Hebrews 2:5-18

I. God has HUGE promises for humanity (2:5-8)

II. Jesus Became Human to Fulfill God’s Promise to Us (2:9-18)

A. Jesus is God’s intention for what it is to be human (2:9)

B. Jesus bridges the gap between humanity and Divinity (2:10-13)

I. God has HUGE promises for humanity (2:5-8)

A quote from Psalm 8- God is mindful of us. He made us “for a little while” lower
than angels. But He has crowned us with glory and honor.

God cares for humanity. We are the crowning achievement of His creation. We are
made in His image. We have intrinsic worth. We are eternal beings.

II. Jesus Became Human to Fulfill God’s Promise to Us (2:9-18)

A. Jesus is God’s intention for what it is to be human (2:9)

v8b Though God subjected everything under us. Not everything is under us.

Wild Animals. Mosquitoes. AIDS. Cancer. Death. Labor & Birth.

v9, Jesus fulfills this promise and gives this promise to all who come to Him

This idea that God made Himself lower than the angels (ie became human)
Is heresy to other religions
Is the distinguishing mark of Christianity
Is our only hope of receiving the Ps 8 promise

If you want to know how to live nobly – look at Jesus

B. Jesus bridges the gap between humanity and Divinity (2:10-13)

v10 Jesus is the bridge by which God brings many sons to glory
v10 Jesus authors our salvation
v11 Jesus, by sanctifying us, makes His Father our Father
v12 Jesus calls us His brothers (a quote from Ps 22) – His death (22:1) did this

C. Jesus stooped down to rescue humanity (2:14-16)

v14 Jesus wasn’t some visible spirit on earth, He was God made man
v14 Jesus’ death freed us from Satan – He rendered Satan powerless
v15 Jesus freed us from slavery to sin – compulsion and drive done

D. Jesus recues and redeems in order to reshape humanity (2:17-18)

v17 He is a merciful and faithful high priest for us

v18 He went thru all we go thru (4:15), so He comes to our aid when tempted
“comes to the aid” – He is present to help teach us resistance
