
Underground, The Byrds and even with
gospel music, but what was threatening to
blow the amps last night was the majes-
tic and demented wall of sound (á la Phil
Spector) which laughed in the face of the
insubstantial atmospheres of Sigúr Rós.
Definitely not suitable for those fibers
with sensitive ears.
HIGHLIGHT: The epilepsy-inducing, au-
diovisual madness at the start, with many
a fiber left in a state of bewilderment.

Pensando en cómo abordar este texto
durante el concierto de los ganadores
del Proyecto Demo 2008, me pasaron
por la cabeza ideas lo suficientemente
entusiastas como para que me llamen
exagerado. Dani Poveda es un gran com-
positor pop, capaz de mirar cara a cara
a sus ídolos, indagar en el alma de sus
canciones y devolver una música que si
bien no aporta hallazgos remarcables,
suena clásica y rotunda en todo momen-
to. Sabe que la postmodernidad no es
una obligación sino una elección, y que
un arreglo de piano a lo Bacharach y una
buena sección de cuerdas todavía pueden
ser los mejores aliados de una canción.
La actuación de esta joven banda recor-
dó en su exultante vitalidad a unos Dec-
emberists menos leídos o a unos Belle &
Sebastian americanizados, consiguiendo
elevar sus redondas canciones varios es-
calones por encima de sus versiones en
estudio. Incluso nos regalaron una boni-
ta versión de “Only love can break your
heart”, de Neil Young, que como expli-
caron satisfechos, estará incluida en la
reedición que PIAS lanzará en breve de
su disco de debut. Y es que parece que
todo son razones para la alegría en casa
de Gentle Music Men. Sólo hacía falta
ver sus caras al final del concierto.
MEJOR MOMENTO: Minutos antes de
salir a escena suena Richard Hawley por
los altavoces y parte del grupo se marca
un playback en el lateral del escenario.
Buen gusto no les falta.

When debating how to approach this
text, during the concert given by the win-
ners of Proyecto Demo 2008, enough
superlatives came to mind that I could
fairly be labelled OTT. Dani Poveda is a
great pop composer, who is able to look
his idols squarely in the face, delve into
the soul of their songs and come up with
music which, whilst arguably failing to
bring out anything overly remarkable,
sounds classic and emphatic at all times.
He knows that postmodernism is a
choice, not an obligation, and that piano
arrangement à la Bacharach and a good
string section can still be a song’s best
friend. The exultant vitality of the young
band’s performance brought to mind a
less highfaluting Decemberists, or an
Americanized version of Belle & Sebas-
tian, and they succeeded in raising both
the bar and the roof, taking their well-
constructed songs out of the studio and
onto a whole new level. They even gave us
a lovely rendition of Neil Young’s “Only
love can break your heart”, which, as they
happily informed us, will be included on
PIAS’s forthcoming re-release of their
debut album. All the evidence points to
good times for these Gentle Music Men.
You should have seen their faces at the
end of the concert.
HIGHLIGHT: Minutes before coming
on stage, Richard Hawley’s voice rings
out over the speakers and some of the
group pretend to sing along from the
wings. If there’s one thing they don’t lack,
it’s a sense of humour.

Muchas veces la imagen de una banda
dice mucho de su sonido. En el caso de
este trío inglés (aumentado con un ba-
tería en gran parte de su actuación) no
es tanto su aspecto como las imágenes
que proyectadas durante su show. Con
puntos y cuadros, como un pixelazo
de baja resolución de los años seten-
ta, construyen imágenes cargadas de
color y movimiento, figuras humanas
e incluso un guiño al pasado (¡el jue-
go del Pacman!). De igual manera, su
música tiene un punto robótico pero
también un latido humano, el calor de
la sangre palpitando en ritmos circula-
res y contagiosos con destellos electri-
zantes y fraseos angulares sincopados.
Frenéticos y aritméticos, rellenando
los puntos que van desde el pop repe-
titivo en espirales de Stereolab hasta el
kraut-rock de Can, en lugar de sonar
fríos suenan cálidos e intensos, a veces
románticos y cuando se lo proponen,
incluso funkies. Sabemos que hacer
bailar al público en el FIB no está re-
sultando difícil, pero hacerlo de mane-
ra tan cool es hasta ahora logro exclusi-
vo de Fujiya & Miyagi.
MEJOR MOMENTO: El principio y el
final: “Ankle Injuries” sigue siendo una
maravillosa carta de presentación con
todos sus ingredientes al servicio de
melodías adhesivas, y “Electro Karaoke”
una contundente despedida para vaciar
toda la energía que les pueda quedar.

Sometimes the image of a band says a quirky, awkward phrasing. Frenetic,

lot more about them, than their mu-
sic. In the case of this English trio (in-
creased to a foursome by the addition
of a drummer for a large part of the
set) it isn’t so much the persona of the
band, as the images that they project-
ed during the show. With an influx of
dots and squares like a pixel attack on
a low resolution telly from the 1970s,
images emerged, charged with colour
and movement incorporating human
figures and even nodding at the past
(Pacman!). Their music has a robotic
element to it, but also a human pulse:
like warm blood rhythmically circulat-
ing around the body, and sharp bursts
of electrical sound juxtaposed with
yet calculated, Fujiya & Miyagi join the
dots between repetitive pop: the spiral
sounds of Stereolab, all the way to the
krautrock of Can. Their sound is not
cold but warm and intense, sometimes
romantic and occasionally funky too.
Getting fibers to boogie down isn’t
all that tricky, but to do so in such a
disarming and charming manner can
only be done by a band like Fujiya &
Miyagi.
HIGHLIGHT: The beginning and
the end: “Ankle Injuries” is a brilliant
introduction to the band with its cute
and catchy melodies, and “Electro Ka-
raoke” is a convincing finale: a last
burst of energy, until all is spent.

Ya era hora de que viniese alguien
como él, un DJ como mandan los cáno-
nes, alguien que se hace respetar tanto
que viene vestido como para conocer a
su suegra. Nos referimos, obviamente, a
ese sombrero de copa tan burgués, tan
de influencia francesa que podrían lle-
varlo también grandes DJs como Vitalic
o Carretta. Y el tech house de Eeprom
fue a la vez minimal y animal, taladró
tímpanos y abrió cicatrices. Tan oscuro
era que gran cantidad de fibers baila-
ban fuera de la carpa, alejados de tanta
remezcla milimétrica. Concierto para
quienes se perdieron la noche de San

The time was a ripe for a guy like
Danton, a DJ who fits into the canon,
someone so able to earn your respect
that even his clothing is respectful, an
outfit befitting the first time you Meet
the Parents. I’m obviously talking about
that oh-so bourgeois top hat, so quin-
tessentially French that major DJs such
as Vitalic or Carretta could wear one too.
And Eeprom’s tech house was simulta-
neously minimal and animal, bursting
eardrums and opening old wounds. So
very dark that a lot of fibers were danc-
ing outside the tent, far away from this
seamless mixing machine. A gig for all
those in need of a dance.

ben de los beneficios del dance y el baile
a todo volumen para el organismo, y en
ello se aplican, para que luego no se diga.

Pista Pop is proving itself to be a per-
fect festival alternative to dieting or
spending hours sweating out in the
gym. In last night’s session (the sec-
ond edition of four in the Festival),
courtesy of Sir Lawrence and Dirwin-
zige, we witnessed all combinations
imaginable of electro; from techno
and dance, through to electro-dance
and house.
It seems that the Pista Pop DJs under-
stand the calorific benefits of turning
up the volume and getting people out
on the dance floor, burning off the
pounds gained through pastries, liq-
uid breakfasts and months of keep-
ing covered-up.

Limpio y Verde. Este año, el
Festival se ha propuesto echarle
una mano al planeta y dar ejemplo
poniendo en marcha el proyecto
Limpio y Verde, que además de
promover la creación, en los
próximos tres años, de un bosque
para compensar las emisiones
de CO2, impulsará el desarrollo
sostenible y la solidaridad a todos
los niveles. El planeta no sufre y
nosotros tampoco.
Porque un festival no sólo debe pare-
cer un paraíso sino que debe serlo, para
nosotros y el planeta que lo acoge, el
Festival Internacional de Benicàssim se
ha propuesto hacer las paces con su en-
torno poniendo en marcha el proyecto
Limpio y Verde que, entre otras cosas,
planea crear un bosque de especies au-
tóctonas para compensar las emisiones
de CO2 del festival. Así, el objetivo para
las ediciones de 2008, 2009 y 2010 es
plantar más de 2.000 árboles. Pero la cosa
no se queda ahí. Este año ya se ha utiliza-
do papel reciclado para toda la campaña
de publicidad exterior y para la infor-
mación al público durante el Festival (y
eso incluye la revista que estáis leyendo
en estos momentos); se han realizado di-
ferentes compras con un planteamiento
sostenible y se animará a los fibers a se-
parar la basura (vidrio, plástico y papel)
para facilitar la recogida y su posterior
eliminación. Pero no sólo se animará a
los fibers a hacerlo sino también a todos
los servicios del Festival y al propio equi-
po de producción. Por primera vez ade-
más podréis comprar vasos reutilizables

en el stand de Intermón Oxfam.
Respecto al intento de reducir las emi-
siones de CO2, como novedad este año,
se pondrá en marcha un servicio de al-
quiler de bicicletas y, como siempre, se
alentará a los fibers a compartir coche y,
para aquellos que vengan en avión, que
sepan que el festival les lleva del aero-
puerto de Valencia a Benicàssim. Asimis-
mo se facilitarán servicios de autobuses
para que el público del Festival pueda
moverse sin problemas entre el recinto,
las zonas de acampada, la playa y otros
puntos de interés del pueblo. A destacar
también el hecho de que FIB Heineken
cuenta con accesos para discapacitados.
Por primera vez también FIB Heineken
contará con economizadores de caudal
de agua en todas las instalaciones del
Festival (y eso incluye las duchas) y repar-
tirá entre los asistentes tapones (si no te-
néis los vuestros, podéis encontrarlos en
el stand FIBinfo) para protegernos de la
contaminación acústica.
Pero además de Limpio y Verde, FIB
Heineken también tiene muy en cuenta
su responsabilidad social, por lo que des-
de hace varios años desarrolla diferentes

Sólo basta con verla para saber que es

una mujer que está fuera de cualquier
parámetro. Personalidad, voz y presencia
son signos definitorios de una artista que
no necesita mayor aval que su nombre.
One look at Siouxsie and you know
that she’s a woman who transcends all
boundaries. Her personality, voice and
presence are the definitive marks of an
artist who needs no endorsement other
than her name.

Siouxsie sigue adelante, con ese herme-
tismo que le ha permitido pasar de mo-
dos y modas con elegancia y determina-
ción. “Mantaray” (2007) es el reflejo de la
mirada en solitario de una de las damas
más enigmáticas e influyentes del rock.
Su forma de observar y el tono de su voz
han marcado una trayectoria ligada a los
inolvidables Banshees, uno de los gru-
pos más importantes surgidos del punk
que dieron nuevos matices de expresión
a la música.
He aquí una parte de la charla que man-
tuvimos con ella a propósito de su nueva
andadura.
¿Ha sido duro encarar el proceso de tu
primer disco en solitario?
“Sí, ha sido como renacer, tanto perso-
nal como profesionalmente. Me siento
bien, todo esto es parte de mí y con eso

this is happening?
I think all artists should have
defining features. They should have

is that it’s harder nowadays to find real
glamour: there’s a lot of recycling, but

“Sí, se piensa en la música como un
negocio en crisis del que hay que sacar
el máximo de ganancias. Se desesperan
y quieren dinero como premio a su su-
puesta creatividad. Por eso ves a tantos
grupos que no dicen nada, que no son
nada. Su imagen es clónica, su discurso
es nulo, parece que han salido de una
escuela”.
¿Qué es lo último que te ha llamado la
atención?
“El disco de Portishead, aunque suelo
escuchar mucha música orquestal o de
películas antiguas”.
¿Crees que la música puede transfor-
mar la realidad en algo nuevo?
“En cierto sentido sí. La música es la
mejor manera de reflejar sentimientos,
más que la escritura o la pintura. Un
sentimiento plasmado en una canción
se convierte en una acción que al tocar
al oyente es pura magia”.

instincts and intuition. That’s why there
are so few magical songs.
Maybe it’s because information and
standards are so readily available these
days?
We live in an age in which virtual inter-
action is configuring new social ground
rules. This can cause both people and
art to be sterile. I like fantasy but I be-
lieve a connection with the people is a
basic requirement. However odd I may
seem, I know there are people out there
who relate to me. But interaction is es-
sential if anything is going to happen.
Lately it seems that the outlook for
music is utterly arid.
That’s right – music is thought of as
a crisis-hit business that needs to be
squeezed for the last penny. Exasper-
ated, people expect money as a reward
for their vaunted creativity. That’s why
you see so many bands that are nothing
and have nothing to say. Their image is
cloned, their discourse is vacuous, it’s
like they all graduated from the same
school.
What was the last album to catch your
imagination?
Portishead’s new album, although I
normally listen to orchestral music or
to old movie soundtracks.
Do you think music is capable of
transforming reality into something
new?
In a manner of speaking, yes it can.
Music is the best way to reflect feelings,
better than writing or painting. A feel-
ing captured in song turns into an ac-
tion, which becomes pure magic when
it touches the listener.

extraño, un atractivo singular.
Su indumentaria, su rostro y su manera
de cantar han calado hondo en gene-
raciones que, yendo desde el punk, el
gótico y las recientes camadas electro y
rock, le rinden pleitesía.
En los ochenta, gente como Nina
Hagen, Jarboe, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Lydia
Lunch o Anne Clark, destacaban por
su forma de asumir la música. Pero en
el caso de la gran Siouxsie Sioux, este
aspecto alcanzaba cotas míticas.
Siouxsie iba más allá de su aventura
con The Banshees, experimentando

Her influence is beyond question. Her
charisma, irrespective of any musical
ability, is a curious and singularly attrac-
tive quality. Her attire, face and singing
style have made a deep impression on
the next generations who, from punk,
to rock, to the new breeds of electro and
rock, have all paid her homage.
In the eighties, people like Nina Hagen,
Jarboe, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Lydia Lunch

spective on music. But in the case of the

Lo suyo nació en una habitación de ho-
tel. La melenuda Alison VV Mosshart
empuñaba una botella de tequila cuan-
do escuchó a Jamie (Hince) tocar en la
habitación de al lado. Por entonces, la
chica de las camisetas a rayas militaba
en Discount, una banda punk de Flo-
rida, y Hince en las británicas y ultra
subterráneas Scarfo y Blyth Power. Ali-
son dejó a un lado la botella, abrió la
puerta, tocó a la de Hince y se enamo-
ró. Primero de su guitarra, después de
sus musculosos riffs y luego de todo lo
demás. Se dieron teléfonos y quedaron
en que estaría bien montar algo, así que
una vez en casa, empezaron a grabar
cintas que metían en sobres acolcha-
dos y se enviaban envueltas en prome-
sas de dúos eléctrico-psicóticos. Y al
poco se gustaban tanto que decidieron
dejarlo todo y empezar de cero (hasta
se cambiaron el nombre, Alison pasó
a llamarse VV, y Jamie, Hotel). Con la
ayuda de una batería de mentira (digi-
tal), algunos discos de PJ Harvey y otros
de Royal Trux, nació la versión cruda,
sucia y esquizofónica de los hermanos
White (Meg y Jack): The Kills. Su gusto
por ambientes sórdidos y decadentes

Hince’s band was born in a hotel room.
Long-haired Alison VV Mosshart was
downing a bottle of tequila when she
heard Jamie (Hince) playing in the next
room. At that time, the girl with the
stripy t-shirts was already playing in
Discount, a punk band from Florida,
and Hince in the ultra-underground
British bands Scarfo and Blyth Power.
Alison put her bottle to one side, went
into the passage, knocked on Hince’s
door and promptly fell in love. First
she fell in love with his guitar, then
with his muscular riffs and then with
him. They exchanged numbers and
agreed that it would be good to start
something. Once they both got home,
they started to record tapes which they
put in padded envelopes and sent to
one another, fully wrapped-up in all the
promises of an electro-psychotic duo.
After a short time, they liked each other
so much they decided to drop every-
thing and start over (they even changed
their names Alison became known as
VV and Jamie, Hotel). With the help
of digital drumming and some of PJ
Harvey and Royal Trux’s tracks, the
crude, dirty, schizophonic version of
the White siblings, Meg and Jack, was
born: The Kills. Their liking for sordid

dida). Su primer largo, “Keep On Your
Mean Side”, disparo garagero grabado
en apenas dos semanas, apenas cruzó
fronteras. Con el segundo, “No Wow”,
conquistaron media Europa tirando de
nostalgia de la buena: refritos en calien-
te y en molón de los vampíricos The Je-
sus & Mary Chain, la Velvet y la primera
Polly Jean Harvey (apuesto a que “Rid
of Me” es uno de los discos que Alison
ha escuchado más de la cuenta). Su re-
cién horneado tercer largo, “Midnight
Boom”, ya bajo el influjo paparazzi de
la Moss, se abre a, por momentos, los
Fiery Furnaces y hasta prueba con es-
tribillos que podría haber afinado la
pixie Kim Deal. En directo, The Kills

after Pete’s ex (knowing the girl though,
it’s more probable that she went for the
jugular, given her taste in strange-look-
ing men). Their first album, Keep on
Your Mean Side , a garage revival rush
job recorded in less than 2 weeks, hard-
ly crossed boundaries. With the second
album No Wow , they conquered half
of Europe, drawing on good old nos-
talgia: rehashed but classy, spiced-up
versions of the vampire-like The Jesus
and Mary Chain, Velvet Underground
and Polly Jean Harvey (no surprise
since Rid of Me is one of the albums
Alison has listened to most). Their re-
cently released third album, Midnight
Along with the electric (and
Boom , already under the paparazzi sexual) tension that comes with the
influence brought by Moss, does reveal
elements of The Fiery Furnaces, and
anarco-punk duo -before sharing
even evidence of choruses that Pixie, the stage, Hince and VV shared
Kim Deal, could herself have penned.
On stage, The Kills sound and taste of
the same bed - this year you gotta
sex, madness, muscularity and punk throw in the morbid coincidence
sweat. And in this case they reek of un-

Dark clouds, smoke and thunder herald the fu-

ture, and this was also how the fashion show of
Agua Negra rolled into action on the Mustang
catwalk. Agua Negra’s designs hint at a not- Aguanegra
too-distant future, something that was born in
the imaginations of Philip K. Dick and in Rid-
ley Scott’s groundbreaking movie “Blade Run-
ner”. Agua Negra’s models appear genetically
engineered, clad in the style of Daryl Hannah’s
replicant.
Hardcore techno pounds the catwalk, then the
models emerged out of the darkness: the men
wore baggy, low-hanging jeans, sleek leather
pants, sunglasses and hoodies: an urban style
with a futuristic twist, their sweaters are pep-
pered with random, abstract splashes of col-
our, like the feverish brushstrokes of an ex-
pressionist painter in the throngs of creative
ecstasy. Both women and men wore war paint,
and their faces were stained black in the rep-
licant style.
The female models sported pointed shoulder
pads and sci-fi jackets, transparent gauze, and
stiletto heels (yes, ladies, the future is as hard Pinc
on our feet as the present). The cyberpunk eth-
ic predominates.

Ya no nos pueden tomar el pelo,
en pleno siglo XXI, con revivals y
gaitas. Pero no hay, precisamente,
gaitas en “Consolers of the Lonely”
ni en “Broken Boy Soldiers”, los dos
álbumes de estos cuatro señores
que, no teniendo bastante con sus
carreras en grupos o como solistas
(lo es Brendan Benson hace una do-
cena de años), se montan una a lo
Traveling Wilburys: Jack (mitad de
The White Stripes) y Jack y Patrick
(mitad de The Greenhornes), junto
el susodicho Brendan, se intersec-
cionan para escribir un nuevo ca-
pítulo, fresco y compacto, del rock
americano, con dedicación elogiosa
y resultados gigantescos. Rock de

sueco de origen argentino. Estos ya no
son los tiempos de Dylan y Baez, pero

de francotiradores del alma, aunque
podremos disfrutar de epígonos de
la guitarra y la voz como El Hijo, ca-
minando senderos más literarios, o
de adalides de la canción flageladora
como American Music Club, actuacio-
nes que van a hacer las delicias de los
fibers de corazón tierno. En el caso de
González, la solidez y las -cada vez más
hermosas- texturas de sus canciones
son valores propios. Así que, junto al
punchipunchi de la carpa de al lado, la
voz de Joselito, en su camastro árido de
guitarra y percusiones tropicales, nos
erizará toda la piel.

distorsión… Agarrando el tempo a
ratos y soltándose las melenas cuan-
do hace falta, el quid de estos “gó-
ticos sureños” está en su cantidad
apabullante de melodías, efectivas y
tramposas a la vez: ahí están “Broken
Boy Soldiers” o “Hold Up” para rivali-
zar con lo que venga a ofrecernos el
niño terrible de The Babyshambles.
Si cada cual por su cuenta no ha de
demostrar nada, la carrera de The
Raconteurs está hecha de gracia y
donosura, como la parte contratante
de la primera parte.
Bardo del norte o del sur
BARD OF THE NORTH AND THE SOUTH

With the 21st Century well-and-truly
through the door, the time when they
could fob us off with revivals and
drivel has passed. And it is precisely
drivel that is absent from “Consolers of
the Lonely” and “Broken Boy Soldiers”,
the two albums from those four men
who, not content to settle for their ca-
reers with their groups or as solo-art-
ists (as Brendan Benson has been for
the last dozen years), set up their own
supergroup à la Traveling Wilburys:
Jack (one half of the White Stripes)
and Jack and Patrick (one half of the
Greenhornes), along with the afore-
mentioned Brendan, come together to
write a new, fresh and compact chapter
in the history of American rock, with
laudable dedication and tremendous
results. 70’s-style rock, blues, Led-Zep-
pelinesque psychedelia, and country
are blended with punk in songs where
trumpets interplay with violins, wah-
wah effects and rich distortion. Hold-
ing the tempo at times, but loosening
their grip when necessary, the heart of
these “Southern goths” can be found
in their overwhelming store of melo-
dies, both effective and deceptive at the
same time: “Broken Boy Soldiers” or
“Hold Up” can rival the best that the
enfant terrible of The Babyshambles
has to offer. While each member taken
individually has nowt to prove, The
Raconteurs’ work is full of grace and
poise, like the party of the first part.
“It’s in our nature”, sings the Swede of
Argentinean birth. These are no long-
er the days of Dylan and Baez, but we
continue to be as moved as ever by the
careful strumming of an acoustic gui-
tar, by a voice so nasal that it grates, and
by thrusting, incisive lyrics. And the
words of this man -who has boosted
his credentials as a disciple of Leon-
ard Cohen by releasing two awesome
albums- are veritable goads, sung so
gently that you’d be hard pressed to be-
lieve that the singer has broken a plate
in his lifetime. “One day, your knees
will sink into the shit you’ve sown”; be-
ing a José fan has its masochistic side,
there’s no denying the fact. This edi-
tion of FIB is not crammed full artists
who tap into the recesses of the soul,
but we can nevertheless enjoy masters
of guitar and voice like El Hijo, who
walk more literary paths, as well as the
champions of self-flagellation that are
American Music Club -appearances
that will delight the more tender-
hearted of FIBers. In González’s case,
the solidity and increasingly beautiful
textures of his songs are values in their
own right. And so, along with the tech-
no blasting out of the adjacent tent,
the voice of Joselito, on its arid bunk
of guitar and tropical percussion, will
give us goosebumps all over.

the winner of an international competition
to come up with a design for the official
FIBERS AGAINST AIDS T-Shirt. Among
the hundreds of entries, the talented Raquel
Vila Díaz scooped top prize for her savvy
design that urged young people to “use your
head”. She was presented with two VIP FIB
tickets. All money raised will go directly to
the organisation DAA to continue the fight
against AIDS.

“DOG ALTOGETHER” A STORY OF
VIOLENCE AND SELF-DESTRUCTION.
Paddy Considine comes across as a re-
bel child who has not yet grown up. Be-
hind the leather jacket and the aviator
Ray-Bans there hides an actor taking his
first steps as a director. His debut “Dog
Altogether” which he presents today at
the IX FIB Heineken International Short
Film Festival run by Manuel Lechón, is a
story of violence, hatred and self-destruc-
tion. In his double guise of director and
screenwriter he has created an antihero,
the like of which he played many times
on the big screen.
“Dog Altogether” was born in a hotel room.
Considine was staying in San Sebastian
filming “Backwoods” alongside Gary Old-
man. Alone in his room, away from the ca-
mera lens, he started to write, and in just
2 hours he had finished the screenplay for
“Dog Altogether”, his first short film. He
showed the screenplay to the veteran Old-
man who was “so impressed it gave me the
push and the confidence to take it further”
he recounts. The antihero created in those
2 hours, Joseph, is a “tortured man, who
lives in a spiral of self-destruction”. He

seeks the light at the end of the tunnel but
can’t find it. It seems that this destructive
force wipes out all that matters to him in
his world. But this is set to change when,
as the director describes, “he meets beauty
in the face of a Christian woman who sees
in him a lost soul”.
Considine abridges this complex and in-
tricate tale (which is based in part on the
life of his father) in a short of 17 minutes.
His debut has already won awards at va-
rious cinema festivals in the UK.
He is still to be seen in front of the came-
ra, but Considine is enjoying life more be-
hind it: “When you direct you’re less expo-
sed. Your face isn’t in the foreground. You
end up exposing your soul”, he explained
yesterday, whilst seemingly oblivious to
the sound of Pete Doherty singing him-
self hoarse with Babyshambles, (even
though they share the same nationality,
Considine prefers another kind of mu-
sic: for example, he appeared in the video
for the Arctic Monkeys´ “Leave Before the
Lights Come On”).
There will be a sequel to “Dog Altogether”
called “Tyrannosaur” (still just a working
title) which he is already working on, a
film which contains the same characters
and the same locations. “It’s a love story
and treats the subjects of human faith
and behaviour”, adds this rebel child, as
he leaves to lose himself in the spiral of
music at FIB Heineken.

Paddy Considine parece un niño rebelde que
aún no ha crecido. Detrás de su chaqueta de
cuero y sus Rayban de aviador se esconde un
actor que da sus primeros pasos como direc-
tor. Su ópera prima “Dog Altogether”, que pre-
senta hoy en el IX Festival Internacional de
Cortos del FIB Heineken, que dirige Manuel
Lechón, es una historia de violencia, odio y
autodestrucción. En su faceta de director y
guionista ha creado a uno de los antihéroes
que tantas veces ha interpretado en la panta-
lla.
“Dog Altogether” nació en una habitación de
hotel. Considine se hospedaba en San Sebas-
tián para rodar la película “Backwoods”, junto
a Gary Oldman. En la soledad de su habita-
ción, lejos de los focos, empezó a escribir. Y
en sólo dos horas ya tuvo el guión de “Dog
Altogether”, su primer corto. Un guión que
enseñó al veterano Oldman y “le entusiasmó
tanto que me dio fuerzas y confianza para lle-
varlo adelante”, cuenta.
El antihéroe que creó en un par de horas, Jo-
seph, es “un hombre torturado, que vive en
una espiral de autodestrucción”, explica. Aun-

que busca la luz, no la encuentra. Parece que
cierta fuerza destructiva aniquile todo lo que
le importa a su alrededor. Pero eso cambiará
cuando “encuentre la belleza en la cara de una
mujer cristiana que trabaja en una tienda de
caridad”, señala el director. Antes de sucumbir
a sus ideas suicidas, un desesperado Joseph
encuentra el perdón en esa mujer cristiana,
que ve en él a un alma perdida.
Considine resume esta fábula compleja e in-
trincada (parcialmente basada en la vida de su
padre) en un corto de 17 minutos. Su ópera
prima ya ha sido premiada en diversos festi-
vales de cine del Reino Unido.
Aunque sigue dando la cara delante de la cá-
mara, Considine disfruta más detrás: “Al diri-
gir no estás tan expuesto. Tu cara no aparece
en un primer plano. Lo que acabas exponien-
do es tu alma”, explicaba ayer mientras Pete
Doherty se desgañitaba con sus Babysham-
bles, un concierto que le traía bastante sin
cuidado (porque aunque comparten naciona-
lidad, a Considine le va otra clase de música:
por ejemplo, apareció en el clip de los Arctic
Monkeys “Leave Before The Lights Come On”).
“Dog Altogether” tendrá secuela. De hecho,
el británico está inmerso en “Tyrannosaur”
(aunque el título es aún provisional), un fil-
me con los mismos personajes y las mismas
situaciones. “Es una historia de amor que
gira alrededor de la fe y del comportamiento
humano”, adelanta el niño rebelde, que estos
días anda perdido en la espiral de música del
FIB Heineken.

It’s not common knowledge, her name
is on none of the posters, but the Blonde
Ambition is the true star of this year’s FIB
Heineken. Madonna, who can go to whatev-
er festival takes her fancy, has given the rest
a miss and chosen to come to Benicàssim
for its added glamour. Today, the Mustang
tent will play host to the queen of pop in
what is Madonna’s only concert across the
whole of Spain. Don’t be shocked if she
looks a few kilos heavier, sports a beard, and
has more hair than Bigfoot. The actor Jorge
Calvo will step into the pop diva’s shoes
and, together with his company Micropun-
to Productions, offer a parody of the Confes-
sions on a dance floor tour. “She’s so thin and
fit, so obsessed with keeping in such good
shape… I could hardly be more different:
fat and hairy”, the actor acknowledges, be-
fore he struts his stuff in the queen of pop’s
skimpy outfits.
They’re pulling out all the stops for Ma-
donna’s trip through the transvestite mir-
ror: feathers, a nod to her more spectacular
performances, all of her hits and an ode to
lip-synching. If on her last tour, Madonna
took to the stage nailed to a giant cross five
times her size, Calvo will wear a tiny foam
rubber cross on his back. Since Madonna
goes all serious, philosophical and mega-
engagée when talking about certain subjects,
like the Palestinian conflict and religion,
Calvo will be no different. Our local Ma-
donna will be the standard bearer for the
Basque conflict, and will “descend from
the cross” to put our house in order, Calvo
reveals. Because Madonna is a match for
anything. That’s why she’s the undisputed
queen of pop… Dreamed up exclusively for
FIB Heineken, today’s performance will be
the first and only, a one-off opportunity to
see the artist as you’ve never seen her be-
fore.
The Companyia Incívica, meanwhile, will
be putting on another type of show, more
reminiscent of Cabaret, in the Plaza de
Constitución (Benicàssim). In their Cabaret
Incívico, we will observe how “power comes
between two Siamese sisters with contrast-
ing ideological stances”, explains Jordi
Sánchez, the company’s director. Trapeze,
dance and music will be used to symboli-
cally recount the sisters’ story. The drama
will be particularly resonant for those
amongst the audience who hail from Bar-
celona, as it employs a metaphor to criticise
the city’s Civil Statute.
Casi(n)Ladys return with their show Casi
Beni Ladys…casi. This plain and elegant
mise-en-scene featuring the dancers Paloma
Díaz and Mariví Hinojosa ends just the way
all celebrations should do: with two hipper-
than-hip girls slurping champagne out of
the highest of high-heeled shoes.

Nadie lo sabe, no se ha anunciado en los
carteles, pero la ambición rubia es la ver-
dadera estrella del FIB Heineken. Ella,
que puede ir al festival que se le antoje,
ha pasado del resto y ha venido a Beni-
càssim porque tiene más glamour. La
reina del pop actúa hoy en la carpa Mus-
tang en el Único concierto de Madonna
en España. No te sorprendas si le ves a
Madonna unos cuantos kilos de más (es
decir, muchísimos), barba y más pelos
que el BigFoot. El actor Jorge Calvo se
mete en la piel de la diva del pop y con
su compañía Micropunto Productions
parodia el tour Confessions on a dance
floor. “Ella es tan delgada y guapa, está
tan obsesionada por mantener su físi-
co perfecto… Yo soy todo lo contrario:
gordo y barbudo”, reconoce el actor, que
se embutirá en los modelitos que luce la
queen de la música pop.
No faltará de nada en el concierto de
esta Madonna travestida: plumas, remi-
niscencias a sus espectaculares esce-
nografías, todos sus hits y una oda al play
black. Si en su último tour Madonna
aparecía crucificada en una gigantesca
cruz cinco veces mayor que ella, Calvo
lucirá una pequeña cruz de gomaespuma
en la espalda.
Como Madonna se pone muy seria,
filosófica y súpercomprometida en cier-
tos temas como el conflicto palestino y
la religión, Calvo no será menos. Nuestra
Madonna patria será la abanderada del
conflicto vasco y “bajará de la cruz para
“Cabaret Incívic” arreglarlo”, adelanta Calvo. Porque Ma-
donna todo lo puede. Por algo es la reina
indiscutible del pop… Pensado exclu-
sivamente para el FIB Heineken, el de
hoy será el único pase de este concierto
que supone una primicia mundial en la
agenda de la artista.
Otro tipo de show, más cabaretero, será
el que ofrecerá la Companyia Incívica en
la Plaza de la Constitución de Benicàs-
sim. En su Cabaret Incívico veremos
“cómo el poder separa a dos hermanas
siamesas con dos posturas ideológicas
contrapuestas”, explica Jordi Sánchez, di-
rector de la compañía. Trapecio, danza y
música contarán desde un lenguaje sim-
bólico la historia de las dos hermanas.
Los barceloneses serán más sensibles a
su drama, ya que encierra una metáfora
para criticar la Ordenanza Cívica de Bar-
celona.
Casi(n)Ladys repetirá su show Casi Beni
Ladys…casi. La sobria y elegante puesta
en escena de las bailarinas Paloma Díaz
y Mariví Hinojosa acaba como deberían
terminar todas las celebraciones: con dos
chicas de lo más in bebiendo champagne
de sus altísimos zapatos de tacón.
